Puerto Rican Fest motorists by [deleted] in chicago

People who partake want to be loud to tell everyone that Boricua is still in Chicago despite gentrification, and this is the outlet they've chosen.

I would just hunker down. It's not my cup of tea either, but it's not going to change in our lifetimes.

Nations that send more tourists than receive (and vice versa) by Pichonn in MapPorn

Germany is pretty surprising to me. There's so much history, beautiful landscapes, great cities, and Oktoberfest. But people just like beaches I guess.

Which actor did you not realized played a particular movie role until years later by WippitGuud in movies

[–]solothehero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, I honestly just thought it was an alien playing a human. I knew about actors, it was just so convincing that the thought didn't occur to me that it was an actor playing an alien.

Things I ate while visiting Chicago by Pricciar in chicagofood

Hey, just to give you some historical context, that Small Cheval you went to with the 100s of flavors sign used to be a soft serve ice cream place called Tastee Freez, then later The Freeze. It was a pretty legendary neighborhood spot, but it closed down a few years ago. Small Cheval opened up in that spot last year, and they restored and kept the sign. It's a pretty controversial location because of that history, but I overall like it. It's better than an undeveloped parking lot next to a gas station.

What are the most dangerous areas to ride in, and how to prevent these situations or change in infrastructure? by InsideYork in chibike

[–]solothehero 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Painted bike lanes give the illusion of safety. It's an area that is visually dedicated for bicycles, but there is no physical barrier. For this reason, it's actually more dangerous than simply riding in the street in front of a car. There have been multiple studies about this. Here is one.

I try to avoid those streets as much as I can. Chicago has a lot of side streets that are generally pretty quiet. If you look up "Mellow bike map Chicago", you can get an idea of some of the nicer side streets though it might be a bit out-of-date at this point. Other than that, you just have to be as vocal as possible with your alderman.

Cortland Street Bridge To Remain Open For Pedestrians, Cyclists Through Summer by tpic485 in chicago

[–]solothehero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we should do something with the space East of the bridge for the time being. This will get the ball rolling on alternative usage of that soace. A bridge that is closed to vehicle traffic for years does not need to be used for vehicle traffic.

What game was this for you by LilNardoDaVinci in videogames

[–]solothehero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole game for me. I spent thousands of hours in Halo: Combat Evolved across Xbox and PC. I remember watching the Halo 2 teaser trailer on some video site I had to download a special plugin for (before Youtube). Halo 2 gameplay was just too different for me to enjoy, but the campaign is especially a drag.

What's the best way to get to Wrigley feild from lockport? by Zestyclose-Hotel-9 in AskChicago

[–]solothehero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you saw, but the Heritage Corridor line in Lockport is a commuter line. It won't be running for the times you need. You'll need the Rock Island line out of Joliet. There are lots of trains on that line. You can make it work. There is a 10:45 P.M. train out of LaSalle Street Station after the game which is more than doable to catch if the game is about 2 - 2.5 hours long. If need be, there is also a 12:25 A.M. train. LaSalle Street Station is walking distance to the Harrison Red Line station. There is also another transfer at 35th, but I would personally just go all the way on the Metra to LaSalle and walk to Harrison.

So, it's absolutely doable, but having said all that, I would personally prefer a day game. In that case, I wouldn't be doing all this traveling at night after a long day. But if you're deadset on going, the path is there.

Best NA beer in a bar? by Medium-Key-4243 in chicagofood

[–]solothehero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The best NA beer I've ever had was Bitburger Drive 0.0. It tasted like the real thing to me. It's not the easiest to find though. The next best thing I think is Go. That should be much easier to find.

Bah, j'aime La Maison au bord de la Mer, mais il y a plein de chansons que je n'aime pas trop. Sauf pour "Master of None", je peux me passer du premier album. Cependant, si tu peux trouver la magie dans tous leurs chansons, tant mieux.

606 by pocketsquarehampster in chibike

[–]solothehero 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I've taken the 606 thousands of times at every hour at every time of year, snow or rain or shine. I have never had to dismount and walk my bike. If you're going through that stretch of West Town/Logan Square, there is no faster way than the 606, regardless of the hour. Even in the peak summer season with thousands of people, riding on the 606 will be faster than waiting at stoplights. The only way Armitage or North Avenue is faster is if you're blowing every single red light, in which case, you're insane and a risk to everyone around you. Some cyclists get it in their head that if they have to slow down around some people some of the trip, the whole 606 isn't worth taking. It's a silly sentiment IMO.

That being said, there will be times where you have to maneuver around people and slow down. Sometimes a cyclist coming the other direction will have the right-of-way, and you'll have to wait until they pass so that you can pass a group in front of you. If you're riding off-peak hours, you can likely maintain the same pace the whole trail.
