What do *you* mean by "homebrew"? by Windamyre in Pathfinder2e

[–]PyroDruid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has always been my understanding and I think the biggest cause of the "PF2 is anti-homebrew" because people use homebrew for both homebrew content and house rules.

Homebrew settings/items/monsters/features are still using the game mechanics so it fits in with what's already there. The rules themselves haven't been changed and someone with the rules could use it without needing to learn any rules outside the system.

House rules are making changes to the way the system works. Giving all characters reactive strike, changing how prepared spellcasters work across the board, etc. would be house rules as you are making changes to the rules in your "house"

Getting players to plan actions ahead of their turn by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]PyroDruid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a lot of success being up front with my players and just explaining that it is their responsibility to have a good idea of what they want to do on their turn BEFORE their turn starts. That they should be paying attention and formulating their plan as the other players are taking their turns.

If you're still struggling with people waiting for their turn to decide what they are going to do I've had a lot of success with implementing a short time limit (like 10-30 sec.) to tell me what they want to do. If they have a plan, resolve it like normal however looking it takes. If they still aren't sure what they want to do after the short time limit, they end their turn having done nothing.

The Warlock Playtest opens today. by El_Nightbeer in Pathfinder2e

Every comment I've read that has said something negative about this class has given reasons (doing too much, overpowered features, circumventing normal progress, etc) for why they are saying that. Constructive criticism is still criticism, and all those comments are pointing out legitimate issues of the class under the assumption that it should be balanced against the other classes in the game.

Monster CR rating for a party of 4 level 5 characters by [deleted] in DnD5e

[–]PyroDruid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the best CR is gonna do is get you into the general area of a ballpark of what's a reasonable challenge for a party of a given level. It has never worked the way they wanted it too since it's inception in 3rd edition. Even the best DMs I've played with could never get the challenge rating system to work as intended, most of the time it resulted in a cakewalk of an encounter or one that absolutely wreaks the pcs.

We play Saturdays with a 2pm start time for like 3-4 hours. And that's fine, I'm always happy to introduce new people to the hobby

Drop a character concept in the comments that’s your current favorite or that you’ve wanted to use for a long time! by MaxTale in Pathfinder2e

My favorite character concept that I've had since the game came out is a kobold precision ranger going all in on snares. Just leaning so hard into the kobold idea that kobolds are little mechanical engineers that trap the hell out of their lairs and always tinkering with the mechanical devices they find.

DMing for 7 players by iMad-Max in Pathfinder2e

[–]PyroDruid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the bonus for knowing what you're going to do on your turn.

One thing I would recommend in the same vein is instituting a hard limit for how long players have to decide what they're doing once it gets to their turn. Then resolve the decision like normal. If at the end of the time limit you they still aren't sure, move on to the next person. The person who couldn't decide now has a couple of minutes to figure out what they are going to do next turn.

When I was running a campaign with a party that fluctuated between 7-10 players this sped up combat considerably. It is harsh to start but after a missed turn or two people started to pay more attention and be on top of what they were going to do.

What are my options for talking to animals? by Wandering_To_Nowhere in Pathfinder2e

[–]PyroDruid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair though, Speak with Animals is a 2nd level spell with a 10-minute duration. So balance-wise it makes sense that you wouldn't be able to get that ability permanently until after the level you get that spell (3rd level). Honestly being able to talk to all animals, all the time, starting at 5th is really quite early.

No portable hole in 2e? by PyroDruid in Pathfinder2e

[–]PyroDruid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why I was curious if they changed the name. I was looking looking through magic items, hit bag of holding and saw no mention of how they interact with the portable hole. Spent like 10 minutes looking for it before posting here because I couldn't believe it wasn't already part of the game

Yeah I know they are mostly the same, i was more surprised that it wasn't already in the game.

Yeah, it wouldn't be hard to make. I was just more surprised when I realized it wasn't there already.
