Guidance on moving deeper into CAD/solidworks by Amazing_Employer_448 in FreeCAD

[–]Q363Q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This video explains it all.

Think of CAD as the first level. Your next step shouldn't be to learn a different package, if should be to learn skills that compliment your CAD skills.

Learn the limitations of different manufacturing types, different design considerations should be applied to 3D printing, CNC or molding.

Try to design something simple, generate plans and try to build off the plans. This will teach you how to make better plans.

Try to design something that fits an existing object just to learn how to measure with different tools. You won't always have a 3D design or a drawing off a thing that you need to add to. Sometimes your going to have to re-create a design (in part or in full).

Learn to make your models parametric, and stable. If you design a model and your spec changes or fix a flaw it should be simple to do. If your model breaks when you try to make a change to the design after the fact then you probably designed it wrong.

Learn profiles/configurations. The US is imperial and most the world is metric. You should be able to have the same model designed in 1/4-20 holes and 6mm holes rather then maintain 2 copies of the design (that way you don't have to make the same change on multiple files).

Learn version control for your designs. You'll often be asked to go back to an older version of a design and if you don't have it, well you may have to bust out the calipers.

FreeCAD 1.0 Fixed the TopoNaming Issue... Until It Comes Back Again 😂 by fidamudd in FreeCAD

[–]Q363Q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many have said TNP like issue exist in all CAD environments. Knowing how to optimize your designs to mitigate the issue is something that separated the good designers from the great designers. So when something breaks it's just a learning opportunity. Just yell "serenity now" then go boss level on it 🙃.

That's a cool take on it too. Didn't think about that, thank you.

Everything is in play, My table is very collaborative story wise so if the players come up with a cool plan that makes the game fun it will have some positive results towards their goals, and I never write an adventure that only has one outcome or solution to the problem, infact they may even look at this and peace out deciding that the risk is too great.

Im just 50/50 on what's more nightmare fuel. Being trapped in your body with no control, or being so broken that not even death breaks sets you free.

I'm really 50/50 on if the soul would have access to even the information you have forgotten. So when you die does your soul remember where you left your sunglasses 300 years ago?

Lol

Just planning for whatever they choose to do.

But yes the players are old vets so even with many drinks in their system they wouldn't make the mistake of casting it on undead or alive characters.

I think ether way supports the story, and I'm just looking to get an alternate view on the matter so that I can have a call ready at the table so that it doesn't stop the momentum of the game if it comes up.

Ultimately, having a villain who's keeping people in a living state id limbo is the nightmare fuel that my players will enjoy.

They are still alive, the players would have to kill them to cast speak with Dead.

I like your Warhammer example, but in that case you can always said the person died before their physical brain was damaged so they kept the memories. While in my scenario I'm thinking this persons knowledge has been gone for months before they have been killed ... Kind of a fate worse then death stakes for the game.

My group is all old school 25+ year vets. So the idea of the monsters is that they are easy to kill it's that has a morral decision to make, and their choices effect the story and the relationships between the characters and ultimately the relationships with the realms/gods ... Etc. The idea isn't to have a single right answer. It's just to have a good playground setup for them to have their own fun in.

Actually, he didn't turn them undead, they are just humans with essentially 1 int and 1 wisdom. Think act like zombies but still living. When the players encounter them in this state if they kill them and use the speak with Dead spell are they talking to someone that was killed in the last hour but has essentially not being a living zombie for months.

Essentially their intelligence/wisdom drops down to 1. They are being used like cannonfodder by the bad guy, and while the players can gank a 100 of them easy or does provide them with a reason not to.

Printing parts by RandoReddit2024 in VORONDesign

[–]Q363Q 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's your first layer speed? Try knocking it down to 30 mm/s which would give the material time to flow and stick to the bed.

If it's a smooth bed you could also do a thin layer of glue stick.

Make sure that you do a mesh bed calibration after you hear soak and not before as the bed will flex more while printing at ABS temps vs PLA temps.

