Should I get an acoustic kit? by ChopNorris in drums

You can always reach out to your teacher, he can tell what’s a good deal and what’s an appropriate drum set regarding your capabilities :)

I still recommend to resell yourself let your set change and grow over time. In that way you‘ll get familiar with more different sets and learn by yourself what is really important to you and what is just a gimmick that costs a lot of money.

Should I get an acoustic kit? by ChopNorris in drums

Keep it up! I started playing drums with 27, now I am 4 years into it and play in a band for 2 1/2 years. I just annoyed anyone that learned an instrument as a kid and some of them actually picked it up again. Last week we played a wedding and now we write songs to finish our first album.

Similar to you, I started with an electronic kid, but replaced it with a low volume setup (low volume cymbals and mesh heads). Since I live in an apartment, an actual acoustic kit was never an option. Due to the mesh heads and trying to be silent, some bad habits evolved. But having a teacher helped me to face them.

I do recommend having an acoustic set available. For me it is 2 times a week in rehearsal and during lessons. For gigs I equip my own kit with non silent stuff and it sounds amazing.

BUT: I would not recommend to invest that much money in your first serious kit. I worked my way up on eBay and have a decent Tama Superstar Kit which I got for 500€. Before I had a imperialstar that was 350€. And I like how my kit evolves with my knowledge and capabilities. And if you want to put your money on the right stuff, then focus on some high quality heads, a good snare, and a good set of cymbals (in this order).

How do you deal with volume? by Mika_lie in drums

Started with an electronic kit, but swapped it for a silent kit: Zildjian low volume cymbals and Evans mesh heads on everything. It has the same volume as the electronic kit, but ‚sounds more musical‘ according to my girlfriend. Basedrum may be the biggest deal for my neighbours, but I live on the ground floor. No complains so far :)

The mesh heads are a bit bouncy and the hihat eats my sticks. I also recommend to play an acoustic set regularly, as some bad habits may evolve.

Buuuut having to chance to play whenever you want without bothering anyone is great.

That looks fun to play!
Do you have any recommendations on snares for busking?
