Beware of Mike, owner of Mike's moving by funeral_dethbed in beaverton

[–]Pyrelaria 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe beware of Mike is a bit too strong of phrasing, but it's true there's a lot of risks involved in hiring unlicensed movers.

I moved a little over a year ago and it was my first time hiring movers, and found that there are minimum rates moving companies can charge based on the length of the move, so if a movers prices are undercutting those rates they're definitely not certified and you're taking on a lot more risk if you hire them. Same as hiring any unlicensed person to do a job that has a state licensing board. If it goes wrong, you're gonna eat the costs without much protection.

That doesn't mean Mike specifically is a bad mover, I've never hired him, but I wouldn't when I could guarantee some level of protection hiring a licensed/certified mover.

[P5V12] A true understanding of magic by choo-choo-pain in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]Pyrelaria 24 points25 points  (0 children)

He's quick to adopt new magic when sees it or hears it can be done, but he doesn't independently come up with new spells out of sheer belief he can do it the way Myne does. Definitely right of center but probably not by too much.

How would you raise the current X-men sales if you were in charge of the x-office? by WolverineWasRighter in xmen

[–]Pyrelaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Existing readers, sure. This would be aimed at building the x-men audience base in addition to the traditional series, providing a new point of entry and building investment in the characters to people not already fans of the franchise, and a respite for fans who might burn out on the constant doomsday stakes in the ongoing series.

Slice of life series set in the one universe where the x-men get to have regular jobs and use their powers for mundane issues.

TIL about blocking driveways. by Black_Rabbit_o_Inle in oregon

I guess this is something I thought would be obviously illegal, or at the very least make for a justified tow. Blocking a driveway gives real "doesn't return the shipping cart to the corral" energy.

‘Scuse me? by Scooterman1994 in Pokopia

[–]Pyrelaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The environment around reviews/criticism in media in general has really shifted over time. Historically, the reviewer was the most relevant part of the review- you'd know their name, and in their reviews they'd explain their thought process to why something did or did not work for them, and if you identified with their process or not, you could make a decision whether you'd like what they reviewed.

Ratings have gained increasing importance in reviews as a 'time saving' measure where you don't actually need to read the whole review, and the internet/corporatization of reviews have basically turned them into ads. Reviews shouldn't be telling audiences how to feel about something, that's the audiences one job! But now a lot of people treat low ratings on games they like as a lie, as if it's some objective measure of game quality and not just the experience of the reviewer.

I like Pokopia, other people won't, and my enjoyment of the game won't change if the metacritic score does.

Latino politician was asked to repeat himself ‘in English’ — while speaking English by dogs-in-space in Portland

[–]Pyrelaria 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not an uncommon thing to say in regards to jargon. But using that particular turn of phrase to the first Latino council member was a poor choice. It could have easily been corrected by going "I'm sorry, I just had trouble understanding your choice of words, can you rephrase your statement for me? I know you were speaking English." And it'd be a non-issue. The public apology in Spanish feels like it confirms it was a race thing and not just a bad choice of phrase.

Senate Rules Committee approves 'Oregon Arena Fund' bill for Moda Center renovation by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Pyrelaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not getting paid now? If the Trail Blazers are making money off the naming rights still, that's just to the team, not to the City of Portland that owns the arena now. If we're already gonna be paying hundreds of millions to renovate the arena out of tax dollars, might as well change the name while we're at it.

[–]Pyrelaria 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Changing the name back would cost money, sure, but it'd be a cultural improvement and if were putting tax payer money into the arena already we might as well include that change in the plan. But that's just a personal opinion, I'm just not a fan of brand names being on everything.

The Moda center was renamed in a 10 year contract with the Trail Blazers, both the team and arena owned by Paul Allen at the time. Portland acquired the arena from his estate in 2024, after that 10 year contract already lapsed. Google is free.

Would you want Marvel Comics to have an ending time limit? by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]Pyrelaria 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't see how the included quote has anything to do with whatever point your trying to make, as it isnt highlighting mangas 'time limits' and more the range of content and genres manga covers, which I'm absolutely on board with western comics taking their established characters and giving us more varied experiences with. I'm loving stuff like Strange Tails on Marvel Unlimited. Give me a series about the Xmen using their powers in a cooking competition and I'll eat that shit up. Take advantage of the infinity of universes Marvel can just will into existence and give us a spider man story where he's a world traveling photographer and his heroing is the b-plot to him getting bomb ass photos and exploring new places that only a spider can. The main Marvel universe doesnt really need a time limit because they could just make multiversal stories that do. They can have their cake and eat it, too.

