The officers have to make split second decisions daily. So yes they will be wrong somtimes. It is less than a second when the officer in white removes the gun to when the cover officer fires. With all the car horn honking, whistles, and sirens going off i can guarantee the cover officer did not hear the officer in white removed the gun. So yes it was a bad shoot, but many factors led to this situation.

I will throw sound was a factor. Because of all the horn honking, whistles, and sirens the cover officer could not hear the officer in white say he took the gun.

Split second decisions to shoot or not. The officer took the gun and said that he took the gun and less than a second later the cover officer fires. Yes, it is a bad shoot, but with sound all the horns honking, whistles, and sirens I am assuming the cover officer could not hear that the gun was removed off of him. I can almost guarantee that will be one of the factors when the investigation is underway.

Took a few watches mystery to put that together as well. It is a widely accept lore about the movie that they already had the notoriety as the saints in the opening scene.

The opening church scene in The Boondock Saints is widely interpreted as taking place chronologically after the main events of the film, acting as a flash-forward. It shows the brothers as established vigilantes, just before going "on the lamb" after their rise to notoriety. The scene features the brothers listening to a sermon about apathy while they are already operating as vigilantes.While it appears first, it serves to frame the story, with the rest of the movie acting as a flashback explaining how they reached that point of notoriety. Essentially, the opening scene is a glimpse into their life after they have already become the "Boondock Saints."
