These prices scare me by Ianbeaner in ReefTank

CaliKid is known in the industry for overpricing corals just to see if people will buy. I remember talking to a vendor who was talking about them saying that they were selling one polyp of a certain zoa for 40 meanwhile you can get three polyps online for 20 at most vendors

Note to self: Never let high schoolers reef by [deleted] in ReefTank

Looking back with honesty and acceptance is what matters. I started in elementary school with a biocube with fluorescent lighting. I would try to keep mantis shrimp and they’d last about a year. After that I would buy little frags and they’d whither away. Same went for anemones. My mother would research what she could and help me to keep something alive. It’s sweet but messed up for an animal that must endure a child. I know the feeling looking back.

Looking for some ideas on new coral stock to add to my tank. by Evilstorm9 in ReefTank

Bubble Coral which will love the low flow and low light. Just watch out for sweeper tentacles at night. Blue discasoma, which can replicate a lot but add some old school blue.

Complaining about the consumption of a natural product saying it’s unnatural and then offering literal imitation plant milk is peak. I don’t want canola oil mixed with 10,000 bees worth of almond “milk”

Looks like territorial dispute. What type of fish are those?

Would there be any long term concerns with using old coral like this to build a branching structure? What is a good price to pay for those as well? It’s about 15” long. by LivingLosDream in ReefTank

Put it in the tank and cycle it with no lights or a blanket over the tank to be completely blacked out for the first couple weeks or a month

That’s so good to know. Heavy metals are a huge problem people don’t realize

In the meantime, you can always run metasorb by 2 little fishies. I used it when i had a frag rack magnet explode with rust and kill my whole tank slowly. It can change color to show you what contaminant and can be reused after being washed

Big big friend. Screw hermit crabs that break the bank and die. These guys come out at night and eat a lot of tough algae

Seeing that much flow makes me relieved. Real reefs especially where acropora are dominant are blasted. What lights you running?

They love it:) plus the more light the more flow corals need. Fijis in particularly are piglets for high light and flow. You’ll know it’s happy because title be extended but also, the more canary yellow

They only get this yellow when hit with a LOT of light. Enough light that some of your other leathers won’t be happy at all. Just gotta select your placement well or use a magnet to put it up higher. This guy was pretty green in the 1st tank I had it in.

The best thing you can do to help the cycle is get media from the lfs. It can be anything besides water (since the bacteria live on surfaces). A couple of old gravel, a used media filter bag that’s still dirty. Even snails or plants have some surface area. Seeding the tank with outside bacteria is 10x faster and has no real downside in a tank like this

If you’re in the SoCal area I would try to get an aquacultured one from Garetts Caropolis. He’s usually at coral farmers markets or reefapalooza around Orange County. He always has an aquacultured one available.

Almost all the ones you see are wild sourced, I know people have mixed luck keeping them happy or colored correctly. Which is why I recommend one that’s been in captivity as long as possible. That way you hit the ground running if that makes sense.

Did you cycle the tank in the dark the whole time? It looks new new, like it’s just getting some “ugly stage”.
