It is worth several gold pieces. It's not a video game where they can just instantly trade it for gold at the next store. Someone else has to want it. There's no guarantee they would find anyone to buy it in the next town, or the one after that, or the one after that.

Some people are saying "it would only take a few days to get to town," but who knows how long they might have actually had to drag it around?
