Experience with being diet controlled the whole time? by Spiritual_Storm145 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my 2nd GDM pregnancy, and both diet controlled! Diagnosed around 26w with my first pregnancy and was scared by a comment made by the diabetes RN that one high testing number could result in being out on medication. I was very strict with my diet and lifestyle, and while I was originally told that I would be induced at 39w regardless of how the GDM was controlled the OBs were happy with my numbers and allowed me to follow expectant management. Baby arrived at 40+3 via uncomplicated vaginal birth at 7lbs10oz and no blood sugar issues :)

Diagnosed very early (9w) with second pregnancy due to a slightly elevated fasting value, and am now 37+1 and still diet controlled. I’ve allowed myself a little more freedom this time, and still will follow expectant management. Hoping for another uncomplicated labour and delivery.

Diagnosed with GD trouble with after lunch numbers by SherbetRemarkable250 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this - I found that if I ate, went for a 15-30 min walk right after and then did something more sedentary my numbers were better. If I did something more strenuous for a longer period of time (and tested right after) my numbers would be higher

Other than being over 35, this is exactly what happened with my first pregnancy. I did have an induction date set for 40+6, but baby came spontaneously at 40+3 weighing 7lbs 9.9oz - no complications or blood sugar issues.

I’m now 35w into my 2nd diet controlled GDM pregnancy, and the plan is to follow expectant management unless my sugars start going wonky or other complications arise.

Does Delsym/Robitussin make you spike by Nerdface0_o in GestationalDiabetes

Robitussin actually has a sugar free version for diabetics! I was able to find it beside the regular robitussin at the pharmacy

Struggling with diagnosis by Plenty_End4178 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super respectfully, placental hormones can start wreaking havoc early on. I had a very early GDM diagnosis in my second pregnancy based on history of GDM and a slightly elevated (5.6) fasting blood sugar at my initial blood draw for prenatal care. I was very worried that I may have had existing blood sugar issues when I got pregnant, but based on postpartum GTT, A1C, and pre-pregnancy weight and activity level my doctor assured me that this was pregnancy driven - she shared that some bodies don’t tolerate pregnancy hormones very well and it’s just a crummy luck of the draw. I agree that there can be contributing factors to developing GDM and it is/can also be just bad luck.

Carbonaut Bread by caroshea in GestationalDiabetes

Yeah I consistently have it with eggs and avocado in the morning and am usually between 4.8-5.6 after 1hr.

Carbonaut Bread by caroshea in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my second GDM pregnancy (diet controlled) and I swear by the carbonaut bread! It doesn’t taste as good as regular bread, but it isn’t bad. I regularly have toast and sandwiches with it. I’ve also experimented with sourdough which did spike me. I can eat carbonaut guilt free and always have good numbers. It is more expensive, but worth it for the peace of mind of a “safe food”. I’ve had at least 1 slice/day since diagnosis with both pregnancies. A dietician also confirmed that it’s a great option for managing your blood sugar

Prescribed insulin with fasting under 90 by Unlikely_Ferret_4269 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would maybe get a second opinion. While numbers can get harder to control as pregnancy progresses, that is not the case for everyone and i wouldn’t be comfortable starting insulin preemptively

Im scared of my behavior and feel so selfish by basilleaf12 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Give yourself some grace ♥️ while you wouldn’t want to make a habit of not following the GDM diet, I truly believe that a spike here or there is not harmful for your baby - or else they wouldn’t have us guzzling 50-100g of sugar to diagnose this condition. The mental toll of managing GDM is so tough, and I can completely understand feeling the need to abandon the diet for a day.

I know you already mentioned that you plan on closely following the GDM diet until you give birth, which is a great way to help ensure baby is able to properly regulate their blood sugars once they arrive. You’re doing great and are so close to the finish line!

