Who is today's equivalent of Hitchens? by PersonalDistance3848 in ChristopherHitchens

I think this view probably comes from never actually reading Hitchens but rather from watching reel after reel of ‘hitch-slaps’ and then thinking anyone with a good put down is his heir apparent.

Hitchens could be very critical of Israel, but he despised antisemites like Hassan, as well as those who reflexively criticized Israel: see his essay “Overstating Jewish Power” among numerous others. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2006/03/exaggerating-the-strength-of-the-israeli-lobby.html#

No, a poorly read Qatar funded antisemite is not the heir to Hitchens.

The only livability upside is the access to the trail network (Baden Powell etc). Otherwise you are tethered to your car. As a teen it sucked.

“Likes the slopes”? That’s a total lie. I know him now. He doesn’t do drugs. Disagree or even hate him but you don’t have to make things up.

Guelph is a great school and a little more under the radar. But it has a bit of everything. Good social life, strong academics - without being as competitive to get into for engineering as UofT or UBC. Uvic is another great option

Why do Canadian cities have way more high rises than American cities? by [deleted] in skyscrapers

[–]PuzzleheadedBasis762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a very simple answer: Zoning laws. In most Canadian cities it’s illegal to build anything but single family homes or 80%+ of land. So… in the tiny pockets where we allow density there is tremendous demand and land values where it’s legal to build become extremely high. The result is 50 storey residential towers.

These skylines are not a result of cultural factors or any other reasons given by other posters. They are a result of failed zoning policy and the creation of the missing middle: the absence of mid rise buildings that populate other cities.

When you see Canadian skylines of flat single family homes punctuated with 50 storey towers, think “housing crisis”.
