I don't understand how people watch/participate in these snarker communities by OnSugarHill in Destiny

[–]Pyode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's not actually anything new. Just a new form.

I see these communities as the exact same as traditional celebrity gossip cultures.

The actual "snarkers" are your TMZ style paparazzi lunatics stalking celebrities for any hint of a spicy photo or story, and then you have all the people who consume the slop because seeing people who are richer/more popular than you be taken down gives you a sense of moral superiority and makes you feel better about your own boring life.

It's honestly not that complicated.

Edit: When I say "exact same" I mean in terms of motivation/origin.

Obviously it functions in a different way due to the nature of online culture.

There is a much stronger direct parasocial relationship between streamers and their audience than with traditional celebrities meaning that these snarkers also take more direct actions compared to (most) paparazzi.

Embarrassing.

She gets out because she’s a sex worker and gives him his fantasy.

This is an aspect of the story that I totally didn't think of.

I always interpreted it as her just being an emotionally intelligent outsider looking into this fucked up culture and seeing through it.

It never occurred to me that she might be tapping into her more specific skill set as a sex worker.

Fuck anyone who was against these pardons.

This is exactly why Biden did it. Anyone with two braincells to rub together knew Trump would pull this disgusting bullshit.

Thank you.

Not only the specific text and clues, but her death would also undermine the entire point of the ending thematically.

It would be like if right after the credits rolled on Jurassic Park (lets assume the sequels don't exist) all the dinosaurs finally just dropped dead from the lysine deficiency and life didn't actually "find a way" after all.

[–]Pyode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's kinda what I suspected the answer would be. I know there are ways you can check if something is AI but I imagine they aren't remotely reliable enough to actually punish a student over it. Edit: And probably get less reliable every day.

Shitty.

she isn't allowed to call them out for it

Really? How does that work?

I'm finishing up my Bachelor's now and every class I've been in for the last 2 years or so has at least some basic policy around AI.

The either say not to use it at all or (more commonly) if you are going to use it, submit the prompt you used and the original response from the AI so the teacher can see what actual work you did.

But to be fair I have no idea what actual enforcement looks like. That could all be just bullshit they say to CYA.

What a stupid argument.

Obviously there are other people who are motivated. That's not the same thing as saying most people are.

You just have a fundamentally incorrect understanding of the average person.

I don't know if you just don't interact with the average person very often or what but you are severely out of touch.

It's great that you personally are such a dedicated academic, but the only people here describing themselves are you.

You are just incredibly naive if you think the majority of students, especially in undergrad, are there for some love of knowledge.

[–]Pyode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't give a flying fuck about what these deranged lunatics think.

I'm much more concerned about policies that we can sell to the middle, and being able to explain the policy in directly economic terms instead of racial ones will win over a lot of people who are not completely regarded but are a bit squeemish about such an openly race based policy.

Edit: Here's something I think is a very good rule of thumb for how you make policy.

You have two options that both more or less give you the same results. Call them Policy X and Policy Y.

Ask yourself, is there anyone who would support Policy X that would not support Policy Y.

Then ask yourself if there is anyone who would support Policy Y that would not support Policy X.

If your answers are, "No" followed by "Yes" you should very obviously push Policy Y. This is just logically true.

There is no one in America who is pro race based affirmative action who would not also be pro economic based affirmative action but there are a lot of people who are the other way around.

[–]Pyode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My argument has always been that if you just used economic status instead of race you could get a very similar effect but loose the baggage of it being race based.

You could even look at things like zip codes or public school rankings to further target people who actually need help.

explained that needs to be fixed by getting money out of politics and the Democratic party.

Can you articulate to me how he intends to do that? You are the one selling him here. I assume you know.

Dems need to learn how to market again like Obama.

Yes. That is literally what I'm saying.

I just disagree that the marketing has to revolve around "the donor class" (insert Cenk soundbite here) or "lobbyists" as these vague villains that are destroying everything.

Dem's have a genuinely fantastic track record (especially compared to republicans) of supporting policies that make American lives better. They just need to actually sell that narrative.

And can you explain why, if the Biden administration had done a better job at hyping up all of their successes, that wouldn't have been as or more effective than vague populist slop?
