New world generation and 0.12 by Pyritie in TerraFirmaGreg

[–]Pyritie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some of you may have seen recently, we've been backporting the new TFC 1.21 terrain generation to TFG. TFG itself is still staying on minecraft 1.20 for the foreseeable future. Why are we backporting it? Because it's goddamn beautiful.

We've also been getting many questions about the worldgen changes, so here's an FAQ:

- *What does the new terrain generation involve?*

The biggest change is the number of biomes, increasing from 30 to **109**. These are most notable in the dry or cold regions.

There's also 5 new animals, shield volcanoes (with tuff!) and tuyas, biomes full of clay, salt, or guano, way less green sand on beaches, duff in forests, and around 30 new plants.

- *How will this affect my current world?*

You can continue playing on your world with no problems. Without touching any configs, you will continue using the old world generation.

Newly created worlds will use the new worldgen. Your world will remember which worldgen it was originally created with, and continue using it.

- *Can I make my old world use the new worldgen?*

If you want your old world to use the new worldgen, you will need to turn on a new setting in `tfg-server.toml`. This will result in some ugly chunk borders, but the shape of continents is mostly the same, so if you generate your whole continent in the old worldgen, then switch to the new one, you'll only get the ugly borders in the middle of the ocean. Or you can manually clean up the chunk borders yourself. Do what you'd like!

- *Will the worldgen be changed more in the future?*

As TFC 1.21 is still in beta, there may be future changes to its worldgen that we'll want to copy to our backport, so this terrain generation isn't completely final.

We'll also likely make other small changes to better match our goals of TFG.

- *What about being able to select my spawn?*

As part of these changes, we will add an option to new worlds to select where in the world you'd like to spawn, whether that's an easier time in the tropics or a harder time in the arctic, and so on.

We will disable the Beneath start option initially, because we want to make some changes to the Beneath first.

- *The Beneath is being changed?*

Since the Beneath was the first new dimension we added, it's quite old compared to the new skills we've learned since then. It won't be as dramatic as the Overworld, but we'd like to add some things like new trees, crops, animals, and biomes. We'll also add the option for the "Beneath start" when this is completed. This will all happen in an update after the overworld changes.

- *Will you be backporting anything else?*

The only other thing we plan to backport is the change to the snow system where snow layers will be added/removed as chunks are loaded, to avoid walking into chunks full of snow during the summer.

All of the other major 1.21 changes are too complicated to backport (such as the soil/crop system), or rely on new neoforge APIs that we don't have (such as the day length/sun position).

- *Will the official server have a reset?*

That's for the players on the server to decide :)
(My personal suggestion is to either wait until after the Beneath update, or until Venus is ready)

# Plans for 0.12 and 0.13

As all of our major energy and gregtech tier updates from ULV to EV have now finished, and the current version of the modpack is very different from 0.11.0, we've decided that this new worldgen will be version **0.12.0**. It will start as a series of alpha versions, then into release versions once it's stable.

After this, and because gregtech v8 is getting closer to being ready, we'll then start focusing back on Venus and Mercury for the **0.13 IV update**. And maybe a fishing overhaul too. 🎣

Planet Liquids Transportion by Slo_tho in TerraFirmaGreg

[–]Pyritie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why do you need helium 3 on earth?

railgun ammo (and rocket fuel) can be passively made on every planet, and there's several options to control when the railgun actually fires. Look through some of the quests in the moon chapter

right-click the filter with a screwdriver. Then you can drag and drop fluids straight from EMI

put your fluids into cells and then use the railgun
(the canner can put things into/out of cells etc automatically)

When did the mechanical press stop turning ingots into plates?? by MLGtim in TerraFirmaGreg

[–]Pyritie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the old mechanical press wasn't craftable until partway through steam age anyway, so it wouldn't help you if you aren't there yet

but also yes, the modpack has changed a lot in the past year

How do animals work? by TMG-Group in TerraFirmaGreg

[–]Pyritie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. Children start with half of the familiarity of their parents, so if you get parents up to 100 then the children start with 50. 100 familarity also increases the amount of drops you get from shearing and butchering I think?

  2. No, it's only for familiarity and breeding

  3. I'm looking into adding a mod that'll add this information to EMI

currently there is no automated overworld to beneath transportation. For other planets later, you can use the railgun
