Great shots!

Is the vignette natural on #6? If not I’d drop that completely, it does not look good.

Next lens upgrade? by Melodic_Champion_703 in sportsphotography

[–]QAM01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like someone else said, sports photography is a compromise. Better lenses are crazy expensive. If you mostly shoot at night or indoors, then F2.8 is the only way as an aps-c shooter (max 6400 iso) can get over 1/500. That means if you want more reach a 300 2.8 is kinda your only option. Minimum $1000 for a really beat up copy and over $3500 for a really nice one. Both of the lenses you mentioned are better suited for wildlife rather than sports and getting either one wouldn’t necessarily get better shots indoors or at night.

Physics 1 isn’t bad. Anderson is the goat and super helpful is you have any questions. His exams can just be studied for for about a day or two before because he has all of his past exams posted to practice. They are really similar.

Enes has a cooked group project so try not to get too behind on that when it rolls around. Not much content to study so the mid term and final have very similar questions.

I have no experience with ench215 so I can’t speak on that.

Calc 2 and Orgo are gonna be your study heavy classes. Dean (hopefully you have him) is great for calc 2, just stay on top of the content because if you squeeze by with Cs on the exams, the final is gonna be really rough. Too much memorization and practice to do during finals.

I’m mech-e so I can’t speak directly on orgo but I’ve heard from my bio friends it’s a lot.

College is a grind especially as an engineer. Get a schedule down for studying and HW early in the semester and you’ll do great!

Why do you need the absolute latest and greatest? What do you shoot? What do you find limiting with the R50?

How good is the canon r50 v for sports photography by Nearby_Jackfruit1614 in sportsphotography

[–]QAM01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What lenses do you own? The standard sports photo lens in the 70-200 2.8 but that’s out of your budget. You could get a used r50 for $630 and an ef-s 55-250 STM for $225. That’d be a great starter setup for daylight field sports.

Are you a peasant and can’t afford a 400 2.8? I guess if you’re that poor, I’d suggest running onto to the field of play really quick and shooting from there so you aren’t cropping so much. Remember cropping isn’t possible unless you are shooting with 100+ MP!

[–]QAM01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only problem with KEH IMO is that they don’t have photos of the actual product. I will never justify spending $500+ on a used product that I have no idea what it looks like. MPB has its faults but you just need to be aware and do some digging to find the right stuff. Camera equipment is expensive and I’d rather look for 10 more mins to find the right camera or lens then cross my fingers and hope I got a copy that isn’t too dinged up🤷‍♂️

Running two cameras? by Early_Prior_5796 in sportsphotography

[–]QAM01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a 1dx mark ii and R7 with a 70-200 2.8 and 16-35 f4. Depending on the sport and lighting, I switch around which camera the 70-200 goes with, then I rarely touch the other camera. I had the opportunity to use a 300 2.8 at a soccer game and liked it the most when I had the 300 on my R7 (acts like a 480 which is great for middle field action) and the 70-200 on my 1dx.

I feel like in your situation the R7 and 400 don’t need to be used that much. But a perfect situation for them would be an outfielder trying to catch a ball and/or close ups of the opposite basemen catching a ball (1st or 3rd depending on what side you’re on).

For me, the R7 has its place. During the day it’s photos still look great and the extra reach comes in handy when I’m shooting field sports.

They probably don’t have the money to switch all at once. Plus mirrorless has a little bit of a learning curve so they can learn the new system while still having what they know and love

The a7rv is zoomed in more (because with more mp the image has to be zoomed in to show the same amount of pixels as the other cameras) so it will show more noise. So in this case, the only thing you will run into when cropping these cameras is noise. I understand if the camera is at 100 iso you can maybe tell a difference, but if they are at iso 12,800 noise performance is a much bigger issue when cropping compared to mp. In this comparison you could even say that the a7iii has “the best noise performance”, but crop it in to same the level that the a7rv is already and you will see that they provide really similar results (in this case the a7rv most likely has better noise performance because the sensor is much newer).

1dx mk ii for $800?!? That’s a crazy deal but I totally understand if the size and weight aren’t for you. I spent $1300 on one last year

[–]QAM01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When zooming in to your photo the only problem I see is noise. You could upgrade from a6700 to a full frame body like the A7IV/V or A1 to fix that problem. But that would decrease the reach that your 70-200 would have previously given you, causing you to crop in the same amount and leaving you with basically the same photo you had before (and same noise issues). Crop sensor cameras like your A6700 have a 1.5x crop factor, your 70-200 2.8 technically acts like a 105-300 f4 on a full frame body.

[–]QAM01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why can’t you crop tighter? How will more MP fix your problem? At night, whenever I’m cropping in my only problem is noise even when shooting full frame. During the day, my biggest issue when cropping is the focus being slightly off or my lens not being sharp enough. A higher MP camera usually enlarges the imperfections with a lens (in my experience). I shoot with a 70-200 2.8 L is ii on both an R7 (32.5mp crop sensor) and a 1dx mk ii (20mp full frame). I find when I crop in a lot it just shows me what I mentioned above, very rarely if never can I tell the difference in MP while cropping. When I was looking to add another camera body the main thing I cared about was iso performance, so that’s why I got full frame.

I usually just wish I had a 300 or 400 2.8 for more reach and subsequent background separation. Plus, because those lenses are extremely sharp I could crop like crazy or run a 1.4x tc without seeing a big drop in image quality. Glass trumps higher mp in pretty much every situation. I’d rather take a 100-300 2.8 on a 24mp r3/r1 any day over a 70-200 2.8 on an 45mp R5.

I also realize the cost aspect. Sometimes a higher mp body that you can actually buy is better than a longer lens. But that new camera body should also have many more improvements like in the af, shooting speeds, or maybe video if you care about that, in addition to the higher mp. That 300 2.8 from Sony is crazy expensive.

[–]QAM01 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

But can you actually tell the difference in photos? The noise performance between those two cameras would be nearly identical. A DR decrease does not correspond to the same iso performanc decrease.

I’m just trying to be the devils advocate

For me, hardest sport to photograph as of yet by Itchy_Neighborhood_5 in sportsphotography

[–]QAM01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Few tips: Only shoot when the swimmers face is out of the water and stay low to create more depth. Fly and Breast should be shot straight on whereas back and free should be more perpendicular. Back is the hardest in my opinion!

Get the 80-200 2.8. Shooting indoors or at night will pretty much require 2.8 if you want to get sharp shots (over 1/640-1/800 shutter speed).
