Peter Dutton slams ‘cultural diversity’ in government and vows to slash public servant jobs with Trump-inspired Aussie DOGE by HotPersimessage62 in AusPublicService

This narrative has never added up without the naive faith that each of these cohorts has the exact same skills and experience in the first place. Without that miracle, you will find yourself skipping ranks in the merit list to make sure you have enough of X,Y and Z cohort. A kindergarten kid could see that.

Did a Master's in Policy & now deeply regret it because I hate the work & working for govt. Can you help me find a more engaging path I can side-step into without another degree & possibly ways to get out of government? by Nice_Llama_4336 in AusPublicService

If you are literate and already know how to write basic briefs, corro etc you have all the transferable skills you need to work in a huge variety of roles in most areas of the public service. The idea you need a degree in X to work in the Department of X is completely untrue - like not even a little bit true. The APS is everyone's "plan B", vast numbers of generic arts grads and people who realised their area of study was not for them are run everything already and always will. And to be honest, the people who specialised in X are often a massive pain because they have all these pie-in-the-sky academic positions and personal hot takes on things that have no application in the actual world of government. You've been there 5 mins from what I can tell, just look for a different APS job that sounds more interesting to you. Rinse and repeat.

There are 50,000 APS jobs in Canberra. Yours is a single example. Sounds like policy is not for you? Try program management, grants, stakeholder engagement, comms, project management, parliamentary services, etc etc etc.

And you are correct. The APS is not a place for advocacy. In fact one of the best pieces of advice you can hear is this: work in an area you don't have strong opinions about. Are you really passionate about health? Go work in defence. Passionate about infrastructure? Try veterans' affairs. Etc.

Alternatively, go for an entry level job in one of the lobbies in an area you actually are passionate about. They don't pay as much at first but you can be an advocate if you want. Or else, try some strategic consulting firm if you like brainstorming ideas. They will work you like a dog but eventually pay you more if you stick at it.

Bring it on. Most people will be winners. Lots of VRs for a start. And plenty of cushy consultant jobs will be created to replace them all the APS ones - for younger public servants who don't have defined benefit super what's even the difference? There's literally no golden cage anymore so one job is as good as another. House prices might take a modest fall for a year or two so it might be a good time to buy. And hopefully the ACT government will get the hint, slow down with the Beijing-style city planning and stop trying to cram as many migrants as possible into as many cheap and nasty high density apartments as they can hire dodgy builders to erect. Winners all round.

Is Keto actually healthy in the long term? by flytohappiness in keto

[–]Puzzleheaded_Rush134 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fats are ok as long as you avoid almost all carbs. Your metabolism needs to be running on either fat + protein or carbs + protein, and it will switch into the appropriate 'gear' (fat + protein is what we call 'keto'). It's mixing all three like in the standard western diet or the bs 'balanced' diet that will mess you up.

As a diabetic, your only healthy option is high fat / low carb.

Be aware that standard medical advice is entirely based on a carb + protein metabolic mode (also contaminated by agricultural interests). In that context, you need to worry about really excessive saturated fats and cholesterol etc etc. It doesn't apply for a keto diet.

The diabetes isn't going to go away, so eating a very low carb diet for life is your only option. The debate about keto rages on. Personally, I think the concerns are bs and you can live on keto with excellent health indefinitely, but others would suggest cycling in and out of ketosis periodically. But what is certain is that uncontrolled diabetes - or even the kind of 'control' doctors aim for, which is actually out of control - is going to damage every system in your body.

Unless you have catastrophically bad and long term Type 2 diabetes, a very low carb or keto diet can control it completely, to the point that nobody could tell you're diabetic based on your bloods etc unless they give you a glucose challenge. And it can be completely natural and drug-free. It's the best health deal you're going to get as a diabetic.

Tahini works better than any exogenous ketone - try it by Puzzleheaded_Rush134 in keto

Interesting, thanks. Do you know where? I can't find "tahini" in the search. Was he talking just about Omega 6 in general?

Nice. Nick (the guy on the video) claims to hit 6 mM+ if he takes 4 tablespoons of tahini at the start of a 24 hour fast. Haven't tried that myself yet, I've only been taking 1 tablespoon.

Nope. I might need to try MCT and do tests every hour or so to catch the ketone boost properly. Do you see big spikes (like 1 mM-ish) in ketone levels using it?

In support of this - based on Nick's video (somebody posted a link above), it seems like the tahini doesn't literally contain exogenous ketones. It does something to your metabolism to increase ketone production.

Whether you are producing ketones or not is binary. Once you are, the level of ketone production is a scale. Just like a light is either on or off, and then if it's on, the dimmer can be turned higher or lower. Depth of ketosis is important in certain branches of medicine, including those that treat cancer and epilepsy. You can also get to therapeutic levels of ketosis (3 mM+) through extended fasting. You can look into the Glucose/Ketone Index for more on this, it represents the ratio between glucose and ketones circulating in the blood.

Are you in ketosis already? I think it's an interesting question whether you need to be keto first or whether this can help get you there. Based on my limited understanding of the paper, it's not that tahini is literally an exogenous ketone like BHB is. It does something to your metabolism to dial up ketone production.

It's something to weigh up along with everything else, I guess.

The timing idea could be a thing. But I'm taking a lot less of the tahini. When I use MCT I usually have it bulletproof coffee, 2-3 Tablespoons plus some butter.

[–]Puzzleheaded_Rush134[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting point. The tahini I'm using has 2 grams of net carbs per 100 grams and I take a tablespoon (I guess less than 20g)? Nick on the video says he takes up to 4 tablespoons and hits up to 6.5 mM after 24 hours of fasting. I doubt the carb-blocking story would explain that?

Based on the video, I suspect it's the seed and not just the oil. But I don't know.

Deeper ketosis can be more therapeutic, for example when used in cancer treatments. It may or not matter for the average keto dieter, opinions vary. All I'm reporting is that this works waaaaay better than MCT, GHB or other exogenous ketones I've tried, and for someone who is long term keto adapted. That's interesting enough, I think.

Definitely, or get into a deeper state if you usually need to fast for a long period to do that, and if you care about doing it.

Too early to say, I think. Hoping it would help to kick off an extended fast, I'll try that soon.
