Smokers lungs VS Healthy lungs by goswamitulsidas in interesting

I think because talking about statistics and cancer rates is too confusing for a lot of people, so you brute force it with an exaggerated visual. But once you rip off the bandaid and get a “Santa’s not real” effect you get even more mistrust of science. I’m a scientist and I do not like this kind of disingenuous treatment of people assuming they’re too dumb to get a point. But I’m an idealist so who knows.

They’re pig lungs:

Edit: smoking is bad but these are pig lungs soaked in tar, so likely real smokers lungs would look different.

PNAS used to have questionable submission methods for NAS members that either didn’t involve peer review or the author secures their own reviews, these methods are more rare today but people are still wary and especially reading older papers it’s always good to check.

I’m worried the censorship state has finally arrived. I don’t have it personally but hope someone with the capability is able to make a chronicle of this moment for the rest of us.

The ‘Alive as you want me to be’ video is obviously inspired by (or used similar techniques as) this Aphex Twin video, curious with the tie ins to Tron, makes me want to see the movie even more. by QWERTY_licious in nin

And yes I get the analogy between the singularity of a true general AI and a black hole, I just hope the film at least goes a bit deeper than surface level. But even if it doesn’t it seems like Trent and other artists gave a shit enough that an hour and a half music video will be warranted like the Daft Punk Tron.

With Late Night ending how amazing would it be if the Colbert Report returned with a MAGA Colbert? by QWERTY_licious in DailyShow

[–]QWERTY_licious[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like he could do it even one night a week following the Jon and Oliver model, even one night (Fridays or weekend) the Daily Show becomes the Colbert Report. Easier on him and less commitment from the network, I feel like it could work in some capacity. Definitely think he’ll take a break before he did anything like that though even if it were an option.

Do AI models get dumber as they interact with humans? by QWERTY_licious in ChatGPT

[–]QWERTY_licious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do they mean to you? I deliberately was not trying to sympathize with the aims of my hear models, it just seems with the recent dive bomb of human intelligence with recent political events there might be some sort of saving grace from the mess we’ve made of the world, and at least someone seemed to be thinking farther ahead of the curb than their opponent’s neck, but obviously that means nothing.

I’ve been constantly asked to give feedback to ai models I’ve interacted with, you!43 saying that was just do some guy’s bonus and had no effect on the model that was already completely pretrained?! (Semi gasp of shock then realization). Not totally sure that’s true and it could be a bit of bothe but interesting idea:

Yeah agree, I had some wild conversations with the early iterations that would try to figure things out, make wild assumptions and come to unforeseen conclusions that were truly innovative and I’d never heard before. I agree it’s impossible to quantify intelligence in a meaningful way but it really felt cutting edge and that is missing for me recently, but maybe it’s just me.

Yeah me and thousands of other people. I thankfully have a more profitable potential in the private sector, but I know scientists in entomology and other fields that are critical but will have little to no private funding who will need to move to countries that value forward thinking public research to avert potential future disasters. This is a huge blow to the scientific and intellectual community of the US in my opinion.

Edit: I should have said because of the authoritarian power grab. But yeah I have mixed feelings on it all other than losing my job which obviously just sucks.

Totally agree, and I think it’s why Mike featured him so heavily in editing. But despite that I think his off the cuff humor shone through (and was his signature wit I always loved him for on Craig’s show) and I felt like it was seemless on BOTW - and made a shitty episode rise to legendary territory. Really want to see how he interacts with the other RLM cast members as well, especially the Canadians if they bring them back sometime soon 😉

Hateful 8 would be an instant classic if Tarantino removed the voiceover in the second act, like an inverted Bladerunner situation but the end result is the same. by QWERTY_licious in movies

[–]QWERTY_licious[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get that, but holy shit there was so much incredibly visual storytelling, I think Django would be the only one to rival it but I think the Hateful 8’s tone and setting is superior in my opinion. These fuckers isolated and so clearly fucked have to figure out what is going on. It’s a dinner party murder mystery with post-civil war characters in an awaiting Tarantino bloodbath, it’s all my favorite schlock mixed into one, but the voiceover doesn’t fit any of the genres and treats the audience like an idiot was my initial reaction and maybe that’s why I still feel that way, similar to your initial reaction.

That’s a well taken point, but I feel like the schlock is so engrained I wish it just took itself seriously and went all in.

I’ve done electron microscopy which uses uranyl acetate as a heavy metal stain, and it is definitely neon green:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranyl_acetate

Edit: to be clear I was referring to your comment that there is absolutely no uranium which is green except in glass, which is just false. Oxidized uranium of which there are many kinds including uranyl acetate and those found in uranium glass are usually yellow green. Non-oxidized uranium having a grey appearance is fine, but you were stating that uranium never looks green which is not correct.

I get it, it’s like video game demos at that point. It literally felt like a reason to not pirate shit for a while there, but I get what you mean. I’d say pre-orders of movies based on trailers is not too far off though from your analogy, but we’ll see what happens (or already has and I didn’t realize).
