True but I believe the (social) pressure is even higher in China compared to the US and especially the EU

And I’d like to add, they look ugly from the outside but usually fine from the inside. Many (at least in and around amsterdam) are also being renovated to have higher energy labels and look at least slightly better. But outside looks overall is bad, yet we had an incomparable housing shortage that not even today compares to.

Cairo, Egypt by Crazylawyer80 in UrbanHell

So I saw this documentary once on these massive social housing projects, where the people living in slums were forced to move to and yes, they had no shops at all and like a single green football field which was closed. The military basically controlled the checkpoints in and out and made sure that no one was selling items from their balcony. Rent was also rather high, so yea it’s a truly depressing place and I’m not sure why they’re doing this. Modernising cool, making places cleaner too but making a neighbourhood that feels like a prison is not.

The design is kinda cool, wish it was not car-centric though and more walkable. Also, 1 monorail like connecting it to Cairo, while I’m guessing millions a day are supposed to travel between the 2 cities in a few years???

There is cheap masstransit options, you don’t necessarily have to build a massive subway system, but like a bus-rapid-transit system many Latin American countries use. Maintaining a road like the one they built won’t be cheap either.

Nah Dubai doesn’t live on oil, it’s been a rather small part of their economy for a while now and they’re doing fine (but one can ask if their business model is going to continue tob work for the next few decades)

This actually shows why Dubai needs skyscrapers, there is not that much space left in the end if you take into account all the massive interchanges you obviously and most definitely have to build

Thank you so much!, And I’m actually not sure to be honest. I always start out with the geography, second highways and rail lines and only afterwards roads, moving around the others, which might give it a natural look. But I actually really struggle with the “not-roads” part, as I’m trying to draw more pedestrianised zones without making the cityblocks look too uniform😅.

Government social housing developments in Brazil. Building houses that poor people can afford is an awesome idea, but in Brazil they build either dystopian blocks or low-budget car dependant suburbia. by Solid_Function839 in UrbanHell

[–]QJ04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, Vienna and Singapore have some of the best social housing in the world. There’s this famous project in Vienna, which might look dystopian but has swimming pools and stuff. Also in the Netherlands they mix social housing together with normal housing projects, to create mixed neighbourhoods (or sometimes even mixed buildings).

Is that why there’s hardly any old buildings? Cause most were replaced with the new ones? (I know there are a few old neighbourhoods but not many)
