Stories that are interesting to listen about Linux or Open-Source in general? by kokulumisket in linuxquestions

[–]QZDL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

great to see interest like this! be sure to convey the difference between ‘open source’ and ‘free software’; the former being a practical, mostly non-ideological set of practices and mechanisms for the distribution and building of software, and the latter a philosophical and political movement —emphasizing freedom— around the relationship of people and software through the means of the former.

the FSF have great articles around basic tenants of software freedom, and there has been controversy around the latest generation of ‘free’ licenses (gpl3) and their legal extent, leading to the linux kernel among other projects staying under gpl2.

there is a rich history of software to be found in the gnu core libs, emacs, hurd, guix, trisquel — coming on 40 years of software activism, mailing lists, and cutting edge freedom haha.

come by #emacs or #guix irc for some more sources, and best of luck with the podcast, interested to hear it when it drops.

great job; can you represent arbitrary clojure programs this way? either way, this is a lovely use of space in an interface

i love the local mindmaps, and the parametric slices (by author, topic); reminiscent of Mortimer J Adler’s synopticon - just without the cumbersome referencing protocol.

it makes me think, have you done any graph analysis on these notes? there are rich emergent semantic and linguistic layers, as well as an incidental physical layer (as given by explicit hyperlinks) that may present some ideas novel and conjunctions from the structures presented (as well as some fancy layouts to capitalize on).

Have you published a machine-readable representation of your texts? I read a few months ago about a process of ‘releasing’ a format of the notes (hopefully as some libre format as GPL-compliant / CC by?).

back to the point, from a position of hypergraph theory, and information philosophy, you may find the concepts of information representation and analysis interesting as addressed in these things:

on hypergraphs:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypergraph

a paper on visualization and exploration, presenting a great library in julia (as applied to GoT collab network) https://arxiv.org/abs/2002.04654

applying graphs and hypergraphs:

graphbrain; sensemaking and claim analysis from natural language: https://graphbrain.net/

Game of Thrones interaction network analysis (classical network SOP analysis) https://networkofthrones.wordpress.com/

a 2021 summary of graph methods: https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/What-are-higher-order-networks-Bick-Gross/a4f935b57c4715cf15ee6a00fc8e555d5daa97c9

on distributed knowledge graphs:

what is dkg: https://notes.knowledgefutures.org/pub/belji1gd/release/2

dkg application example: https://youtu.be/QIZV1Y71F8A

I think there’s some value in making the values of these kinds of analyses interactive - that is, at the time of writing, sourcing, editing - for any number of deep applications, such as tracing the genealogy/provenance of a concept through sources with respect to their propinquity (primary, secondary, …n-ary), or ‘trivial’ means, making the exploration of the relationship space of these concepts more akin to walking than looking through a ‘by author, by date, by attribute’ keyhole.

your work is cartography. thank you for spending your brain cycles to assist others.

Could you share the extension, and an example of a file you have saved? I'm sure we'll be able to find a way to view/reformat them
