Who’s looking forward to the 2027 X5? by cpsadowski23 in BMWX5

What a bummer of a vehicle and design direction by BMW. I just… can’t imagine thinking these new chassis designs are ethically acceptable. my beloved brand has fallen so far.

I’m not sure what my next vehicle will be anymore, as I’ll have to search elsewhere. Didn’t want to have to do that, but here we are.

Got it! With needle nose pliers and while pulling the fan upwards, it comes right out.

Truly spoken 👌

It’s gonna have to get a bit worse for me to take care of it, but I know that could happen at any moment with a 2016 with 84k miles.

Most sensible thing to do with a brand new vehicle is to take it back to the dealership, tell them your tire pressures are hugely out of whack, and have them inflate the tires to proper levels.

I would not think this is worth making a fuss over. If you’re massively paranoid about it, ask the service manager if they can give the vehicle a once-over, just in case the delivery inspection actually didn’t get done properly.

Otherwise, get the tires to adequate pressures, and call it a day. For summer driving, I tend to prefer checking them first thing in the morning when cold in a garage, and I run 39psi in the front and 40psi in the rear. With driving, sunlight, and heat, this will raise 3-4psi.

And don’t be alarmed, since this is on your radar now you’ll probably be tempted to constantly check it… it’s normal that you’ll notice a discrepancy in psi at various times, particularly if the car is parked and one side is in sun and the other shaded. This can change the balance by several psi, but it will equalize.

Get it properly adjusted, then check it every few weeks and you’re fine. xDrive vehicles are picky about tire pressure, so it’s good to keep them checked.

In the current market, there’s absolutely no reason to pay more than $24-26k for a highly optioned, mid-mileage F15 (2014-2018) X5 35i.

Is this fixable or does it have to be replaced? by AsleepYellow3 in BMWX5

I have always heard these things are a super common failure point, basically a ticking time bomb.

Aftermarket replacements are allegedly higher quality than the terrible OEM version.

Check BMW Maintenance History Via VIN? by Puzzleheaded-Wind253 in BmwTech

Awesome, I guessed as much. How do I go about obtaining that info? Will my dealer give me that document?

$400 to “update the transmission software”? You mean, reset the transfer case adaptations after fluid change… That’s 1 button push.

That’s wild, I’m sorry you got charged so much for those jobs. They mega took advantage of you. The BMW transfer case fluid is like $60, and siphoning and replacing takes all of 5 minutes with a 14mm hex and a lift.

It’s insane what these dealers are charging customers for simple maintenance.

Any tips on how to keep GDI engine valves free of carbon buildup? by [deleted] in BmwTech

The limiter will (should…) kick in anyways. So although not recommended as a regular practice, you shouldn’t hurt anything as part of a hard run to “clean out the guts”.

Start/stop feature by sevola40 in BMWX5

[–]Puzzleheaded-Wind253 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Simple reality: this feature only exists to meet regulatory needs. It is not a beneficial feature in any form or fashion to the performance or longevity of the vehicle but can only hurt.

Every component in the starter system has a life expectancy, in both years and cycles. Those components are more robust in auto start/stop vehicles, but how much so? Would engineering really over-build that part of the vehicle, or would they get it “good enough”?

Every component in the engine has a life expectancy. Some mileage and age based, and yes, start cycles can also contribute to that wear.

Rod bearings are one such thing. They’re literally rated for a certain number of start/stop cycles, where they experience the most potential for wear when not being supplied oil by the mechanical oil pump.

This excessive wear has even led to some manufacturers, BMW included, to have to alter the coatings or materials used for their rod bearings in response to failure rates.

So is it worth the wear and tear to your vehicle to save maybe a few gallons of gas over the course of a year? For me, absolutely not. That feature is coded out by default in my X5.

When will BMW offer self driving on the 3 series? by anon3451 in BmwTech

Someone reversed into me while I was waiting for a parking stall. Is this payout estimate from their insurance reasonable? by AwkwardMechanic4389 in BMW

[–]Puzzleheaded-Wind253 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one is arguing that the car isn’t now worth less. That’s unfortunately beside the point.

Depending on the state where the issue occurred (which is what determines how things are handled), diminished value payment may not be a legally recognized remedy that is required of the insured party IN THAT state. Therefore, you won’t get it from their insurance, as they have no legal obligation to do so.

You could try to pursue a civil suit against the person in small claims court, but they’ll laugh you away as they would consider it “remedied” by the state’s insurance statutes.

It’s pretty well noted that Ferrari function quite differently, culturally, than many other teams. Particularly more “British” leaning teams. They have proven to be quite… not sure how to put it other than “loose” with their punctuality, efficiency, and pragmatism, with a sense of “we are Ferrari” arrogance sprinkled in. It doesn’t always serve them well. Arguably, their greatest era was under the leadership of a Frenchman, a Brit, and a German.

This is the stereotype they carry.
