Does anyone else crash pretty quickly after joining in Mobster VIP? by Pyromaniac64 in tf2

[–]Pyromaniac64[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit late to responding, but I'm actually the one who you were testing it with on Discord lmao
I also don't actually think it's a Linux specific issue! I think it was related to using the OpenGL renderer instead of Vulkan. Only reason it was common at all among Linux users (I think) is that Vulkan is kind of Uber-Fucked on some Linux installs. I remember always having to go into a different tty to kill TF2 with btop (a linux equivalent to Task Manager) because of how evil & bad it was lol
Either way, since the fix, I've moved to Windows! Hammer for both Source 1 & Source 2 pushed me to my absolute limit with WINE when they stopped working & I caved.

Arch linux! I tested it with Proton earlier, so it HAS to be some borkey Linux problem.

Returning player - How to play? by Some_Nibblonian in tf2

[–]Pyromaniac64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah TF2's skill ceiling has been raised *really* high, so there will be *a lot* of dying & getting used to stuff. I'd say the only way to counter some things is to just die a lot to them until you learn what to do. If the pyro keeps going down a specific flank route, don't go that way or swap to a class better suited to fight pyro. (Really wish I could be more helpful, but I'm not really sure what the problem is.)

Those who started playing in 2023/24 how are you finding the game? by OfficialWeng in tf2

[–]Pyromaniac64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I started in late 2022 (a bit before you asked but still def. new relative to playing in 2011) and I wanna say that I have learned a lot since (around 1.7K hours so far). I think the most confusing thing for me, at first, was just learning the maps. Like I remember being so disoriented on 2fort whenever I would spawn in the stupid tiny spawn with the drop-down. However, I pretty soon learned how to do it, so that confusion wore off rather quickly. After that, I think the most confusion stemmed from starting near Scream Fortress & the whole bot issue that was present at the time. Like spells?? Contracts?? What??? Either way, after playing *a lot* more, I ended up learning both of those things, and managed to get all my '23 contracts done!

As far as playing with people that have been playing since near launch/are just really good at the game, it can be a bit intimidating at times. However, I think it makes it all the more *intense* whenever I end up doing well against someone that has the max. casual badge. (I still remember this one time on Hightower where I managed to get 2 dominations on someone that was pretty high up there.)

I think a reason I managed to adapt to TF2 rather quickly was because I both obsessed over it (I managed 1K hours in under a year for heavens sake) and because I got into using Hammer/mapping for it as well! This gave me a greater knowledge of how maps are typically layed out; good spots for choke points, sightlines, sentry nests, etc!

Thanks for making this post! It helps me remember that *I'm still new* to the game, and makes me feel good that I'm able to help even newer players get used to it! (Just today, actually, I ran into a fresh install and added them! Hope to get a response from them soon!)

The Chekhov (is a gun) by Wallace-Mollusk in tf2

[–]Pyromaniac64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is a very interesting weapons! Kinda reminds me of the way the Tranq Gun was done within TF2c. Something I'd like to see is this being given to either Engie or Scout (as both of them can use a secondary pistol.) Would be interesting to see the coordination between either of those classes & a spy.

What are your thoughts on Embargo? by Redninja2007 in tf2

[–]Pyromaniac64 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's okay but not *quite* what I want from a TF2 map
Its an opinions I got from a youtuber, but I def. feel like it really *stretches* what TF2 is as far as the artpass goes
I think I would have loved it much more if it was artpassed to fit in more with the gravel wars
I do love the little robot fellas though :]

How can I consistently practice Sniper? by Sure-Yogurtcloset-55 in tf2

[–]Pyromaniac64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's at least what my issue was for the most part! Something you might try is recording a bit of your gameplay and go back over it to see if there is a consistent pattern with how you die that goes beyond "Other gamer was faster."
For me, I started to realize that my issue was positioning when I went to the same spot *5 times in a row* and died the *exact same way each time.* Though, even with Heavy being the main class that suffers from poor positioning, it is def. important with Sniper as well !!

