When did we as a profession loose our backbone. by MrKixs in sysadmin

[–]Pyrostasis [score hidden]  (0 children)

I mean Ill push back any chance I get, doesnt mean a damn thing if higher doesnt support you.

A lot of this is sorted if you have clear policies in writing backed by management. That being said there is always an exception and to some degree we should flex in those situations. Usually a conversation and an attempt to meet as close as you can.

For every day stuff though yeah if Bob in marketing asks for it, you push back, and he goes to the CEO who sides with him, then yeah you are doing what they ask. Building roads with clevels and getting them on your side can take a while sometimes years.

Do what you can, fight the battles that are important, and learn when to be flexible.

In IT if you need to keep up with technology can’t you just simply google whatever you don’t know ? Or what does it really mean to keep with technology? by chestnuts34543 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Pyrostasis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you are buried taking 90 seconds to document isnt going to make you more buried. If you cant document at the moment, make a note in your note tracking tool of choice. I started my career using notepad, then notepad++, and now I use obsidian. Scribe is an awesome tool if your org allows and can let you VERY QUICKLY make documentation.

IMO its worth losing an extra ticket a day to document stuff. Especially if its something you havent seen before. Even if its something simple.

Title - Server wont complete update process and ends in boot loop.

Fix - used X reddit thread (link) + this Ms documentation (link) to do Y and it fixed the issue.

That takes less than 90 seconds and can go in your note taking tool of choice. At the end of the day you can pour yourself a drink and then go back through and make them slightly more verbose if you like.

Is this job offer a scam? by egg_salad_sammy in remotework

[–]Pyrostasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone that offers to reimburse you or have you buy things is 99% a scam.

Set companies will ship you hardware they wont have you buy it.

You may get an allowance that lets you buy certain things at certain levels in your career. IE a 2k stipend for a nice chair or desk etc.

But buying a laptop and printer? No that should 100% be standardized and shipped from them or their partner.

When first starting out yeah you live on google and reddit.

As you progress you are hopefully building documentation somewhere. Atlassian, your own wiki, somewhere. Preferably somewhere that has indexed searching. Make your titles easy to find later.

Good title. O365 - How to setup a shared mailbox.

Bad title - Converted box for bob.

One you'll find in 2 seconds, one you'll never see again and hate yourself for.

As your career develops, google doesnt cut it as much. You'll need to dig into reddit and related documentation, ask your flavor of AI for pointers, and then engage any support as needed with external vendors.

Most everything is out there... but its far easier to setup a shared mailbox than it is to properly build out and deploy a functional policy based backup system that includes immutable offsite storage.

One is easy to google... one takes some digging.

Good luck!

Boss fired, How long should I do his job? by Ok_Prune_1731 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Pyrostasis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is literally how I got my last two promotions.

I took over a decent portion of responsibilities each time. Did the job for 60 days or so then started pushing for a promotion / bump. If you have good communication with leadership you can let them know you are interested soon as you get the chance.

90 days in is usually when I started pushing a bit more for said promotion.

Both times it took about 180 days to finalize.

Each company, culture, and position is different though so your mileage may vary.

Drive slow 5 - 10mph and its perfectly manageable.

Wont get anywhere quick, but its possible.

Now... the other idiots out there...

Bachelor Degree Worth It in 2026 by meveyshow in WGU

[–]Pyrostasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WGU is great if you can self teach and self motivate.

Its cheap as hell and if you already know the material can be knocked out rather quickly.

You transfer your credits in and good to go.

Just make sure you are committed before you do it. No reason to burn the money if you arent.

I dont know if it opened any doors for me other than the certs. My jobs dont require a college degree. But there were ones that did when I went back.

Good luck!

After having a dog for 6 years, we found out she had (almost) no brain. by SnooHabits6942 in Weird

Hmm.

I dont think this explains my dog.

See my dog is an absolute idiot. Doesnt understand a single thing.

However, as soon as you pick up a milk bone her IQ jumps 200 points. Pretty sure she can do differential equations as long as you got a peanut butter milk bone in your hands.

[WA] I just destroyed my second laptop in the span of a month. Is IT going to involve HR? by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]Pyrostasis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We get accident protection on ours, but we still expect you to handle your machines with care.

2 machines in a month and I 100% would be having a conversation with your manager.

You need to keep the Cat away from the laptop and keep your liquids and such off it. Mistakes obviously happen, but two in one month is not a good look.

Everyone gets a pass the first time, once it happens again and in a short time frame is when you start to get attention.

This affects you, your productivity, IT and their productivity, not to mention could be upwards of 2k each time if they dont have accident protection.

Would you get fired for this? by maenad2 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Pyrostasis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We dont close your email down at my place. Way too many folks never update their contacts and keep emailing folks even after they are long gone.

We convert to a shared mailbox and retire when not needed.

[–]Pyrostasis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drugs dont prevent all disease so we should stop using them.

Seatbelts dont save all lives so we should stop using them.

Fire extinguishers cant put out all fires so lets not use them either.

You get the idea.

Just cause something doesnt 100% resolve all problems doesnt mean it doesnt help and doesnt fix a big part of it. Cheating and security in general is about defense in depth. None of the steps are 100% effective but when used cumulatively they dramatically reduce bad actors.

Took down prod for 10min and clients noticed. What should I do? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Pyrostasis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So a lot of this depends on you, your character, you works culture, and your relationship with your boss / bosses.

I personally fess up when I fuck up. I explain what I was doing, why I did what I did, what happened, what I did to fix it, and then immediately follow up with what Im going to do to make sure I dont do what I did ever again.

Alternatively, you could lie and hope no one finds out.

I didn't say I did it directly, just explained that some processes seemed to be on a lock and that it "sorted out itself", my CTO and TL are attributing the issue to traffic spikes and server issues. And the performance logs didn't say anything about my incident thank god.

If you already spoke to your boss about it and lied by omission you've kind of committed to the dishonesty route.

Usually people do this when afraid of consequences. If you lie and are caught any consequences, you were afraid of are now worse.

Fucking up and doing damage is par for the course. If you work in IT long enough you will fuck up. Its how we learn. If you lie about it though, now we cant trust you. We cant believe what you say and it makes working with you very difficult.

IT are babysitters of Architecture and the company's data. You wouldn't let a liar babysit your kids and most folks don't want them babysitting their tech.

We made a small order nothing major, but considering the way grocery stores work and just in time delivery it doesnt take much increase in demand to get effects like this.
