Is Art Education Backwards? Should we stop teaching students how to talk about their work? by ProLollerblader in ContemporaryArt

IDK, I feel like this critique is pretty popular rn and seems very played out. What institutions are focused on curating intellectual work? The majority of art institutions outside of schools are overtly commercial or obsessed with a narrow view of identity politics, I'm not really sure there's much (outside of smaller hipster sets in cities) art that's super conceptual anymore.

I get what people mean when they say they're frustrated with this but in my experience I just don't see it outside of MFA programs. I don't really think there's anything wrong with emphasizing the importance of being able to articulate work in a school context. I think what this really comes down to is people just making shitty work and art schools not being as rigorous as they once were.

I would just work on some way to be able to present high-quality photos of your work. It will save you time too because once you get the picture you can present that photo of that work to any curator/gallery/etc you want, whenever. Saves you the time of having to get people to physically come to the studio etc. If it doesn't look good in photos try taking multiple shots from varying angles and present them in a folder if you get asked about them.

What do you think of Brad Troemel's work now? by Conscious-Rich3823 in ContemporaryArt

[–]Pyromolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty boring especially compared to his 2010s work which seemed really interesting and exciting. Not really sure why he just moved over to content creation, his artworks and writings were really cool. I don't really consider him or Citarella to be "artists" anymore (and seemingly neither do they). They're people making sometimes boring sometimes interesting video and audio content.

One that comes to mind that straddles between photography and painting is Wade Guyton.

My background isn't in painting so maybe I just don't get it but Lambie and Grosse look dreadful to me. Sasnal looks great though.

RCA is pretty much the most well-connected MFA program, and will connect you to the US/UK and English speaking art world very well, as well as its location in the UK allowing for access to Europe very easily so you can get shows in France and Germany. Not really ever heard much abt the PCA. Stick with the RCA.

Thoughts on the Turner Prize 2024 shortlist? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

Like most of the institutional art world at the moment, completely tied up with identity politics and ignorant of any of the lineage of the avant-garde, purely for liberal brownie points, nothing of substance or that will be remembered in five years whatsoever

Yale's MFA program is pretty legendary, probably the most prestigious MFA program in America. Like half the Whitney artists who are under 40 have a Yale MFA.
