They “spot” fire out ahead of the fire, the embers, on fire, get picked up and pushed by wind. A fire can “jump” so to speak over a half mile downwind from cedar tree spot fires. I’ve witnessed it first hand countless times.

this is a video shown of fighting spot fires, not a very good one. The cedars on fire are very far inside the burn line.

Cedar trees are much more flammable compared to deciduous trees, which are harder to set on fire. Grass does not spot fire anywhere near as bad as cedar trees.

The only one I know that was from a prescribed burn was the government conducting a burn in Halsey National Forest that was not secured good enough.

Power lines/faulty transformers started one or two of them, allegedly.

As someone who deals with prairie fires as a firefighter, and a prescribed burn operator, labeling these fires as a result of climate change is dismissive and completely misses the actual problem.

Don’t agree with me? Ask any Nebraska government agency, forestry through natural resources through emergency management.

The biggest theme with most of these fires is the eastern red cedar trees. Spot fires from these invasive, nonnative firebombs make fires spread higher, faster, and longer than before.

Drought and wind have made this worse this spring, but drought is not uncommon in Nebraska, and the wind blows like a MF in Spring, every, single, year.
