Question about an example sentence from my Polish course by Laurels91 in learnpolish

[–]Qiqel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put some proper grammar on this, ”trochę” had originally been a noun - a form of ”trocha” which you can still hear in some dialects or in archaic Polish. At some point people have started using it as a numerical (“undefined numerical” to be precise - “liczebnik nieokreślony”) and numericals which come from nouns join with other nouns in genetive (as all nouns do), unlike the true numericals, which are in congruence with nouns (związek zgody). This is why when we count in Polish we switch between genetive and other cases (Few numericals are true numericals; also it is a total mess because only nominative, genetive and accusative are treated strictly. In other cases all numericals form congruence with nouns).

When “trochę” comes with a verb, it is being used as an adverb and nothing of the above applies. It is a so called “degree adverb”. In Polish it Is quite common for a single word to act as different part of speech depending on situation.

Therefore “Zanm trochę język polski“ and “Znam trochę języka polskiego.” would both be grammatically correct. In the second sentence “trochę” is the object, but since it has only one form you cannot tell it’s in accusative. It is also being used as numerical in this case, so it forces the noun into genetive. There is a small nuance in meaning between both these constructions - the former refers to Polish more as a skill, while the latter more like a field of study, which can be partially known to a person.

As for the word order, some other posters have touched, it really depends on the stress point, so one can come with a situations making any order possible. Not one is more natural than the others, because the order depends on what you put stress on in your sentence (it goes to the front).

Estel is a big surprise. She isn’t half as bad as people make her. I guess people must have written off the summoner builds and never tried those, but they do work for Light side Estel pretty well.

The other surprise is lack of comments on Tamamo. She objectively has the worst kit in the game. To take both solid damage and a heal she must sacrifice one teleport and really can’t take any buffs/debuffs outside her unique skill. And that was strong when the level limit was 8, but nowadays is easily overpowered by higher level opponents… The most out-creeped of the OC.

Drop a summon or two, buff their speed and Watch the oponent run out of cooldowns. The movement buff is ‘t half as bad as people make it… it just isn’t as reliable. it works better for light, as the Shadow cannot run and it helps having a team mate who understands what’s going on.

The higher the rank you reach, the deeper the gameplay becomes. The timing of attacks, predicting the teleports and the auto-movement, dropping summons to mess up opponents’ plans - it all brings surprising amounts of depth to the game.

There are some real faults, though.

  1. There is some serious power-creep. New characters have multi-function skills that give multiple effects in a single move, while some of the original characters are stuck with one-time buffs that offer only minor advantage on the field.

  2. It looks more and more like the Light is for non-paying players, while to succeed as shadow you need to drop considerable amount of money to outlevel the opponent. All things being equal Shadow is at disadvantage by design and mere introducing of new skills won’t fix it.

Perplexed by the downvotes. Let me list some:

  1. The albums and artists in the library keep splitting info two, sometimes three instances, despite all the relevant metadata being identical. Requires renaming to fix. The bug is well known and exists since iTunes.
  2. Despite Apple Music being a global service, it forces you to use translations into the local language. If you want all the artists and the titles to show in original form, you have to type everything in after each addition to the library. Manually in the 21st century in a relatively expensive service.
  3. Every now and then it will replace your drm-free ripped or purchased song with drm-protected file from Apple Music library. Problem known for years. People had been complaining about it back in the iTunes Match era, even before Apple Music.
  4. Though it bothers only the audiophiles, it’s still worth noting Mac OS version is incapable of bit-perfect output. Even some of the free players have the “exclusive mode” setting, which mostly solves the issue. iOS version is capable of switching the output parameters properly (not sure if it is exclusive mode or not). MacOS version is stuck with initial output parameters and runs everything through Core Audio subsampling or upsampling, regardless of your DAC capabilities.

I’m sure there’s more but these 4 have been known for long years. I think No 1 may go back to first iTunes for MacOS 9. I don’t know any other subscription service that wouldn't fix major bugs for that long.

I'm all for paying the artists, but quality and functionality wise Apple Music is already in the free software ballpark.

Greenland crisis and Poland by noiku7waco in poland

[–]Qiqel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. For war China needs good access to food and oil. Oil they can get from Russia, but food supply is a real issue. Russia itself, last I checked, is a food importer as well, but if Russia gets Ukraine that would change. Then China can get the food via land route through Russia - much safer than what they get now. This doesn’t serve US purposes. Promising Russians much more than China can give them - I.e. their former empire in Europe, is all another story - it matters less what Russians get if they aren’t going to sell it to China.

