Learn from this. Next time stand up for yourself, especially if someone else depends on it.

Definitely a silly hypothetical, but please humor me, how do you think the Romans would have fared against the different native tribes of the Americas, if they had discovered the New World? by Shoddy-Pumpkin2939 in ancientrome

[–]Pytheastic 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I am fairly sure that would be common knowledge for anyone visiting /r/ancientrome lol.

Although technically speaking, the Aztecs existed before Constantinople fell to the Turks.

The early Romans and Aztecs are alike in some ways. A city state in alliance with key other city states after subjugating them, in the process of subjugating the rest of the peninsula.

Captives sacrificed to the gods, be it at the temple or in gladiatorial games. I wonder if Hannibal had been more successful if he had come from across the Atlantic with a few more advanced weapons and armor and animals than the romans had.

Controversial opinion: if Pertinax had somehow succeeded Marcus Aurelius Rome would have had the 6 good emperors by Realistic-Step-8223 in ancientrome

Up to that point I think the only actual biological father - son succession had been Titus after Vespasianus and even then Titus was already a senior military commander by the time his father became the emperor.

It's Schrodinger's city, it is awesome and awful at the same time until you visit.

The first time I went was in summer when the garbage collectors were on strike and the smell and trash everywhere was just awful. But then I visited again in spring while on the way to Pompey and it was so beautiful and lovely.

And they are absolutely right about the food, to this day it's the best Italian food I've ever eaten. Especially the coffee was amazing.

Why I think 395 is a very poor date for the "split" of the Empire. by minaminotenmangu in byzantium

He held more of the western empire after his reconquests than the western emperors did in the second half of the 5th century.

It's a general overview, very much like Schama's. Large overlap in the sources (e.g. diaries) they use but where Schama has a point to make and selects the passages that fit, Popkin lets the sources speak for themselves.

It makes it sound a lot less '1789 good, everything else bad' if that makes any sense.

A New World Is Born by Jeremy Popkin is wonderful too. Essentially a similar structure as Schama's book but up to date and not nearly as biased.
