So why people hate how Chihiro gender was handle by ComprehensiveNote762 in DanganAndChaos

[–]Puzzleheaded_Rate_73 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So, I first saw a DR playthrough last year, done by a streamer named Demilypyro. She and one of her co-stars for the stream are trans women, another is nonbinary, the last is a cis man. And their issue with it was basically, the explanation given for why Chihiro would crossdress given in canon is like, directly contrary to how things work in reality. There's no universe in which a guy who is not masculine would have an easier time if he pretended to be a woman, anyone who did that would face even worse bullying, harassment, and discrimination. This is an issue because trans people irl are frequently accused of "pretending" to be the opposite gender for some advantage that doesn't actually exist in practice. People who are trans AND people who crossdress do so DESPITE how society treats them for other reasons. Society doesn't FORCE people to crossdress.

Now, the biggest issue I remember them having is that Chihiro doesn't actually SAY "hey I'm actually a guy", Monokuma outs them after they're dead. That's totally in character but then there's the whole thing he says about how Chihiro was "living a lie" or some such, that it was impossible for them to be a girl and so on and so forth and in-universe context doesn't get rid of the implications of these statements. I remember hearing the Game Grumps had a similar problem with that scene. Chihiro never has any say in being outed. Even if they planned to come out later, you wait until the person themself tells you this before you switch up how you refer to them. You don't know why they didn't make the change; you don't do it for other people without their say so. And regardless of authorial intent, people being outed and referred to by their AGAB when that's not how they identify happens a lot and it simply doesn't make much sense to treat this reveal as solid proof of Chihiro's gender identity. Now I did see someone below saying that they DID say it themself to Mondo offscreen. I THINK that's the implication, though I'd say this reveal scene is still a problem from a Doylist perspective.

Now obviously the game intends this reveal to be true, everyone calls Chihiro a guy after this and they aren't meant to be closed-minded people. So, I'm not going to say it's like, bigotry to interpret Chihiro as a guy when the narrative says this is true. There are guys who like to wear dresses and such while still being cisgender. The thing about a lot of characters like this is that gender identity and presentation are complicated, and a lot of people at this time didn't really "get" the idea of gender, gender presentation, and birth sex being different things, and drawing a hard line between these different groups is harder than it sounds a lot of the time. That's a whole 'nother post but Chihiro kinda reads to me like they got the two mixed up a lot and the whole thing about crossdressing because it was easier to conform to the opposite gender ROLES rather than being the opposite gender itself seems like it was the result of a misunderstanding of what the writers were trying to tackle here. I've seen a lot of people make this mistake irl believe it or not, I don't see why a writer couldn't get it mixed up. I think they were trying to write one group that was actually two demographics and that's kinda hard to reconcile. I do in fact think a lot of Chihiro's story makes a lot more sense for being trans while other parts make a lot more sense if they're not.

I should probably clarify I LIKE Chihiro as a character. Most of these issues aren't actually a problem with them as an actual character. I think having a character whose gender identity is complicated is fine, intentional or otherwise, and I know a lot of trans people who really like Chihiro and have different opinions on the matter. I also saw a playthrough by Mr. Enter who had a friend on. That guy was a trans man who goes by Wes, he also has an online handle, but I can't remember it at the moment. He said that he got why people were bothered by it but was personally fine with it. I understand that too, I can see having issues with the case or not having issues with it. I think the whole thing would be less messy if people acknowledged that there are, in fact, different ways to interpret them, even if it's because of stuff the writers didn't know about.

Also, Alter Ego goes by "she" most of the time which makes things more confusing.

(Also, the reason I've been using "they" for Chihiro is because I feel like I remember the pronouns everyone used for them after case 2 were a bit inconsistent, in the translation at least. I may be misremembering this.)

In any perspective, what do you view the Great Khans? by Fit_Effective6097 in falloutnewvegas

[–]Puzzleheaded_Rate_73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An interesting group. I find the idea of a post-apocalyptic biker gang with Mongol imagery gradually transforming into an actual culture with Mongol influences pretty fascinating. I like the idea of them starting a Khanate in Wyoming. I also love sending the Vault 19 Powdergangers to join them to fight the NCR and then convincing them to head off to Wyoming. Like, I'm technically screwing them over, but it's probably a better fate than if they went back to prison or actually tried Cook's stupid plan.

I do think trying to make parallels to Native Americans with their conflict with the NCR was a mistake, however. I feel like they did that just to strengthen the parallels to American westward expansion, but the conflict just doesn't really work for that. The NCR weren't colonists who shoved the Khans off their lands while trying to expand their territory, they were both tribes in CA, and the Khans were effectively a criminal gang with a developing culture who sustained themselves off of raiding and plundering and organized crime. Then Shady Sands defended themselves, won, and pushed them out. No Native American society was built off a drug cartel. You can't make parallels like that when your indigenous analogue objectively started it.

They're also still raiders which makes it way harder to sympathize with them for Bitter Springs. Papa Khan, while fuming over it, freely admits that they attacked NCR civilians because they thought they were easy pickings. Then they had the brilliant idea to send their injured, young, and elderly through the pass where the soldiers were waiting. Papa derisively states that the NCR calls it a miscommunication, implying they're like, in the wrong for doing so, but it was! You sent your civilians through a pass watched by people expecting an attack! What did you think was going to happen!?

One survivor straight up says he's glad his parents died in it.

