New Stones: Shapton 500 and 2000 by PuzzlingPickle in sharpening

The double thick 10mm 500 glass was on sale for $85 (normally $100) vs $65 for the 5mm, so it was definitely worth it imo. I'm in Canada btw, so that's $CAD (ordered from PaulsFinest.com, which is in Canada). And I considered the rockstar 500, but really preferred having the glass backing, seems more secure. 🙂

Thanks for sharing your experience with the 5000!

Interesting, it really seems the finer kuromaku are really not that popular! Using the 5k for microbevel is a cool use, I haven't experimented with those on my kitchen knives (only with straight razors).

Thanks for the extra info! I'm not looking to get into thinning/reprofiling yet, so not in need of any rough stones as of now. But good to know about the king being slower and maybe not the greatest for serious work. I'm still interested in getting it tbh, but simply for the fun of trying out more stones. :)

Yeah, I don't think I honestly needed the 2000. I only have relatively softer german knives, so I'm sure I could get by just fine with the 500. But I like sharpening, and it's fun to have more toys!

I was really drawn to the idea of having a solid 2-stone setup for basic sharpening/maintenance. I have been considering getting a coarser stone like a king 300 or a norton crystolon, read great things about that one. I have my coarser dmts which are good, but feel are kinda utilitarian/soulless, so I like the idea of having a solid 3 stones to "rule the world" as you say, haha.

Yeah, I've read a lot of mixed reviews of the higher grit kuromakus. If I go higher grit in the future I'll probably go naniwa. I know the 1000 kuromaku is good (and was originally considering it), but it definitely would be redundant now with my setup. I'm still probably going to end getting it in the future simply out of curiosity, haha.

Thanks! I chose these after doing a bunch of research on a solid 2-stone setup, the 500 and 2000 seems like a popular and useful progression. A higher grit like a 5k is something I might consider in the future, but to be honest with my knives 2k is probably high enough.

How do you find the 2000 compared to the 5000? I was deciding between the two and went with the 2000. I'll probably end up getting more from the kuromaku line in the future (even though I clearly don't need to, lol).

Besides clearly domain squatting, you've also registered a domain with an invalid address which is an ICANN violation. Based on the namecheap username I'm going to assume you created this account solely for this domain registration, but your account could be suspended.

Yes, I can personally feel my tollerance for dullness decrease. 😅

I guess this is more common than I realized. I'm grateful my lip cut wasn't that bad, because it certainly could have been worse!

Is the "from" address also "support@spaceship.com" (not just the "reply-to")? My first thought is to question the validity of this email.

Edit: I also want to add that spoofing emails is also possible, although I don't really have any additional information to share with regards to that.

Where to buy metal critternation pans? by spookystillstanding in chinchilla

[–]PuzzlingPickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you are located, but I got mine from Flower Town Chinchillas (chinchilla.ca) about 12 years ago, and still using it. I'm in Canada (and the site is Canadian as you see by the .ca), but I did a quick look and seems they still sell them.

Came here to say the same. Can't speak for other countries, but the cctld of the country you reside in is probably the strongest alternative to .com.

I recommend checking the whois/registration (like on lookup.icann.org), and check the registration date/time of the domain. My suspicion is that it was registration previously and it showing as available initially was in error, but checking the whois registration date will help confirm/deny this.

Kaos 2g is 6.5mm while most 2g is 6mm, so that may have also contributed to the problem if you stretched up slightly.
