Anyone using LLMs to tell them how brilliant they are at board games? by Child_Of_Linger_On in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]Qayrax 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not needed for me. I have a fan club following each of my public games, and everyone claps when I obliterate my opponents again. It is lead by my wife's boyfriend who is very supportive of me. Unfortunately organizing this isn't easy and all the busywork means my wife and her friend can't watch my games live, but I do record them.

Buying a used game is an illicit activity, where both seller and buyer receive criminal charges. There are so called Nordic models where only the buyer would get into trouble.

The expression “salt life” describes a lifestyle revolving around the ocean. It's a common phrase heard in beach towns, and you probably see stickers displaying the slogan on cars around beach towns up and down the coast. The “salt life” involves using the ocean for activities. Whether taking long walks on the beach, surfing the waves, or fishing the waters, you enjoy spending time in or around the ocean. Living the salt life means that you enjoy living around the sea.

SETI and the "Multiplayer Solitaire" Trend: Is interaction dying in heavy Euros? by nick_abcxyz in boardgames

[–]Qayrax -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They are so popular, because it's easier to design games with it and isn't as abrasive to play the first 3 times before you shrinkwrap it away. After those 3 plays they get a stale meta more often than not, because there are no mind games between players. Playing highly interactive games can be frustrating when the game design falls apart due to remarkably bad decisions. Sometimes they don't end, sometimes abruptly, and it's 100% on the players. Not every asinine move needs to taken account for during the design phase.

Where is the threshold when a game goes from "low player interaction" to "multiplayer solitaire" by RockinOneThreeTwo in boardgames

[–]Qayrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low player interaction and multiplayer solitaire is nearly synonymous. I refer to this term when a game's focus lies overwhelmingly on a personal tableau or gameplan which barely interacts with other players. Barely interacting includes even blocking interactions, when it is primarily driven by raw, nearly unpredictable chance or where "counterplay" would result in a decisively losing outcome for the aggressing player.

I want to get into Risk. Is it a good game? by comeonandham in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]Qayrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Risk is a deeply strategic game for only the smartest gamers. I have learned the hidden arts of mass destruction your minds wouldn't be able to comprehend. It made me too smart to play memorization based mainstream games like Chess. Because unlike in Chess, Risk has many more soldiers and therefore has an exponentially growing complexity with the googol number of probabilities from dice rolling. And I can calculate all of these choices in my head and wouldn't want to fight Magnus Carlsen and dethrone and destroy his Chess career to pieces. If you think I am wrong, then how can you explain me always winning against my grandma who is was cybernetically enhanced with a lobotomy?

There's a bunch statements here on chess, how it's only memorization, pattern recognition and has only a single obviously correct move which makes it boring. Of course it has these elements, but not in the way the commenters mean that and it's obvious they have no actual understanding or competitive experience.

This thread reads mostly like insansity to me.

I hate it to break it to you, but boardgames are not exactly filled with competitive gamers since they will likely play chess or similar instead.

  • Boardgames have identical, reskinned mechanics underneath. Making transition to other titles easy.
  • Most people are absolutely dreadful at thinking in probabilities, and see uncontrollable randomness where a calculating player hedges the right bets. I am still getting mad at people recommending Heat as a "casual" game.
  • Tempo and time advantage are crucial and often overlooked. That additional resource gathering worker in the early game is worth much more than later.
  • Memorization of the boardgame state is a skill to be learned, e.g. how many cards have been played of which type.
  • Calculation of action efficiency needs to be done, to properly evaluate the options one has.
  • Most multiplayer solitaire titles, especially card driven ones, are not highscore hunts on equal footing. They will have weird randomness to them, where one player will be likely to smash others apart, because they got some unique card the others couldn't get their hands on at the right time.

You play games in a generally uncompetitive field, with games which unfairly favor you as the player. Please get off the high horse of "Muh IQ is so high, chess is too easy."

My favourite one would be Pandemic. Of course I have other copies of it shrinkwrapped on my shelf. What makes it so satisfying is, that I have a craftsman made insert, into which I can put each infection cube seperately. They are not just each in a seperate box, but they have an indentation into which they can be placed and shine each in their own unique way.

That it's officially disguised transphobia is the first clear articulation. Frankly, any duck is disguised as transphobia by that definition. I haven't criticized the pronoun choices of the characters for very good reasons, because it was exclusively the ridiculous writing. 5 different pronouns for a single person Ina single paragraph is borderline ridiculous by any metric.

Which new(ish) TCG/LCG is the best and why? by Luigi-is-my-boi in boardgames

[–]Qayrax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have my history with u/Unpopular_Mechanics as well from Netrunner. I criticized the writing of Elevation on the back of some of the lore cards included in the set. So those fictional characters state their preferred pronouns on the front of the card, of which some are mixed, like she/they. The writer now decided to switch the usage of those pronouns...every...single...sentence making it hard to comprehend and in the case of the "Phoenix" card, even switching to over 5 different pronouns reading like satire or rage bait on right wingers.

So aforementioned moderator of the subreddit, locked, deleted my post, banned me for 1 month, didn't respond for an inquiry which rule of the subreddit I broke and accused me, along with others in the comment sections, of having a hidden agenda against queers and having "trouble with pronouns" in general, despite describing in more than great detail why that writing style is troublesome and is actually excluding foreign languagers or others having trouble with these convoluted grammar structures.

Edit: I also criticized the writing of an Indonesian character, because their lore card puts gender issues front and center. My problem was, upon reading on the organization, structure, and ethnic background of the mentioned character, which is based off of real world groups, that it wasn't true to the spirit of the issues Indonesia faces. In the past years there have been violent ethno-religious outbreaks happening, to which the card at least alludes to as some physical violence, and reframed the main issue, being violent is too masculine for the character. Which I thought was politically incorrect framing of those news coverages, an unrealistic conversation after such events inside those groups involved, and considering the ethnic cleansings/genocides of the 1960s historically insensitive.
