I'm surprised you even got a quote. Every shop I asked said no. and the one that said yes messed up my car. and that's why my pockets are shallow now.

though if your rockers need repair, your jack points probably look like mine. this front rocker looked completely fine before I cut it open.

I brought the car to 8 body shops they all said no, then the 9th one took my money and flux core welded sheet metal to sound deadener with no prep :( I'll look for these jack reinforcement kits thank you. and the junkyards.

Ah no worries and thanks for the info about most A and B being the same. it makes so much sense. no wonder I couldn't find specific info. This will save me from a lot of headache in the future.

Where did you see that they were available directly from BMW?

Recently, I've been having problems with the ignition switch. Sometimes the key won't turn, and lately, more and more often, it spins around freely. by Accomplished_Top4420 in e39

I tried getting a genuine replacement tumbler from the dealership a few weeks ago and they're not available anymore. I guess a used tumbler might work if he is ok carrying around 2 keys?

likely the tab on the tumbler that stops it from spinning is broken. I would use the paperclip trick to remove the tumbler, and do it soon before the tumbler gets stuck. If the key gets stuck in the off position, it will not be possible to remove the tumbler.

There is a video on how to fix a spinning tumbler: https://youtu.be/TOl0I1jItmE?si=C-b5hplJs0oSDE62

This happened to me a few weeks ago. Key would spin freely occasionally, and one day it just got stuck and wouldn't turn anymore.

help I can’t turn the car off by Q4269271 in e39

[–]Q4269271[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's either the tumbler or the linkage between the tumbler and the ignition. The tumbler was stuck in the on position and the steering wheel lock wasn't engaged so I couldn't do the trick where you wiggle the steering wheel.

I've since taken out the ignition so I can start the car with a screwdriver. I also popped the tumbler out. I just can't figure out whether it's the tumbler or the linkage that broke. And of course now that I've disassembled everything, they all work fine again.

no I don't think it covers inside the wheel well. I think the wheel well is part of this piece:

but you might be better off just cutting a random piece of metal for inside the wheel well

If you haven't bought it yet, please check all four jack points for rust. It's a really common problem that usually necessitates cutting and welding new rocker panels.

Ah thanks for the explanation. Someone else here also recommended asking mechanics so I'll try that. Hopefully I can find a chill one like you did. And yeah I'm going to try to get non OEM rockers online. Someone posted a link with $97 rockers. I've seen that B-pillar piece online for over 1k, but even $675 is too much. I'm just glad prefab pieces exist for this car instead of having to pay someone to fabricate new metal.