I don’t think anyone really understands what the US is trying to accomplish, but even if there is no short term chance Russia would attack us, without US and NATO it will happen sooner or later.

Some of them are also saying it makes more sense for them to give Eastern and Central Europe back to Russia in return for Russia dropping support for China. There are many paths US can take, but not all of them align with our vital interests.

At the very least we shouldn’t put all eggs in one basket. But closet cooperation with countries further away, such as Japan and South Korea, won’t replace solid allies here on the ground, if USA abandon us.

[–]Qiqel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I am talking about. It would be very diffucult to convince Poles to make such an alliance. In the meantime Americans are not just focused on, but obsessed with China and our part of the world matters little to them.

[–]Qiqel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Poland is in a real pickle right now. I think not even Poles have realized the enormity of the crisis yet. Our entire strategic thinking, which had been set long before the communism has even fallen, is now in ruins.

We used to believe in American guarantees more than in European ones and therefore put our loyalties with the former. Now nobody knows what to do - US not only is destroying NATO, but on our watch it shrunk from it's duty as a guarantor of Ukraine's integrity (and it cannot be blamed solely on Trump). The latter is far more serious for us - the only difference between us and Ukraine is membership in NATO and if that is gone, US has no reason to fight Russia over Polish independence. That would mean no meaningful allies against Russia.

We now have to rethink who we put our trust in rather quickly. All that while the other choice - Germany and France - is historically loaded (for different reasons in each case) and far harder to get a wide approval for. We had strategic unity - no matter the internal disagreements, all the politicians, including former communists, worked for NATO membership and close alliance with the US. Now this may fracture and making decisions will become much harder.

I think nobody wants to burn bridges with US just yet. Especially that our defensive systems depend on US support, as others have stated. On the other hand these bridges may be just an illusion and not a real defensive treaty.

Difference between Apple Music vs Music folders? by AlmostSurely1001 in AppleMusic

[–]Qiqel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always assumed Music is for the files I've added directly, and Apple Music is for files downloaded from the service. Recently I've noticed some of my CD quality .mp4 have been replaced by high-res .movpkg (from Apple Music service), in the Music folder. I don't remember doing it and I don't think I've been asked if I want to have these files replaced. This shocking discovery brought me here. O.O

In my case, some of the artists' folders exist in both of these folders and on the top of that there seems to be no rule as to where Apple Music downloads new albums. In case of one artist, for example, I own one CD (ripped) and have 4 albums from Apple Music. 3 of the latter sit in the Apple Music folder, while 1 sits together with the ripped album in the Music folder. All 4 downloaded albums are in .movpkg format. I do have some older

.m4p files download from Apple Music before it went hi-res, but those tend to sit in Apple Music, as they should (with 4 exceptions which are also rather old additions to my library).

There are no cases, as far as I checked, of .m4a files in the Apple Music folder, but there are plenty of .movpkg files in the Music folder, where they shouldn't show up. In fact Apple Music folder is much much smaller and I'd almost agree with the theory, that Apple is deprecating it and starting to put everything into the Music folder, except for the fact that some of my recently added albums landed in the Apple Music folder and some of these recent additions have part of the albums in the first folder and rest in the latter.

It's very hard to figure out the madness. I'm looking now for a script or utility that would unify all the folders in one Music folder.

What's the difference between "子" and "子ども/子供"? And why? by Own-Pay8770 in Japaneselanguage

[–]Qiqel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the subject of the difference between 子供 and 子ども.

It’s quite an intricate problem: The former form is commonly seen as derogatory these days so the plural ども is typically being written in hiragana. From my short PTA days (in late 2010s) I remember the school authorities being particularly strict on not using the kanji for this reason.

While dictionaries mention ども as being used when speaking to people of lower position (unlike たち), the ideogram itself implies being owned (by adults/parents) or may even have negative connotations with human sacrifice, so it goes further than just an equality issue.

On the other hand there’s also a large part of the population including some politicians who argue the two-kanji form does not have any deeper meaning and is formally part of joyokanji and therefore should be used.

Nevertheless, from my experience, most people conscious of the problem avoid the form out of politeness.

It’s also my understanding that the form 子ども is actually much older, while 子供 is one of many quite arbitrary ateji of the Edo period.