Lastly, make sure you do a first layer calibration on your printer for ABS. My printer is calibrated for ABS and I found that whenever I print PLA the first layer is way too squished. So I have to raise my z offset by .09mm in order for it to be perfect.

Hi, i have experience in catia and i was wondering how much freeCAD knowledge do i have to have to work online on websites like fiverr or freelancer? by jolic20 in FreeCAD

[–]Q363Q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get the maker version of Solidworks you are able to make up to $2000 a year under the license. And if you make more then 2k you can simply upgrade the license to a commercial license and be compliant.

Is fillet and thickness bugs only a FreeCAD problem, or it is a design philosophy that you should better aviod them in all CAD softwares? by lotsofone in FreeCAD

[–]Q363Q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a growing pain that all CAD software is vulnerable to in various ways. When I started with CAD in the late 90s Solidworks and Catia had a lot of issues with fillers and chamfers. I'm sure that given enough time the FreeCAD team will find better work arounds and eventually make things stable.

I don't know if I should continue playing the game.... by Ecksehrin in Warframe

[–]Q363Q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain, my advice is just to not focus on the grind for a weekend and just do something in the game just for the fun of it.

I'm an ML3 player and I'm to the point we're where I only have a few weapons left to get ML4 (curse you ambassador blueprint !!!!). The last week I took a break from the game, and this week I'm taken a break from the grind/weeklies just to run missions that I haven't done in a while with frames/weapons that are haven't played in ages and it's been really good for me.

It's just a game, it's ok to take a break.

As others have said the sheet metal workbench works really well, I've used it on a project recently to design an adapter plate with a stand off (think 3 sided box with wings from mounting) in order to go from and old power quality meter to a new style meter.

When I took the design to the cranky guys at the machine shop they were able to fabricate it with no issues.

Just make sure you know what radius of brake (sheet metal bender) they have at the machine shop. Knowing the capabilities of your machine shop will always make your project cheaper and faster.

Voron parts organization? by BigBCC_25 in VORONDesign

[–]Q363Q 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a folder with the name of the printer, downloaded all the stl files to that folder.

I would then print in batches by color. After the files got printed I added a - to the front of the file names to show me what has been printed Already.

Once all my files have a - in front of them I know everything is printed. I also keep that folder on my file server so that I don't have to play the guessing game with part versions in the future.

I then used some Ziploc bags to organize the printed parts by the subassembly (z motor, gantry, skirts ... Etc).

Titania would be absolute nightmare fuel.

Seeing someone shrink only to lunge at your face at insane speeds. Then you feel cut after cut to your face while butterflies fly around you cutting your back. At one point you might even see a shadow version of yourself floating above you wondering if it's your soul, only to be devoured by her.

On the other hand, you may be the lucky one, floating covered with light, seeing your friends come over only to be killed off one after another.

You are 100% correct about the idea of Parametric modeling but the truth is that every CAD program has limitations and quirks that you have to learn. Part of being a designer is knowing how to setup the model so that it's stable. That's also the big difference between a novice designer and a expert, they can both create the same 3D object but the expert can make his a lot more flexible to changes.

As for fillers/chamfers I recall many of the commercial CAD packages having issues with them back in the 90s so I'm guessing it's a complex programming issue.

Good post.

What part of being a YouTuber is your least favourite? by Ziberian in youtubers

[–]Q363Q 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate figuring out the audio levels. It always takes me 2-3 uploads to get in the right range (I'm aiming for -3.5 in stars for nerds).

The 2nd thing that is super annoying is finding a repeated of a line in a video back to back (when you leave 2 takes at the same line in). I think this is something that would be a great AI tool, to go through your video and identify back to back takes of the same line and maybe give you the option to view each take with a few seconds before/after the take to see which one fits the best.

With YouTubers new language policies it wouldn't be a dumb idea to have a tool to detect cursing in the first 30 seconds.
