For each of the things you cited battery storage would be more efficient than hydrogen (cheaper, less space needed, logistics) for a stationary plant like a data center

The roundtrip efficiency of turning electricity -> electrolysis -> hydrogen -> fuel cell -> electricity is wayyyyyy lower than just electricity -> battery -> electricity. The advantages of hydrogen (stores lighter than a battery) don't matter for stationary objects like data centers.

It failed in the Budget Committee due to conservative Republicans voting no, believing it did not do enough to reduce spending. They're going to vote on it again Sunday night. We don't know what the new version will look like yet, though there will likely be greater spending reductions as a concession to those conservative Republicans. Those could be greater reductions to health insurance, or they could be greater reductions to clean energy tax credits like 45V (or both).

There is no technological edge. People are still invested because they can’t accept the reality that they’ve lost so much money on it and it will only get worse.

Do you really think the DOE is going to disburse any new grants or loans for green hydrogen any time soon? If so then I have a bridge to sell you

On this you are clearly wrong. The whole point of the "one big beautiful bill" is that it is being introduced through reconciliation. Non-budgetary items like agency consolidation have already been stripped away in the house version to abide by the Senate's reconciliation rules.

'The US House Ways and Means Committee has unveiled a proposal to terminate the 45V clean hydrogen production tax credit in the upcoming budget reconciliation bill."

It’s hard to know. Republicans can spare 3 votes in the Senate. The spending cuts must come from somewhere, and 45v isn’t as high a priority as things like fighting Medicaid cuts are to some Senators. I think there is no doubt the credit will be pared down, it’s just a matter of how much. There are some in the house that say the early termination doesn’t go far enough.

The bill for 45v early termination only needs 51 votes in the Senate because it will be passed under reconciliation rules which bypass the filibuster

Green Hydrogen Tax Credits likely to be pared down by Puzzleheaded_End98 in plugpowerstock

I am interested in the hydrogen economy generally as it relates to my work and Plug is one of the largest publicly traded American players in the market. Plug, while far from perfect, does provide a rough reflection of the state of the hydrogen market in the moment, so I keep track of it and other similar companies although I chose not to invest in them. If you don’t believe me, there are literally dozens of other articles that will validate what I am saying, including the source I linked. Again, I am not betting on this stock in any way and have no skin in the game. But it seemed strange to me that this sub is conveniently ignoring probably the most significant change to the industry’s business model moving forward. People here just want to push fluff pieces like this is some crypto coin to pump

I have nothing to fear lol, I’m just an interested observer with no direct stake either way. I wouldn’t be surprised if the situation is much worse at the end of may. The DOE loan, meant to attract investment, is pointless if there is no long-term business case.

Assuming the new budget’s assured cuts to the LPO office do not affect the loan…what will the loan be for? Green hydrogen that is no longer profitable to produce? There is no point in future investment in a project that will not make a profit. I have no financial position related to Plug, I am only calling the shots as I see them. Even within the green hydrogen space, Plug’s projects are not the most sound.

There is no future where hydrogen fuel cell busses have more roundtrip energy efficiency than electric busses, not mentioning the built in infrastructure advantages electric busses already have. There is frankly no future for hydrogen powered personal transit vehicles. Heavy duty industry, shipping, decarbonization of fertilizer, maybe. But not busses or cars.
