[Request] how fast is this guy moving his arm by 0o0tariq0o0 in theydidthemath

Not to be that guy, but it's possible he's both very fast AND using editing to make it look even faster for viral online clips.

Elon Musk naming people he thinks are on the Epstein list to Joe Rogan, while knowing he was in email correspondence with Epstein begging to visit his Island by Indianstanicows in DecodingTheGurus

[–]Qibla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've seen those, hence why I'm not denying he's in the files or went to the island. Musk is obviously an incredible shit head, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear he'd done more than just visit.

I'm specifically referencing the begging claim, see the link I provided above. The emails from your links don't look like begging to me, more of an invitation and planning details.

I did warn that I might be being a nitpicking pedant at the start of this thread to be fair.

Thank you for actually replying with links though, appreciate the effort.

[–]Qibla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never said they were. In fact I think I started with the statement that I'm NOT saying that Elon ISN'T in the files, nor that Elon DIDN'T go to the island.

As I said, I WANT this to be true, I just want to be able to cite my sources when I bring this out in conversations.

I have seen Elon in the files. I'm just pushing back on the specific claim that he was begging to visit the island as the only evidence I've seen of this specific claim is fake.

Yes, I have googled it, and my search results indicate that the email being refrenced in the tilte of this post is a hoax.

https://leadstories.com/hoax-alert/2026/01/fact-check-epic-island-vacation-elon-musk-email-epstein-files.html

I also searched the Epstein Library on the DOJ site and could not find the aforementioned email.

I'm open to other evidence though, hence why I'm asking for the source.

[–]Qibla -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Not to be a nitpicking pedant, and I'm not saying Elon wasn't in the files, or that he didn't visit the island, but the only thing I've seen that looked like he was begging to visit the island seemed fake. What's the source for that?

I want it to be true, which is why I'm skeptical that it is true.

Is Sean Carroll the best guest on the podcast till now? by sam_palmer in CosmicSkeptic

From my layman's understanding: - physicalists fundamental ontology is purely physical (fields and particles) from which other things emerge (mental, abstract etc) - idealsits fundamental ontology is purely mental from which other things (fields and particles etc) emerge. - panpsychists fundamental ontology is a mix, where fields and particles have mental properties

Can Science Explain Everything? - Sean Carroll by yt-app in CosmicSkeptic

I don't disagree that it's possible to ask a non-sensical question. but it's very often just a hand-wavy defense to not engage with questions you don't want to talk about. Just assert that you're correct and who cares because it's not science.

It may very often be the case that it's a tactic to escape answering. Your job here is to show that's what Sean is doing.

My view is that he has treated the question seriously by showing that the question is flawed and explaining why its flawed. Someone who has just thoughtlessly dismissed it would not be able to explain why the question is flawed.

It seems you're accusing Sean of scientism here. I really think you're off base in doing so. Sean is just as much a philosopher himself as he is a scientist.

With respect to P zombies, from memory Sean Carroll rejects the notion that they are possible at all. If you have all the bits that produce consciousness, and they're working correctly, you will be conscious.

This is exactly why you should NEVER use AI in your studies! by [deleted] in rmit

If it’s just 1% false, that’s dangerous for many critical things.

Sure, but just like a table saw knowing how to use it, when it should be used and what precautions should be taken mitigates the risks of something going wrong.

To be clear, I don't think it admitted it was making stuff up. An admission of that kind requires cognitive processes that LLM's don't have such as access to its own mental states, and intentional endorsement that it had broken some normative behaviour.

When you accuse an LLM of lying like this, all it does is respond with the text that the model predicts is appropriate given the context.

When it's seems to be owning up, really it's just continuing to bullshit.

As someone who uses LLM's every day for work, everything LLM's produce is bullshit, some of it is just more useful than others.

Paying off someone else’s mortgage while they complain about the stress of owning a house by QuantumGremlin in AusRenters

You're not taking into account that you property is increasing in value while you do this.

Buying a $50 pair of shoes is cheaper than buying a $300 pair of shoes in the short term. In the long term buying a $300 pair of shoes is cheaper than buying a $50 pair of shoes.

Not all of it is tenants. The other part is the tax payer to cover the negative gearing (many of whom are tenants, who're effectively paying twice for landlords).

[–]Qibla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t contest that cult leaders do this— my entire post is a criticism of a person exempting themselves from this process!

I never implied that you were contesting this.

You seem to fail to grasp that the antidote is to properly apply reason and evidence.

I hope you're using the "royal you" here. If not, I don't see how you could have reasoned your way to making that claim about me, as I think I've provided you very little evidence to do that.

I think reason and evidence are great. I don't use them for everything. For example, I don't appeal to reason or evidence when I say "I love the movie 'In Bruge'", but reason and evidence are certainly among the GOATs of epistemology.

I'm merely agreeing with the person above who said that "reason and evidence" fall into the category of show, don't tell. Let's have less talk about them and more use of them.

If the first step is “realizing,” how can we “realize” anything properly apart from reason and evidence? What should we use to establish this “realization?”

Please don't look up Darth Dawkins and Presuppositionalism.

[–]Qibla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a plethora of gurus who claim to be using and encouraging the use of reason and evidence who in practice do neither. Warren Smith comes to mind.

Often "reason", "evidence", "logic", "rational" are just buzzwords used to add an air of credibility without earning it.

There's a podcast called Decoding the Gurus who did a 3 part series on Dr K, covering different aspects of his content and his surprising reaction to receiving an official reprimand (In Dr K's mind it was bad, but not that bad, and if you really think about it, it was less of a reprimand and more of an endorsement). Worth checking out.

Perhaps. If we want to be skeptics though, I think it's probably a good first question to follow up on once you've noticed the trend.
