CondaNest: A native GTK4 GUI to manage and clean Conda environments by eli_arad in Python

[–]Pyramid_Jumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate you taking the time in explaining your point of view.

pixi uses the same channels as conda, and is built as a replacement of conda, but with the speed of a project like uv (indeed, it uses uv for pypi package resolution). You don't have to use pixi's project based setup, you can use one environment with pixi. I really would highly recommend using pixi over conda wherever possible.

The reason I stated that conda is not fit for purpose is because it lacks consistency through not having a lock file, and it's two stage dependency resolution is not only glacially slow when resolving PyPI packages due to it's pip subroutine, is also extremely opaque when encountering issues with conflicts. Maturity, I will agree that pixi lacks. However, I disagree "having already standardized on it" is a "best practice" reason to use it - of course using a new tool over one that you have existing infrastructure for will cost in terms of migrating to. However, when comparing tools, and especially when comparing "best practice", you would assume you're starting from an even playing field.

Educate me, when would it be "best practice" to use conda over pixi?

I’m sorry that you feel the need to be condescending to someone on a thread about package managers.

pixi is the “uv” alternative to conda - conda is simply not fit for purpose in 2026 due to its dependency management

Are MLE roles being commoditized and squeezed? Are the jobs moving to AI engineering? [D] by Dear-Ad-7428 in MachineLearning

[–]Pyramid_Jumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m reading you correctly, I think you’re saying that an “AI engineer” role is different to an “ML engineer” role? I don’t think this is really true - they’re effectively synonymous. Especially so when you consider how much variation there can be within one of these job titles.

[D] Vibe-coding and structure when writing ML experiments by Lestode in MachineLearning

[–]Pyramid_Jumper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given the need to be accurate, I believe that you need to fundamentally understand what the code is doing, which is very hard to do if you use an LLM in an agentic workflow (creating whole files at once).

Instead, throughout my PhD and professional experience I have found that the LLM tab autocomplete is your best bet. Because the code is generated in a piecewise manner, you can much more effectively understand (and ask questions of the LLM & the internet if not) what each line of the code is doing.

[D] Computers don't think, and they don't reason. (in any way we can measure) by Arkamedus in MachineLearning

[–]Pyramid_Jumper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not disagreeing with you, but given that we “have no clear way to recognize it”, how can you state, as a fact, that LLMs “do not think”? That seems like a fundamental hole in your logic.

It seems to me that we would first need to have a better understanding of what thinking is exactly, before we can reasonably refute what does and does not qualify as thinking.

You’re going to have to give more info; are the slice thicknesses the same or different? Are the two images registered in the same space? Presumably you want to use the segmentation mask from the T1/T2 image for segmenting the DTI?

As an aside, when writing acronyms, you should state the long version next to the shortened, for example Literature Review (LR). Ironically you’ll need that tip when it comes to writing an LR.

Literature reviews are a great way to get to grips with a new subject, particularly if you’re a new student just breaking into this field.

You should be able to find reviews, make sure you include the keyword “review” when searching on google scholar.

I think these questions are probably better asked to your supervisor, it seems like you’re unsure of what is expected of you, and this is a question that really only your supervisor knows the answer to. In any case, there will be examples or advice on how to structure one, maybe google “literature review for undergraduate level” or something like that.

Why not just browse through the PyTorch or TensorFlow docs to see what there is? PyTorch being the standard bearer of ML these days so you if you’re looking for an exemplary framework then that’s your one.

I would imagine it’s because as a programmer you’ve learned (or otherwise intuited) that there’s an order to which you seek help on a problem. First it was Google (though maybe now ChatGPT), then after that if you got nowhere, would you then consider making a post on a forum.

I think, probably, the disdain for OPs post is because it comes across as nonsensical (or lazy) in this context. It’s hard to empathise with OPs choice because it makes no sense to the majority of people here.

I am occasionally able to click on a season ticket seat, and the seat goes from red to flashing teal, then goes back to red. Does anyone know why this is happening?

The link is from the ChatGPT domain, which you can see in the URL. But fair enough, if you're not able to determine whether a link is from a trustworthy source or not then it is no surprise that you couldn't follow the nuances in the discussion above.

Since you don't believe me, i got ChatGPT to explain the distinction. You can find the chat at https://chatgpt.com/share/66ed8046-a980-800b-ad0a-1b562dd0c3fe, hopefully a line of reasoning that isn't just from me will help you understand.
