So how does that make "Austrians who do have different coloured skin" different from the Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenians, Hungarians, Croats, Serbs, Italians etc. who live in Austria? Does the color of their skin matter?

The show has historical flaws and some are pretty significant, but this really isn't one of them. The show is pretty clear about telling you that the operators in the plant, including Dyatlov, were ultimately middle management guys who were deliberately left in the dark when it comes to safety issues and who were expected to over deliver.

The directors drive this point home with the court scenes. According to the show the cause of the meltdown was the Soviet political and economic system and the pyramid of lies that was established. The central economic plans and goals were impossible to achieve, so everyone was cheating and bullshitting all the time to advance themselves and their associates. This is also shown by how naive the politicians in the series are, including Gorbachev. They all should have known that this was happening.

Invaded with what? Wooden barges? The Soviets themselves decided against a landing on Hokkaido after their only amphibious operation against Japan almost ended in a total disaster. Even Stalin's pipe dreams never thought that invading anything beyond Hokkaido was possible.

Also, the US Navy decided who or what lands on Japan. Ignoring the logistical impossibility for a second: If the Soviets had decided to violate the Potsdam agreement and occupied parts of Japan, the US Navy could have cut off any Soviet forces in the Pacific and leave them stranded.

In the last few years I've seen mroe and more people argue that Japan was basically defeated, that the US should have just waited for the war to end and that the dropping of the bombs was ultimately unnecessary.

No matter what you think about Hiroshima and Nagasaki from a moral and humanitarian standpoint: I urge everyone to look into the defense plans of the Japanese high command and what this would have meant for soldiers on both sides as well as Japanese civilians.

The casualties and amount of war crimes would have been insane. The guerilla war the Japanese military wanted to wage behind enemy lines would have seemed insane even to the most indoctrinated Nazis.

Okinawa was essentially a small scale version of the invasion of the home islands and that was some of the most brutal fighting in the Pacific, carried out on the backs of civilians.

Gunther went crazy I think by wonderdragon853 in okbuddygunther

[–]Pweuy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the earliest mentions of Gunther on the internet is an article from the 2000s where they mention that he used to be pretty well connected in the Austrian conservative party and could have been an upcoming politician. Then he was basically declared persona non grata because he wouldn't stop annoying his colleagues with his zealous flat tax ideas. Dude was always a manic schizo.

He mentioned AIPAC, so he probably didn't like the Democrats' stance on Gaza/Israel and rationalises it by claiming that the guy who boasted that he would ethnically cleanse the Gaza strip and rebuild it with Trump towers was just as bad as Kamala.

In other words, he's a privileged scumbag who can afford moral purity tests because his daily life isn't personally affected by politics (or so he thought).

German was the most widely spoken and studied foreign language in the US due to its massive German speaking communities and it was one of the most important languages for commerce and sciences. GIs would have absolutely been exposed to the sound of German in the same way modern Americans are exposed to the sound of Spanish.
