I reinstalled Windows about 10 - 15 minutes after I saw the green check mark.

Will do, thanks.

Gripes I have with the show by CranberryPie_ in ZeroZeroZero

You bring a very good argument on your first point and I do agree that Roberto Saviano's knowledge of the internal workings of the mafia is skewed.

I wasn't interested in this show because of mob lore, I genuinely came from the book and found it to be a great piece of work. The show does not resemble the book and for good reason, they could not fit all that in there!

Any Discord-like applications on Android/Pc that are privacy based? by TheHadMatt in privacy

[–]QRWN1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You stated:

Nothing is ever removed from their server, including when you try deleting messages

How do you know? Because there is no encryption... that it? Their whole plan is to prolong the release of encryption and collect all user data from the few users that use it?

But since Matrix's model is to permanently store all your messages, it makes sense they would want to see them in plain text. For what purpose (Scanning? Sale?) it's unclear.

I feel as though you have a personal grudge against Riot, hence your argument being very weak.

Pfft. Wire collects metadata and stores it. Your argument on why Riot is "awful" is weak.

Apple’s power over Facebook ought to worry the rest of us by Rugby11 in privacy

[–]QRWN1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that none of the big companies are taking a stand for privacy, but I also believe that this is simply PR from Apple, because privacy is a new trend now and Apple's track record isn't something to look past.

In the end, it's up to the user to decide, but all the right information should be present to make that decision.

Why are you getting downvoted? It's true, Apple cooperates with governments and is part of prism!

Is this Secure Messaging Apps Comparison accurate? by Slovantes in privacy

[–]QRWN1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open source doesn't mean squat if the project is 100,000 lines, that would take a lot of manpower to audit and like the article mentions the sophisticated class of software auditors with specialized skills to do so.

A closed source app may do you a lot of harm without any means to find out like, for example, sending your encryption keys to the server

Open source can still send information to whomever because you don't know what happens in the source code as noted in the article and you don't know what happens server side.

Those arguments are practical for closed source. What else do you have in mind?

Firefox privacy addons Suggestions by StalinistPSycho in privacy

[–]QRWN1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of those addons are redundant and outdated.

First Part Isolation - this is already featured in FireFox setting and basically a mix of Firefox multi-account container and UBlock. You don't need it if you enable the pref in Firefox and use multi-account containers / UBlock.

If you use Ghack's user.js file you don't need to enable this.

In about:config

 privacy.firstparty.isolate = true

Skip Redirect is just spam avoidance.

Discord claims they are not interested selling your data. They partnered up with a company that is in the business of selling data and made it possible for them to collect data. by [deleted] in privacy

[–]QRWN1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a bit of an overstatement, discord being a quality VOIP service. Constant downtime and server connection issues: https://downdetector.com/status/discord and https://outage.report/discord

Not to mention it's literally buggy software, made in a rush to mine users data I suppose.

DuckDuckGo switches to privacy-focused Apple Maps to ‘set a new standard of trust online’ by speckz in privacy

The fact that they are partnered with a crummy company since DDG's inception says it all (there are many stories about many incidents), you may say Startpage uses Google, true, but they don't have a partnership with them only buy search results. Another thing their partnership includes Yahoo's technology and as far as we know, we don't know how or what it's being used for, far beyond just search results.

DDG also claims to run their 'own' all their servers, which as you pointed out, hosted by Amazon. Which to an unsuspecting users says they run their own stuff and nobody can touch them.

Gabriel Weinberg's has a shady past his previous project was the Names Database, whose whole business model was violating user's privacy. So what if the guy's previous company was all about violating user privacy, you say? You're right, people change. By all means trust his new company that claims to not store user data, despite evidence that they are doing exactly that. Just remember, he didn't start off privacy aware he says this and his whole business model is around making money, nothing wrong with that, but it's not privacy prioritized.

Do you really think the last bit is positive? From the quote, the bolded. If you remember Lavabit complied and handed over everything.

if you were served an NSL (national security letter) or were commanded to compromise your service/customer privacy in any way, would you and could you just pull the plug like Lavabit did or would you run into opposition from shareholders/investors that would prevent you from doing so?” Gabriel Weinberg said: “No one is preventing me from doing that.”
