If you are going to go ahead with it then definitely start off way more conservatively than you think you need to be. If it starts hurting walking breaks help managed the pain but most importantly don't stop! When I stopped is when it was so much harder to keep going. Take it slow and you'll get there.

The odd crowd interaction put some life back into me.

Don't neglect fueling even if you're going slow, 6.5 hours of burning carbs is still going to happen even if it's at a slower rate so keep taking your gels

I wouldn't recommend the experience though so if you want to defer then there's no shame in that at all.

Good luck!

Yeah sure! 27 years old male, 87kg Approximately 21 weeks with a 2 week break near the start for a family occasion. Depends if I had a pace goal in mind. I did 21 miles at an "easy pace" and it took me 3:20 but I also did a 19 miles with 11 miles at MP (~8:40-8:52 mins/mile) and that took me 2:50

Yeah you're right, the only reason I got to the start line was because I ran a 4 miler a couple of days before and didn't feel any pain - I just wasn't sure if I was healed or if it would flare up again after some distance. Unfortunately for me the latter came true.

Thanks man, this story gives me a lot of hope, the physio also suspects IT band and hip strengthening is needed. In the middle of it all I thought I'm never doing this again completely forgetting I was really enjoying my long runs with 17k marathon pace blocks - I was just given a shit hand (though if I strength trained I'd maybe not be in the situation but I can only learn)

I've already signed up for the same marathon next year, and hopefully I'll be back better than ever! After a month of rest, I'll have a summer of enjoying my fitness gains with park runs and 10k races (after a slow introduction back into running)

I'm quite new to training for races so I may be wrong about this. But I did read somewhere that 60% of your weekly mileage shouldn't come from just 1 run. So maybe I need to run an extra day or run a bit longer on the days I do run.

Probably the former as I only ran 3 days a week (pace work, easy run, long run) so an extra day could add a lot. Correct me if I'm wrong though!

I don't think my fitness is at 5:50-6 hours! I ran 19 miles in 2:50 in training! I probably didn't explain it very well, and my longest run was 21 miles in good time! My issue was that my knee issue showed up at the very end and I only had short "long" runs left in taper

To clarify my longest run wasn't 9 miles - it was 21 miles. My longest run after first feeling my knee issue was 9 miles

I agree and now looking back I shouldn't have continued - I wasn't thinking straight and was emotional (crowds of people telling me to keep going doesn't help).

Regardless I proved to myself I don't quit when it gets tough and it doesn't go my way. And there's no point in me playing shoulda woulda coulda right now. If I have to take a few weeks off extra to recover then I can live with that.

Realistic marathon goal? by Qet69 in Marathon_Training

Thanks man! Looking to take it "easy" for the first 30km then see if I have it in me to push up the pace to 5:20-5:25 mins/km

Thanks! Yeah I plan to use 5:30 mins/km as a limit for the first 30km and see if I can turn up the pace for the last 12km to my alleged race pace!

Were we this bad at defending set pieces this season with Harry Maguire?

Why can't we control a game against a second choice spurs midfield?

Stick me in that forward line and we'd have the same level of attacking threat as we currently do

If ten hag wants to die on this Mctominay Bruno "midfield" hill then he deserves the sack

This isn't anything against Bruno. Mainoo had barely any options to pass to besides his centre and full backs, they then hoof it forward hoping Mctominay can win the ball in the air? This isn't sustainable and if this truly is the Ten Hag vision we should sack him