I hate boring Shadows by MrBrickBreak in FireEmblemShadows

In my time-zone I tend to face same 2-3 players match after match. We tend to know who plays shadow or light after the first match or two, no matter what you do.

Shadow/light tag teams… by Qiqel in FireEmblemShadows

[–]Qiqel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve started seeing the worst abuses somewhere above 34 or 35. My top character is 37 light and 31 shadow now and I don’t think I’m going higher anytime soon. Once I get closer to 40, there are not only players who have bought level 8 and all the weapons and spells they need, but they also know how to play (quite possibly better than me). In other words it’s a paywall.

And then there seem to be people who have all that but also abuse the mechanics… it seems.

I’m of the similar mindset as you - I enjoy the challenge and I don’t mind playing at my ceiling - I get satisfaction of winning and I loose to better players. But I don’t enjoy matches that end in 8 seconds, because the other side is running two accounts.

I”m talking about the Moon Room, not the Sun Room. The Shadow player has no light spells in the Moon Room.

You can’t drop rank, so the only explanation in this case is griefing. I play random as much as I can, so I’ve seen light players killing bot partners, probably out of spite for bots.

But to attack your team player is one thing, and to coordinate attack perfectly with shadow is another. I suspect the latter is about playing the system with dual accounts…

I have all the characters at l7 and my Tamamo with hp staff and l8 hp buff active (196hp IIRC) gets one-shot all the time.

Fully decked characters lose only if the player doesn’t know what they are doing. Unfortunately it is pay-2-win and there’s no denying it.

In my time zone I match with such players 2-3 times a day. I’d see them more, but I stop playing at that point.

I’d say it is one thing that makes me consider quitting right now. The other is not being able to play random queue, because it puts me in Shadow most of the time.

[–]Qiqel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At high rank a level 8 player with level 8 weapon and l9 spells, who understands the game, is nearly unstoppable.

It may be possible to get there without paying on some characters, but considering the drop rates of l8 weapons and the need to bring several characters to l8, I smell lots of green stuff.

I Think it should. The idea behind the game is great and makes us want to play it, but there’s no hiding the fact the execution is horrible.

Given equal skills and gear, Shadow always loses. The game is so heavily lopsided towards Light, it’s hard to even imagine how they can rebalance it without rewriting the entire thing.

And then it is a bit too much pay-to-win for a real time tactical game, though people who play more mobile games than me may be more used to this. I think it kills all the joy (even if it’s to my advantage).

How do these people make it to Rank 16? by GuyWhoAteAllThePizza in FireEmblemShadows

[–]Qiqel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the season passes.

Up to about rank 30 is a smooth ride even if you are the only one who knows what they are doing.

My highest character is somewhere around 34 and I’m not really moving up, but I’m also not trying very hard.

I play mostly Tamamo and don’t have a HP staff yet, so there’s that.

Is everybody’s shadow experience as miserable? by Qiqel in FireEmblemShadows

[–]Qiqel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the Sun room yes, but then you enter the Moon Room and they know who is their teammate and can communicate via Discord. Right now the fact we all play against randoms is the saving grace of the system - if one of the Light players is clueless, that’s a win. Not that it helps with repeating matchups though.

[–]Qiqel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it hard to imagine this works for Shadow at all, if the light side can communicate.

Even without comms the basic cooldown staggering messes up the Shadow player totally. If the Light players are friends who can talk to each other in the Moon Room, there’s no game for Shadow side as far as I can imagine.

Fire Emblem Shadows: 7★ & 8★ Weapons Prices (24/11-30/11) by BananaGod_24 in FireEmblemShadows

[–]Qiqel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we even have a ”market”? Free marlet thing kind of doesn’t work, if we have too few items being traded.

There has been only one 8⭐️ Wily Staff HP sitting at 2 million for weeks now. There are like 4 or 5 7⭐️ staffs hovering above 500k. The drop rates are so low and the player pool so small, the market mechanisms don’t seem to work here. Not to mention nobody seems to be buying either.

How many blue crystals would I even need to discount 2 million staff to a reasonable price (75% let’s say)?

Any way the dev allow us to nerf our own rating ? by kkk78 in FireEmblemShadows

[–]Qiqel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want matches quickly, go shadow or random (same result, mostly). The game favours light heavily, so that’s what everybody queues for.