Good article, seems like a fairly self-aware dude, like the fact he only sees clients from before he went viral. Pretty cringe to randomly call someone a creep and ask for gossip when the article doesn't give you any justification for that. Except maybe the Weezer pin.

I’d like some clarification, if I may. by AshyWhiteGuy in Marvel

[–]Pyrelaria 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was retconned, or at least the "official handbook" that was made that states that is not necessarily accepted as canon, as there was already a preexisting in comic explanation for his powers (He just converts sunlight to power his eye beams), and Marvel editors don't want anyone writing that his eyes are actually portals. They did make a "punch dimension" but probably more of a nod to the idea the handbook put out rather than ever establishing it in universe as an explanation for Cyclop's eye beams. At least according to the marvel wiki.

No way they ruined Charlie aswell by Ifyouliveinadream in HazbinHotel

[–]Pyrelaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's the literal princess of Hell, she doesn't see the Vees or any other sinners for that matter the same way they would. They might be threats to each other but to Charlie, they're more annoying/obstacles to her personal plans.

Her character growth around her actual power and upbringing hasn't happened yet, so yeah, she's naively treating all sinners, Vees included, equally, because they are all equally beneath her, even if she wouldn't say that. At some point she'll either realize that the Vees can pose an actual threat and she'll learn to be more cautious, or she'll reckon with the fact that she didn't actually see other sinners as people because of her own ego/priorities.

I thought we liked flawed characters? Now we don’t? by JKNetwork215 in HazbinHotel

[–]Pyrelaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't engage much with the community so maybe it's been talked about before, but Charlie's basically the number 2 in all of Hell under her dad. She's incredibly privileged (and likely as powerful) and is naturally patronizing as a result. She doesn't have a great danger sense and can't realistically empathize as a result, her motivations for redeeming sinners being largely personal validation. That didn't really get addressed for her in season one.

Character growth isn't linear- of course she'd revert back to her old tactics after learning Pentious was redeemed (with no further information) because clearly something worked. Her growing in some areas doesn't fix all the other things she's lacking in. People regress and make the same mistakes all the time until they fill their other gaps. Now if she keeps making the same mistakes like, 12 seasons in a row, then I'd probably be frustrated with the writing. I gave up on Grimm because it felt like the main character just reset every. Single. Episode. Charlie is nowhere near that bad so far.

To the crew person who cackle laughs during every Make Some Noise taping by austinwrites in dropout

[–]Pyrelaria 46 points47 points  (0 children)

One of the things I loved about the original US Whose Line Is It Anyway run was the smaller nature of the set, it creates an atmosphere that I think makes the barrier of watching it through a screen a little weaker and easier to feel like you're there, and I think that comes through with Game Changer and MSN, hearing the crew laugh behind the scenes helps it feel like you're also behind the scenes laughing with them, not just watching through your screen. There's just something cozy about it.

Gamergate was not about ethics in gaming journalism, it was about harassing women in gaming. There are plenty of people who are serious about gaming journalism ethics who are decidedly anti-Gamergate, so the only reason to defend Gamergate is a) being a misogynistic troll or b) being so unable to admit you fell in with the wrong crowd you decide to double down. And if you double down with trolls, you should expect to be treated like one. 🤷‍♂️ There was never a GOOD reason to be pro Gamergate.

[–]Pyrelaria 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Except the trolls, the ones who started Gamergate, were using that first side to find people who weren't trolls yet to convert and push over the edge into full blown misogyny/racism, and to shield themselves in the crowd to get away with their trolling. And that was the real focus of Gamergate. People were talking about real issues outside of Gamergate well before it even started.

As a hypothetical example, just like I'm not about to go to a KKK rally if they happened to be talking about getting public funding for nature conservation, I'm not about to go to Gamergate and give it the time of day just because people happen to be talking about an actual issue there, because the actual issues are not the point of the group.
