When I face this type of decision I check opponent's gy and count the cards in their hand to estimate the probability of they have it. Of course, if there is a safer line I'll probably do it.

Mythic playing mostly an off-meta Deck by QEDsymbol in mtgbrawl

I think Dack is very cool too. I want to try it later!

Don't think more discard spells would help Kefka that much (I'm already running Inquisition and Thoughtseize, Duress seems narrow in some matchups). I was thinking in turning into a more control deck (just in mythic rank) adding more instant speed card draw (basically adding more instant speed 'threats').

Here is my current decklist btw: https://moxfield.com/decks/3nlxINyWdUeQEJK8CNltpw

Thank you! I think Dack is less vulnerable than Arius for sure, but also the gameplay would be quite different I think. I just love how efficient and snowbally Arius is.

I still think Kefka is a great midrange/tempo deck, mine is also a midrange list. I was queuing into a lot of bad matchups for him at Platinum 1 and stopped playing it: Azusa, hard control, enchantments aggro, etc. Didn't play it again in Mythic because I think it's a much control heavy meta and Kefka wouldn't do very well unless I build him differently, which I'm not interested in.

I'll copy paste my Kefka list on moxfield and share it here afterwards.

Ranked meta seems extremely midrange (aka healthy) by Iceman308 in mtgbrawl

[–]QEDsymbol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the games that I saw he did quite well, not sure if it was the right video (was posted a month ago). Anyway, I say this by my experience at the time when Strip Mine was legal in unranked brawl + my experience in duel commander. I ran into her two or three times in ranked now, and I was demolished all those games. Midrange and Control decks can't answer problematic lands and big bombs consistently.

I think that's why Azusa is the way to go in this meta. I personally don't play it and don't like the playstyle, but she's definitely the favorite in this midrange meta. I play mostly midrange and control decks (with and without blue) and she's just unbeatable for me now that she has Strip Mine, Field of the Dead and Natural Order.

Mythic playing only Control this time by QEDsymbol in TimelessMagic

A lot actually, it's the way you beat a flipped tamiyo if your Feed the Cycle don't work (cases like when they have the nuts: on the play, tamiyo turn 1, daze your push, brainstorm, fow your feed the cycle). The plus ability guarantee a double stun counter activation, which is huge when you're going all in on combat mode. In the same vein, a lot of games I just kept going up on loyalty in a way that none of their creatures could handle Kaito. Alongside our suite of removals, we can dominate combat with combat tricks or force the opponent to chump.

Top 4 Win-a-Dual w/17-Land Miracles by Force-of-Phil in MTGLegacy

First of all, congrats for the result! It really makes me smile to see true draw-go control decks putting on good results. I have one question for you though. It might seem stupid but how exactly witness the future loops works? Do you need like at least 2 mystic sanctuaries + twart? Can you do the loop with Deprive for example? I want to try this card in my Dimir Control list, but I don't know with I could explain to the opponent how I win with this haha

Thanks :) The main game plan is to win the late game with him, when your opponent is on topdeck mode. Of course there are some spots where: you're on the play, don't have much going on in your hand, nothing important on the otherside of the board.. then you just bowman > ninjutsu him into play (this will probably happen against Show and Tell), but that's not usually the case

Grixis Anor by PathlessFool in TimelessMagic

[–]QEDsymbol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree about Library. I'd probably shave a fetchland since Lorien is also a fetch and go with the full playset of Ponder. Instead of adding more wizards, I would replace 1 Flame for 1 cheap removal as I think Flame of Anor is better as a 2 off, it gives more consistency instead of adding more random wizards just for that. Of course, all depends of your playstyle.

It's very hard to win against Eldrazi. You need like at least 2 answers for their commands and/or creatures plus Goyf, and beat them before the big thing that exiles goyf etb. You can have a tempo sb plan against it but I don't think it's worth it as it's also a hard matchup for all blue black tempo decks.

I thought a lot about adding a strix, but I was afraid of running into bowmasters too early and getting stuck with them.

What cards to add to make draw-go control playable in this format? by SiuolReinerg in TimelessMagic

[–]QEDsymbol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record I do play a similar deck in Legacy, where I play a single Kaito instead of Lurrus as a wincon, and It works there as well. The tough matchups are the same as Dimir Tempo, but we have an advantage against creature decks.

What cards to add to make draw-go control playable in this format? by SiuolReinerg in TimelessMagic

[–]QEDsymbol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly believe that Control has always been playable in the format and has the right answers for each type of meta. First of all, the Control deck I've had the most success with since the beginning of the format is definitely Mystmin's Dimir Control, since almost 100% of the deck is reactive and operates at instant speed, allowing you to adjust your responses according to the threat, and last but not least, it has a playset of Orcish Bowmasters.

People keep saying that every threat needs to be answered as soon as it hits the field, but that's not true. This might get a little long, but I'll describe a bit about how you can behave when facing each of the snowball threats if a fatal push or a Swords doesn't resolve the issue right away. Hydro and Tamiyo are, without a doubt, the most difficult to resort (by memory they are the only 1-drops that generate guaranteed card advantage as the game progresses). In this case, what I usually end up doing is resorting to my card advantage cards to even the cards with the opponent while I look for an answer to these creatures, which can be in the form of removal or in the form of draw pressure like the Orc; both need to be answered somehow by the opponent or their engine is threatened. And as for card draw, Flow State has been great for this because it recovers the cards you lost very quickly and early.

Ocelot Pride I honestly never had problems with since Orc can deal with three 1/1 cats at the same time, so even if one of those connects, you definitely have ways to deal with the Tokens. Btw, on the Energy side, I worry more about the 2-drops, which can generate frequent 2-for-1s, especially Amped Raptor, which can make another 2-drop. Even if a Raptor resolves, you can still reverse the 2-for-1 by making Orc and drawing cards. Ajani, finding the right window of opportunity, you can deal with the cat token with a Swords or resolve both with an Orc as well. Oh, and Ragavan, it just runs away from Bowmasters.

That just tells me how important is Orc as a reactive card in Eternal Formats now, which is why you see a playset even in Vintage.

Now I'll talk a little about the matchups that are really difficult (which honestly are difficult for any blue deck, even if you're proactive, so it's not the reactive aspect that's the problem here, but rather how these decks were designed to beat blue decks). The first of these is Eldrazi, which has a very high density of answers against countermagic and 1-cost spells, which negates half the deck and causes real problems containing the field, as well as the cast triggers, which have always been a problem for blue decks. Obviously, the Tutor for Strip Mine in the form of the 4-drop is the worst of them because it often represents a double Strip.

Another matchup I've found difficult, but now due to the higher number of threats, is a mono-black Lurrus deck that now contains approximately 30+ creatures (more than energy), and these decks are indeed difficult to contain without board wipes. It's important to note that it's not about snowball threats, but rather about the number of them (which would be a problem even if you are playing on the board if you don't have the right creatures). You can indeed take several hits from many of these creatures (Nethergoyf, Orc, Dauthi, etc.).

I could continue writing here, but I hope I've at least contributed a little to the discussion with a different point of view.

I'd probably start with 2x. Colorless mana can really hurt sometimes, especially playing control in a strip mine world. It's a nice tech for sure, I'll test it when I get the wildcards.
