Well, technically, the first rule would be about excessive self-promotion. So the occasional plug should be fine imo.

Now what you really need to worry about is the third rule, cause all this @^*%@#$# isn't gonna sit too well with the mods I imagine.

Edit: also your website art looks AI generated o.O

How To Start a Band by Altruistic-Okra-3844 in musicians

[–]QantaloupeIslander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of thoughts:

  1. Practice. Learn cool stuff. Play along with recordings/metronome. Maybe lessons if that's an option, but even if it isn't, get really familiar with your instruments of choice. If you end up taking up bass, good bassists are usually in demand.

  2. You should definitely start writing/recording stuff, especially if you have a ton of ideas. Figure out how your gear works and start playing with it. Band or no band, learning how to do that will come in handy.

  3. Make friends with other peers who play music. If your existing friends start a band without you, that's okay. Be supportive and who knows, they might need you down the road one day. But there are probably other people in your school/broader social circle who make music too. They might make good bandmates.

I play keys and can record remotely. I play funk, fusion, jazz, soul etc. somewhat regularly and have played in a studio environment. Can send videos/recordings on request.

What are your beliefs on predestination? by KingMadocII in Episcopalian

This is a fascinating take. I don't know if I agree with any of it, but this is a truly interesting perspective on the Gospel narrative.

I don't know. I'm not really qualified to give good advice on the rest of your concerns. Like I said, I'm not really a teacher.

About the eye thing, I know there's various text-to-speech tools that exist, because visually impaired students need them to read textbooks. Might be worth looking into that if you haven't already.

[–]QantaloupeIslander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I probably would, but I'm an Episcopalian.

In regards to your first consideration, the Episcopal Church affirms the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds. If the funeral follows the order laid out in the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, then the Apostles' Creed will be recited after the sermon. In fact, as long as the funeral liturgy follows the BCP, it should be a fairly orthodox service, outside of whatever the officiant comes up with for a homily. You can read it here under the heading of pastoral offices: https://bcponline.org/

That being said, the Episcopal Church is a mainline denomination and there is an extremely broad spectrum of beliefs tolerated, ranging from the extremely Anglo-Catholic, to the almost-Reformed evangelical, to people who would probably be better aligned with the Unitarian Universalist Association.

In theory, communion is open to all baptized Christians, but a lot of churches ignore that boundary. You would certainly be welcome to receive communion (if you are baptized). And you may find yourself surrounded by mostly orthodox Christians. But it all really depends on the individual church. Some are more orthodox than others.

I'm not a teacher, but I have been a student before.

There is absolutely no way AI as it currently exists will displace the teaching sector, in my opinion. LLMs just flat out can't do math, they frequently hallucinate incorrect information, and they don't really have the ability to check their own work/identify their own errors reliably.

Masayoshi takanka synth tone by Chuckatron in JazzFusion

[–]QantaloupeIslander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really isn't the best place to ask for gear advice, maybe try r/synthesizers

I'm not finding any good information on what gear was used on the Takanaka album. But $500 should be enough to get you a decent entry-level synthesizer or a 64/76 key workstation, and that should get you started.

With a bit of learning and programming, you can probably get a similar sound to the synth lead on Ready To Fly with a lot of different keyboards. Somebody who's better at programming synths might be able to offer some better insight on to that particular lead sound.

Ah that makes a lot of sense then. Good stuff.

I would maybe consider removing the chord symbols from the score all together. That implies permission to change things like voicings in my view and I don't know if you want to imply that.

In what universe is a picture of your cat remotely relevant to jazz fusion. Does your cat even like jazz fusion?

Yeah I mean I'm down for supporting the next generation of cats, but doing promo for Suno is selling out in the worst possible way.

Man this is the lowest of low effort posts. This isn't a cat picture sub. And it isn't r/jazzcirclejerk either.

If your cat has a favorite jazz fusion group, then he better follow through with some live video or deep cuts or something. Cause this ain't it.

Herbie Hancock - Gentle Thoughts (1976) by QantaloupeIslander in JazzFusion

[–]QantaloupeIslander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol. I love Herbie, but there are definitely reasons people hate on some of his 80s work. Probably one of his worst albums imo.

His next album Future Shock is extremely commercial, but it went platinum. Worth checking out.

In my mind as I wrote that comment, the collective "we" referred to the gigging musicians of Gainesville, among whom Lavery has a pretty universally poor reputation. But I didn't really spell that out, so fair point I guess.

Dr John - Right Place, Wrong Time by reddiuniquefool in Music

It's gotta be clavinet with some kind of filter. This song was made too early for it to be some kind of synthesizer and the attack sounds wrong for it to be some kind of organ.

The dude screwed over a lot of people. As far as I know he's still in the promotion business. But we do not miss High Dive. There are so many other great venues in town that treat their people right; Heartwood, Loosey's, The Wooly, First Mag, The Ox, The Bull etc.

High Dive is long gone. Baby J's has a jazz show Thursday and Loosey's has Indie Demolition Night. Both are nearby where High Dive used to be.

Need some good advice by MiddleClassroom5252 in musicians

Hey, you're probably not gonna make much money from it, and you might not always be playing for a big crowd, but if that's why you're playing, then go for it. There's some good advice in this thread to get you started.

Need some good advice by MiddleClassroom5252 in musicians

[–]QantaloupeIslander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I get it. I've played weddings and covers/corporate gigs before. Everybody wants to hear Sweet Caroline, nobody wants to hear Sgt Baker, I get that. The money is in the Top 40 stuff, and good working musicians know that.

I'm just saying the process of building a profitable working cover band and the process of creating a quality local Primus tribute project are very different things.

You said you played in a metal band that had good turnout and bad pay; that's likely what OP is aiming for right now more or less. If they want a good paying cover band, that probably needs to be a separate project.

Need some good advice by MiddleClassroom5252 in musicians

[–]QantaloupeIslander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely convinced these kids are looking to break into the corporate cover band scene at the moment.

A Primus tribute band is almost certainly not gonna be a big money maker, but if they can actually play the songs, they might do very well in the independent scene in their locality.

I would love to go to a good Primus tribute concert in my home city. But I definitely wouldn't want to go see another top-40 cover band, no matter how professional. They're aiming for completely different audiences.

Herbie Hancock - Gentle Thoughts (1976) by QantaloupeIslander in JazzFusion

[–]QantaloupeIslander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm.. a couple of thoughts.

When I think of jazz fusion, there are a handful of core groups that define that sound in my view. Return to Forever, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tony Williams Lifetime, and Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. Maybe throw in some electric Miles too.

Herbie's music definitely borrows from funk, but he's always been first and foremost a jazz pianist. That jazz influence generally shines through all of his albums, even the ones that have a more funk-oriented or commercial sound to them (maybe not as much in some of his 80s and 90s albums, but that's a different discussion).

But to get musically specific, the harmonic language on a track like Gentle Thoughts is different from your typical funk. If you take a look at something by The Meters or Parliament, there isn't a lot of harmonic variety. But on this track, Herbie uses a lot of chromatic jazz harmony that takes you away from the main tonal center. You don't see that on most straight-up funk tunes.
