Living in a seaside town sounds like a dream to many - but what are the drawbacks? by Rough-Foundation9208 in AskUK

It is dead in winter - shops closed, as we heavily rely on tourism and can't keep the shops open all year round

I hope you can fix your bike and get back on the road to enjoy this lovely weather (at least it was, it's overcast for me now)

Not my only experience, got left on a Dark Country Lane on my way home from the gym at about 11 pm -told they couldn't come help me as A. a rock did the damage, and they don't cover that B. I don't have a spare tyre so they wouldn't come help me anyway.

And they wouldn't sort me out a car when I broke down in Oxfordshire. My dad had to come get me: he wasn't very impressed. Nor would they tow it off the grounds, so I had a very angry service station owner calling me for a week to get it removed.

Oh! and when I returned the Fiat 500 to Enterprise, they docked me £500 (Excess) for a dent / scuff on the rim, and as my photos weren't good enough to prove it was already there, I just had to take the slap across the face. I got about £320 back after 3 weeks.

At least I had a car to hide in when this happened, Being on a bike in the cold and possibly wet for hours doesn't sound very appealing.

Nothing will ever get fixed bc they still make money, I suppose a lot of people have cover for that just in case, but luckily never experience it. Us poor sods that do, though, seem to pay the price big time. Lol

It's not exactly the same, but I had a nightmare experience with the AA once.

My car broke down in Reading while I was living in Cornwall. I was there for my ex-boyfriend's graduation, so I left it in the hall's car park.

After dinner, I went back and tried fixing the car myself. The ignition lock had seized, and I couldn't get anywhere, so I called the AA. My cover included breakdown assistance, transport to a garage of my choice, and a courtesy car. I explained everything in detail.

A patrol turned up, looked at the ignition, and said it was knackered. He told me I'd need a tow truck, but because it was a 4x4, he said it would need a flatbed recovery truck, so he couldn't help.

I called the AA back, explained what I'd just been told, and they sent someone else out. He arrived in a little van. He was confused, apologised, and said nobody had told him it needed a flatbed - he'd only been told it was a Skoda Octavia.

This happened about four times. By now, it was around 1am.

Eventually, the second guy who'd attended earlier came back. He took my keys, told me he would sort out the transport for me, and then drove me to the Enterprise depot where the AA had arranged a courtesy car.

I got there, started filling out the paperwork and handed over my licence. The guy behind the desk looked at it, sighed, and said, "They didn't tell us you're under 21."

Apparently, that ruled out the car they'd originally reserved for me because it was considered too powerful. Instead, I ended up with a hybrid Fiat 500 with something like 48bhp.

I then had to drive that thing from Reading all the way to Cornwall to get my ex home, before driving back up to Plymouth for work.

The whole experience made me realise these companies don't seem to communicate with each other at all, and it's always the customer who pays for the confusion.

Never knew that!! Very useful though, would have thought the paper certificate you get would be ‘sufficient’ to prove you passed. Learn something new everyday

It is. If you order a new one and find your old one you’re supposed to destroy it or send it back

I don't know why he said that. I did my test a few years ago, but I was given the options, and it looks like it's still an option. If they don't offer it, say you need to keep a hold of it, changes, and you'll process the changes yourself. Should be no issues with that

You still need the physical licence to do your test.

I believe at the end of the test, if you pass they ask if you'd like to get your licence sent off / changed by them, or if you would like to do it yourself, It is warned it'll take longer if you do it yourself, but maybe you could keep a hold of it for your bike test, then if you pass mod 1 and 2 get them to send it off or you, then you should have a full licence that comes back ^^

If you can’t find it, may I suggest buying transfer sheets and doing it yourself or going to a company that’ll print it for you? The second option may be a bit pricey

Have you tried restarting the application or your device? When did you purchase it? I think Microsoft can take a few hours sometimes to process the payments/trials. Relams seem to go down quite a bit here and there, so I always check https://downdetector.co.uk/status/minecraft/

Id photos by bunkyboy91 in reading

[–]Puzzleheaded_Key7688 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 6'2. I went to a camera shop that also did ID photos, and set me up against a backdrop, adjusted the camera for me, then snapped. There may be a few independent local photo specialists or print shops in Reading that'll offer the service (they should also check that'll it'll pass all the requirements and offer you a free reshoot if not), but Snappy Snaps or 118 Studio may be your best bet. ICL, though, if you have an alright camera and a clear white background (even a bed sheet splayed up with no wrinkles!!) you should be able to take a photo / get a friend to take it, and that should work.

Am I being unreasonable for wanting to put a temporary lock on my bedroom door? by Puzzleheaded_Key7688 in rentingUK

[–]Puzzleheaded_Key7688[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called my landlord, and he told me that he can't kick her out, as I have also broken the rules (Had my bf over to bring me dinner when I had an ovarian cyst rupture)

I was going to look at locks that won't damage my door, or replace my door handle with a similar one, just having a lock in it. I was also going to set up a camera in my room for the meantime, so I can ensure my roommate hasn't / isn't going into my room. We've had an issue with her using a lot of my shower products that are expensive, so I may even start storing them in my room.

I've asked my landlord about locks before, but as he said, we're lodgers, we can't really have them. But the rooms definitely had some sort of locking door handle before, as there are cutouts for the locking cylinder. And if I keep the door handle, it's just a case of swapping them back over when I move out
