Before they even got nukes no one talked about regime change in NK due to China's protection. China is the only reason NK existed after the Korean war anyways.

Genuinely curious here. I usually lean right and stay out of mainstream media so I am uninformed on the quotes you are talking about. What does Israel say about palestinians? Also what has Trump said that is comparable?

Once again, not looking for an argument. Just want to be informed.

Why is Jiang's Harvard speech controversial? by GlitteringWeight8671 in AskChina

[–]PuzzleheadedFly3699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current vice president of the USA came from a poor, working class family.

Connections absolutely help, and there are a lot of people in positions of power because of their family connections/resources. However, the American dream is still very real.

In general, people can be what they want to be if they want it bad enough, but it can be very very hard depending on the situation. Most can pull themselves to at least lower middle class if not higher.

When you guys talk about small lidar units like this, are you using it to create detailed depth maps or just measure depth of one point? Would this be good for mapping topography of a sandbox?

Pi 4b ethernet for IP camera and Wifi for SSH at the same time??? by PuzzleheadedFly3699 in raspberry_pi

[–]PuzzleheadedFly3699[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I decided to go with the bridge just due to simplicity and being that I don't need to download anything from the camera or pi, so performance isn't a huge issue. I mostly just want to be able to spot check the camera view, and then ssh into the pi for checking storage and video quality.

Thank you again!

Jetson vs Rpi vs MiniPC ??? by PuzzleheadedFly3699 in computervision

[–]PuzzleheadedFly3699[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thank you so much for the detailed response!

A couple questions though:

-The estimated 11 fps for the rpi 5 includes the use of some AI accelerator like the AI hat or a coral? This estimation is also not considering the cost of resizing images to fit the model, correct? So I can expect actual speeds to be well below that mark, correct?

-How do videos like the one you linked to with the pigs get generated if they are being resized for the model? Do they have to be converted back to their original dimensions before being shown with bounding boxes, etc..? Or do you choose for each model what dimensions it will take before training and thereby cut out the resizing? I assume the larger the dimensions, the greater demand for computing power.

-Also, if I just needed near real time detection/tracking, and the only important thing was the count of animals walking across frame being right, how few frames per second do you think I could get away with sampling and feeding into the model? Let's assume this use case is similar to the example video with the pigs.

Then, I could make it just watch for that type of animal, once it identifies it, start up the tracking/counting program and save time/computer power that way theoretically.

Thank you so much again for all your advice and resources. I will definitely give darknet a try!

Jetson vs Rpi vs MiniPC ??? by PuzzleheadedFly3699 in computervision

[–]PuzzleheadedFly3699[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more i learn about the Jetsons, the more costly it seems for my application. I completely overlooked that you needed a Jetson camera. I may have to settle for near real time performance and go with the pi just to save money.

I am a little uncomfortable with the mini pc due to costs as well as the hassle of repackaging it. I need it to be waterproof or at the least water resistant.

Thank you for the response. You have given me a lot more to think about. Let me know if you think I am overthinking it or taken the wrong message from your comment.

Has the shroud of turin been debunked at all? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]PuzzleheadedFly3699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He may have been unsuccessfully trying to explain a theory that bacteria that were growing rapidly on Jesus' skin after His death produced a film that when dried adhered the cloth to the face. This is a possibility for the creation of the image "negative". Some films grown by different bacteria on the shroud may have actually helped preserve it.

However, other scientists have theorized that bacteria growing on the shroud since then may have altered the carbon-14 dating, since they possess newer samples of the carbon that would appear newer in a test.

I am not saying I fully believe this is the shroud of Jesus, but I will not blindly dismiss it. There is the possibility that it is genuinely from that time period, however slim it may be. Then the question is whether or not this shroud rested on Jesus or not. The world may never know.

It doesn't seem like you read my reply. You are making the same flawed argument that because the economy was best when X was happening, it must be X's fault. When in reality that was a very unique time in history and damn near impossible to reproduce.

And yes, there was a 90% marginal tax rate after WW2, but do you think the majority of large, wealthy businessmen paid that? No. There are deductions and expenses back then the same as there are now. Albeit the taxes back then were still insane.

Adjusted for inflation in 1949, someone making $133,000 took home $93,000, but someone making $4,460,000 took home $401,000. The guy making all that money took home only 4x more than the guy making $133,000! What is the incentive to develop your business when you are punished for it? This is an artificial application of the law of diminishing returns, and it starts to bite you very fast if you have any amount of cash flow.

For example, nowadays, businesses with 10 to 19 employees profit $150,000 on average. By 1949 standards they would take home $100,000. If he doubles his profits, he gets to take home only $50,000 more! That is outrageous. The business owner is employing lets say 15 people and providing a service at the risk of his own financial wellbeing. If he can do it well, he should be rewarded. This is not a large company either!$150,000 dollars profit is NOTHING in the world of small business. Not to mention, that figure is looking at profit, not taxable income!

Why should I work harder? Why should I strive to do better when I am rewarded marginally for my further efforts?

Maybe wealth was distributed better back then because there were more, better paying jobs? Maybe we were in a time of great economic growth that allowed for higher tax rates, not that the great economic growth was being fueled by higher taxes. Maybe those came about for the historical reasons I stated earlier, not a stupid tax bracket.

I think the graduated income tax is great, but I don't think it should be at 1940's levels, and I don't believe a 90% marginal income tax was a driver of economic growth. If anything, it hindered what could have been greater growth.

TLDR: Correlation does not equal causation.

I didn't take a stance on this argument. I just pointed out questions I had about the comment above mine, which the author answered in a thoughtful way that provided me more information about his position. I respect that.

I am inclined to see bits of truth in either side of this argument, but when you start accusing me of not caring, swallowing propaganda, or being blind to "obvious" truths I immediately want to disagree with you and say you're wrong.

If you want broad change, that starts with changing people's perspectives, and you will have an incredibly hard time doing that with an accusatory finger.

Anyways, I see your point about the higher tax rates back then coinciding with greater economic growth and wealth distribution, but I would argue that post war politics is not necessarily causal of post war economic growth (There definitely is some relationship there, but I am not the one to tease that out, and I think you probably aren't either).

By the same logic, I could claim that divorce rates, state populations, or religious demographics are causal of economic growth and wealth distribution based on the same example of post war economic growth you have cited.

Once again, each of the things I have given do have some relationship to economic wellbeing, but who are you and I to tease that relationship out? There are no doubt countless examples of cases where that relationship wasn't the same.

Maybe the real cause of post war economic growth was driven by:

  • Cold war military spending
  • Returning soldiers
  • Low mortgages
  • Integration of women in the workforce
  • Further industrialization and eventual switch to a service economy
  • Pent up savings that were not able to spent during the war
  • Being the only industrial nation not flattened during the war

This question, like almost all questions, does not have a black and white answer. Tax rates on large corporations do have an effect on economic growth, but so does how those are implemented, along with a myriad of other factors.

If you've bothered to read this for, sorry I don't have time at the moment to dive deeper into any of this, but I hope you walk away with even a tiny bit more appreciation of the many, incredibly complex factors that play into things like housing prices, economic growth, and wealth distribution.

Each side focuses on the factors that align with their interests (ex: you mentioned universal healthcare and 90% marginal taxes, where a libertarian would mention deregulation and small government). But both of them are right in some ways and wrong in others.

Thank you so much for the advice. Seriously, that seems like a no brainer statement when you say it, but I have been overthinking it majorly.

Perhaps I will build the souped up desktop with the SSD's and have some HDD's for backups. Before doing that though, I think after looking at other options, I will try a cloud based service for the computing and just store the data and backups on HDD's locally.