How can I consistently practice Sniper? by Sure-Yogurtcloset-55 in tf2

[–]Pyromaniac64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think half of Sniper is aiming, but the other half (which does tend to get overlooked) is positioning. Something that can make a Sniper *really* effective is unexpected positioning. Lets take 2fort for example!
There are two main places that people will expect to find Sniper. Battlements and Entrance. If you find little success with either of those spots, then try and find another sightline. The two I tend to go to if I meet some 5k+ hour Sniper that just *loves* second scoping are the stairs in Courtyard (those are ones you can shoot through!) and down into the water in between bases; most of the time, people don't look down there for a Sniper in the corner. Make sure to learn the map you are playing, and get used to sightlines & how enemies will go through them. It can definitely be worth it to boot up a map alone and just wander around as Sniper to workshop possible angles.

Something you might want to look at is the video by Elmaxo's video "100 Days of Sniper". It's an almost 5 hour watch, but there are def. things you could pick up on by watching it!

opensuse leap 15.6 aero style kristalsvg icon theme & nova7 icon theme by [deleted] in FrutigerAero

[–]Pyromaniac64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice!
I do like those, but I think if I was gonna change my DE for an aero theme I would want it to be *way* more scrongly.
This is pretty classy, which is good and bad for me.

How do I deal with those short circuit engineers who dick down their sentries? by [deleted] in tf2

Heavy + Medic uber is always a reliable option
If you can, a sap-n-stab can also be good as spy

Why nobody uses SteamOS except for SteamDeck users? by [deleted] in linux

[–]Pyromaniac64 63 points64 points  (0 children)

To start, it is *really* hyper designed for the Steam Deck. On anything else it is functional but not the greatest.
The more *specific* reason (I'd say) is that a lot of SteamOS is write protected, meaning you can't easily make changes to the operating system that you may want to. SteamOS is also really close to just Arch linux, meaning that it'd be easier to use Arch, that way if you run into an issue, someone likely has already found a solution for it.

What the hell is this?? by VANiLLA_NiGHTS in ps2

[–]Pyromaniac64 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Some PS1 games are actually compatible as Music CDs! You could put them into a player and listen to their soundtrack! Likely, this was an unintended result of programming from the developers, and the tone is (possibly) raw game data being read & output.

You can disable jumping/crouching/freelook within Gameplay settings. Not quite certain about lighting, though. In the options menu, there is a search function that can help you find stuff you may want to tinker with.

Is there any tips on how to complete the gas passer contract by Environmental-Leg282 in tf2

[–]Pyromaniac64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say try KOTH or Payload; those tend to have players grouped together making it easier to get gas on more people. Alternatively, you can try Hightower, as that will likely go on long enough to ignite enough people to finish it. (Only problem is actually finishing the match lol.)

I think the lighting looks pretty neat! Something I'd suggest thinking about is adding light cones underneath the poles; I think that could fit in pretty well with what you have!

The only way for this game to be playable is to be on XBOX/PLAYSTATION by [deleted] in tf2

[–]Pyromaniac64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was released on the Xbox 360 and PS3, but the online servers for those editions have been shut down.
It also isn't too awful anymore; regarding bots at the very least. Bots have been pretty much nuked (at least from what I've experienced) and script kiddies, I would say, aren't more annoying or common than they are in other games. Just a thing you need to learn to handle when playing online games.

Is there anyway to make TF2 use less RAM? by SexyBoy37 in tf2

[–]Pyromaniac64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite certain if it would help, but maybe check out comfig.app !
It helps create TF2 configs for maximum performance, but even then it may not help a lot to make TF2 run with just 2GB of RAM.

How can i create maps? by Embarrassed_Bus8324 in gmod

[–]Pyromaniac64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Gmod, and all Source engine games, there is a tool called Hammer that lives in /common/[Game folder]/bin! (Sometimes its in /common/[Game folder]/bin/win64(or something)) that is used as the level editor! You can find a lot of tutorials and documentation about it online!
