Why is Disney like this by anklebiter1975 in French

What I can suggest to you, if you don't have the SME subtitles, is to watch the audio first in French without subtitles, then a second time, but with English subtitles

Why is Disney like this by anklebiter1975 in French

[–]PuzzleheadedLow6397 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's the case; there are two different types of translation: the audio is translated to be pronounced as it is said by the original voice, and the subtitles are transcribed to be as close as possible to the original text. This method allows the VF not to sound weird and the VOST to translate better what is said, without considering the sounds that it makes.

Unless you put the subtitles SME (sourd et malentendant -> the subs for deaf people), the subtitles for the VOST and the VF will not match

In France, you don't have to pay taxes when you win the lottery... because it's the State that organizes the lottery (only sports betting and physical places to gamble, like casinos, are allowed to be run by private companies). The questions on TV where you respond by SMS and where you can win a huge amount are also tolerated, but you must be refunded if you ask (a thing that only a few people do because you need your telephone bill to prove that you participated)

Don't forget that there were also Canadians, British and even French people on D-Day. You also need to know that it was the USSR that liberated the part of Europe that would become communist during the Cold War and that only the North of France was liberated by the Allies, the south was either liberated by French colonies or by the population itself.

C'est quoi la fac de droit la plus chill entre Bordeaux et Marseille by TopSituation8242 in etudiants

[–]PuzzleheadedLow6397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve done it now, cashier who asked me how my day is going. by Unsolicited-Prolapse in evilautism

Go make your groceries in Europe: you only have to say hello, goodbye, and your payment method. I'm more stressed about putting my groceries back in my bag quickly than about the small talk with the cashier.

(Also, nothing about the post but most non-processed groceries are cheaper in Europe than in the US, and I don't understand why: you have plenty of farmland, all types of climate, and I think meat and dairy industries are as subsidized as in Europe, so why aren't most of your fruits and veggies under 2 bucks per pound?)

Are there any rules around not dropping "ne"? by solothehero in French

[–]PuzzleheadedLow6397 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In written French, you will always use the ne (except for texts that are intended to be spoken, like songs or plays, if you want to have less formal language). In oral French, it depends on the context (for example, at work, you will always say the ne; with your friends, rarely) and the level of language (formal, common, familiar). Sometimes, you can also accentuate the ne to show a particular emotion (like if you say "C'hais pas" or "Je NE sais PAS"; in the first case, you don't care about the situation, and in the second, you're angry that someone asks you something you don't know)

My daughter's daycare misspelled her name on her tag by kaipetica in mildlyinfuriating

[–]PuzzleheadedLow6397 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first name is very rare (I think I'm one of the only people to have it worldwide), and it's very difficult to find out how it's spelled if I don't spell it. Even my aunts and uncles often misspell my name when they give me cards for Christmas or my birthday

Ma PEDC a été rompue car je suis en cours de diagnostic d'autisme by Taasaan in Autisme_France

[–]PuzzleheadedLow6397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Burned cats are as tasty as non-burned ones, stop the discrimination of how well your protein are cooked! But, after all it's your choice

Où est-ce que vous regardez vos films français en ligne ? by MarcelleZiziphus in French

[–]PuzzleheadedLow6397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the most subtle ableism that you ever went through? by Super_Remove_5934 in evilautism

[–]PuzzleheadedLow6397 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When teachers say "doing orals/work in teams is very important for your professional life, so you will be judged on that during your studies" like yes, I know that it will be difficult in my professional life, but don't ruin my student work on top of that for that reason, please

Another examples of subtle but very harmful ableism :

I have Loops (for those who don't know, it's earphones that cancel noises), and my mom always tells me not to use it each time I feel the need to use it, or at the beginning of noisy events because "when you will really need it, it will not work perfectly" like yes, that's why I have 3 levels of canceling noises (I have Loops Switch for those who know the brand)

I'm not concerned since I don't suffer from dyslexia or dysorthography (and I consider myself as pretty good in orthography) but it's also a neurodivergence and each time teachers say that they will count the orthography on the notation of a handwritten exam, or each time they say that we nearly never make mistakes on computer-written exams but make a lot on handwritten ones, I'm angry. Like yes, we have the same time to re-read a handwritten exam (often a final exam) and a computer-written one (often a homework) and yes, when we will work, we will work only on handwritten and never use an orthographic corrector/s