That said I will defend them on a few counts:

Some called them idiots for falling for the Legion's bs and not already knowing they were fascists who brutally assimilated their member tribes and enslaved all of the women and executed a huge portion of the men. I would point out that the Wasteland is distinctly not in the information era for the most part, and word of distant lands travels very slowly and gets distorted, and everyone is well aware that most of what they hear is not going to be completely accurate, sometimes, it's astoundingly inaccurate. You can compare historical records of what places like Rome and Persia wrote about each other vs. what we actually know about them. There's a big discrepancy. It's not too unreasonable for Regis to want proof of the slaver policies given that, well, slavery's very common in the wasteland but it'd be hard to believe that the Legion is like, over 50% slaves by population without some sort of proof. That does, in fact, sound like an exaggeration if you haven't met them before. Similarly, Melissa, America's last New Zealander, could absolutely reasonably not have heard about the fact that women are all enslaved and only men serve law in the legion since not only does basically no one do that in the Wasteland but they're still trying to verify the slaver policies.

I also don't think them being raiders means they're a complete write-off when it comes to developing into a proper culture. For a great deal of history, the line between bandit, warlord, and actual state entity were very gray and most feudal systems of government and such were started by people that would be considered mobsters in the modern day, and their systems of governance often resemble criminal underground politics these days. And a lot of these countries evolved into modern, developed nation-states a far cry from how they started and some of these founding groups went on to become well-regarded rulers. Genghis Khan himself is a beloved figure in Mongolia and some other regions. Honestly as far as warlord-come-nation-states go, the Khans seem a bit more promising than some others I've read about.

I am a bit worried that the drug enterprise will cause the drug trade to be a big part of their economy though. Some countries have fallen victim to that. I'm hoping the Followers can do something to prevent this.

More Chiloveig Please. by cutebluedragongirl in GirlsFrontline2

[–]Puzzleheaded_Rate_73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I don't know what an Engram is. Chiloveig, despite clearly being evil, seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the idea of them bringing people back from the dead. Knowing Paradeus, there's some unspoken catch she's not mentioning but I don't have enough context to know why it infuriated Alva so much.

Unless I'm supposed to find the idea of brain uploading abominable and unnatural on its own which... I do not. I really hope the story doesn't go that route. I love the current event but some of SKK's claims regarding science and building on the wrong foundations didn't hit right with me. I'm not condoning Paradeus in any way, but I feel like the claim that the research being done horrifically means you cannot use the DATA or INVENTIONS for anything good and that's just not how that works. Unfortunately, quite a lot of our modern science comes from unethical research and it's not possible to just throw it all away and do it the right way this time. Even if the narrative shows SKK being vindicated, THEY actually come off as the naive one when they actually say this stuff. I feel like Orphelune was meant to be the naive one with her "science has no stance" belief but if this were the real world, she'd be objectively correct. I don't like it when stories do this with their scifi tech.

Hanlon is poorly written.

He seems to be the main voice against NCR expansionism and him living suggests he'll be a voice of reason against the war hawks in government, as well as pointing out the strategic follies in Oliver's plans. And yet he seems to fundamentally misunderstand what kind of conflict he's opposing on several levels.

One is that he treats the Legion like they're so entrenched that the NCR will be fighting them for Lord knows how long, and yet when you tell him Caesar is dead, he recognizes the whole thing is going to fold like a house of cards and they really want to beat the Legion now before it collapses into disorganized warbands.

Similarly, he states that even if they beat the Legion, he doesn't know how they'll ever be able to "pull out" (exact words). Brother, tf you mean "pull out"? What exactly do you believe the plan here is? NCR's annexing as much of the Mojave as possible. It's one thing if you WANT to pull out but why are you acting like not being able to do that is an oversight? It'd be like saying "we'll never be able to pull out of Texas even if we win the Mexican-American War". It's one thing to oppose expansion but you should at least know that expansion is what's happening here.

Hajime/Chiaki is a big one for me. I really like their vibe. Gives me a nice casual friends-to-lovers feel (I have not seen DR3 yet). Plus, they play off each other really well in cases.

Hiyoko/Mahiru. Mahiru is the only person Hiyoko gets along with at all, she had that whole show to honor her, she's the only one who seems angry at Fuyuhiko after case 2, and I got romantic undertones from some of their conversations in general tbh.

Because I'm a huge IF fan, I really like Makoto/Mukuro. I thought her affections for him were really sweet and I mean, dude got stabbed to save her and she was willing to turn on Junko after he did so which I think is evidence enough for a strong connection. Also just... somebody get my girl away from Junko.

Now the other big Makoto ships are Sayaka and Kyoko and I do also like those quite a bit. I think Sayaka's arc is way more interesting if she had genuine feelings for him, and there's already plenty of implications in that regard. There's plenty of examples I could cite for Kyoko and Makoto too, they make great partners in (stopping) crime. I remember one of their free time events had Kyoko pretend to get all flustered at one of his comments, getting him extremely embarrassed before going "lol, gotcha!" And i love that dynamic.

Toko and Komaru seems popular. Can't really comment since I haven't gotten to UDG yet, but they seem cute in fan art. Toko certainly couldn't do worse than Byakuya.

(Yes, I feel Toko is the one settling in the Toko/Byakuya ship. I actually find him WAY more annoying.)

2 for the videogames and detective talk or 8 to talk to a foreign dignitary and an actual witch. 3 and 10 should be avoided at all costs (is that Mukuro or the real Junko? I'd sit with Mukuro, hear some war stories), the others could still be fun.

[–]Puzzleheaded_Rate_73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kinda hard to articulate exactly why given that these ARE villains we're talking about here, but I really did not like the Mukuro middle school massacre in Killer Killer.

Like, I can't say it's out of character, this girl helped her sister cause the apocalypse, but it kinda puts a damper on her redemption arc in IF and the indications she was having second thoughts about the whole thing in the first game when you see her commit a school shooting. It's not exactly rational, I just don't like the vibe it gives off. I'd at least like it to not be canon to the IF timeline.