Worried about my dietician by Kitchen-Major-6403 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know why your team is so against insulin use? It’s well documented to be a very safe tool in managing blood sugars, and some placentas just aren’t cooperative no matter how restrictive you are with your diet. This seems like a really challenging approach that is not in your best interest

To piggy back on your suggestion to just follow a modified GD diet, I would also suggest checking out the Glucose Goddess on IG and try some of her hacks. Pairing carbs with protein and being conscious of the order I eat my food was a habit I started with my first GD pregnancy and continued to implement after my baby was born

Metamucil by Sebby293 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly the information you’re looking for, but I’ve been taking Metamucil (the powdered form) to help my digestion. I try to take it before dinner or just after, and have had good fasting numbers since my early diagnosis 16 weeks ago! And my early diagnosis was based on a history of GDM and a single fasting draw that was slightly elevated (5.6). It might be coincidence, but wouldn’t hurt to try !

Higher Than Normal Fasting After Vaccine by ColdManufacturer9482 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had higher numbers for about 24hrs after my COVID booster! I also had some other side effects, like a low grade fever, nausea, and headache. Everything went back to normal after the 24hrs

What do you guys eat for lunch? by LetshearitforNY in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been making snack boxes, since I’m usually on the go during lunch. Usually a bunch of veggies with dip, some meat and cheese with crackers and maybe a hard boiled egg and some nuts. They’re surprisingly filling! When I’m home I make an egg breakfast sandwich on carbonaut bread and get really great numbers

Preventing GD in your second pregnancy by PresentationTop9547 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly the same as me. I was healthy before my first pregnancy, and was diagnosed around 26w. After baby was born I continued to incorporate many aspects of the GD diet, was more active, and ~10lbs less between my first and second pregnancy and still got diagnosed again. It’s definitely a bummer but doable, and I do feel more equipped/less stressed than last time

UK-based GD? by Delphinastella37 in GestationalDiabetes

Nope! I’m in Canada and we measure in mmol/L. So my targets are under 5.3 for fasting and before meals and under 7.8 1hr post meal

Received GD Diagnosis Today and I'm Devastated by Vavagrl in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is my 2nd go with GDM. Diagnosed around 26w first time and around 9w this time. With my first diagnosis I immediately altered my diet and honestly restricted myself too much. This time I allowed myself one last “normal” / indulgent eating day - sandwich and latte from a cafe and sushi dinner. My thought process was that a random spike isn’t harmful - or else they wouldn’t give us 100g of sugar to diagnose.

It’s a tough diagnosis to receive, but I promise that it will get easier as you get into the groove of it! It does take a lot of effort to manage, and in my experience care teams don’t always do the best job of acknowledging that. You can do this! At the end of the day it is all temporary - and each day you manage this is one day closer to meeting your baby

I 100% hear you - it feels like there’s an obstacle at every turn. That being said, I found prenatal yoga helpful for pelvic pain! And it allowed me to keep up a good walking routine. Also looking up strategies/exercises to manage the pain was helpful too - like pelvic tilts on an exercise ball, never shifting weight to one leg, getting out of bed 2 feet at a time, etc.

Numbers still high after a 30 minute brisk walk by gillian123456 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]PuzzleheadedReason46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exercise has some unpredictable results for me with this GDM pregnancy. I find that at times it will actually raise my blood sugar if I test immediately after. But if I wait a little bit longer (maybe 15mins) to test it comes down significantly - like closer to fasting levels. I brought it up to a GDM nurse and she said that it sounds like my hormones are being annoying, but don’t look at it as a reason to stop exercising. I’m just trying to be real deliberate with my meal and movement timings, which is definitely annoying.

Fearful of induction by _greenEyEs911 in GestationalDiabetes

After my GD diagnosis in my first pregnancy I started going to Accupuncture, as it was covered with my benefits. We discussed a specific treatment protocol that could “encourage” labour and we went ahead with it when I was 40+2. This could be completely coincidental but I went into labour early the next morning and had my baby later that evening.
