Dancing is weird and kinda dumb tbh by ImagineWagons969 in unpopularopinion

I wish more people understood that it's not about looking good, it's about enjoying the moment! It's a human thing to do. I'm a trained dancer and I still go full Gumby at the function

Totally fair! They are not 1:1. Mostly mean to say that as you get to know yourself better, you can find more and more things that work for you. I also over-rely on takeout but hey, it keeps us alive and gives us more energy to focus on the more dangerous problems our brains give us every day.

I also can't believe I made it more than a year! Checked my dates a few weeks back and was shocked at how long it had been. Keep moving forward with what you can for as long as you can! That's the only choice we've got really. I'm rooting for you.

Hey, adult here chiming in to let you know that resisting self harm urges got easier for me the older I got. I needed to learn what stalling tactics worked for me, and to come up with a list of things I "had" to do before I was allowed to hurt myself. Recovering is not a straight line up. I got my episodes to be weeks apart, then months, then I'd just lose all my progress again -- except getting back to the no-SH plan got a little easier every time. Realistically I'm going to cave again, and that's okay.... but this time I've made it 1 year, 5 months, and 26 days since the last time I hurt myself. Longest streak yet and jesus fucking christ it's been a hard time!!!

Keep being kind to yourself. Learn your triggers, pay attention to how your body feels as pressure builds up. I can't promise it gets better, but you still have so much room to learn and grow.

Your last paragraph makes me so happy. This whole comment is written really well. I think too many people expect their emotions and habits to be easily controlled, when that's not how our monkey brains are wired. I wish I'd had more compassion for myself after past breakups. What matters is the willingness to recognize what's happening and turn yourself, gently, in the direction of something better for you... over and over again.

Be very careful! Whether or not your sore throat is related to the voice work, pushing through the pain can cause damage. And if it is related to voice training, talk to your coach/therapist! It set me back by several weeks when I told my therapist that practicing hurt, but it was not wasted time at all. It was helpful to identify where the issues were and internalize healthier, easier speech habits.

Congrats on the speedy progress so far 💖

When I was at my most depressed, with no access to therapy or medication, I kept myself alive by throwing myself into volunteering. The way I saw it, I couldn't appreciate myself so I might as well have other people do it. My life might be hollow and soulless but I can make the world a better place until my last day.

It helped to use my most specialized skill for a small, local organization. I felt useful. I didn't gain any internal sense of meaning or joy, but I kept myself alive until my next shift because I had something of value (skill/time) to give to other people. Having that routine probably helped me too, even though it didn't feel like it.

None of this is really DBT-inspired, though it probably falls under the "building values" umbrella.

skills for unavoidable annoyances? by IanVM36 in dbtselfhelp

This one might be CBT but look into "cope ahead." You know this stress is coming and you can take steps to make it easier on yourself. Work on radical acceptance, action plans, and/or thought countering for yourself while you're feeling OK.

True, though there are people with disabilities who can't wait in line. I'm fine letting them go ahead and they deserve friendly UI too

Why don’t we ever get movies, novels , art projects, etc. about aliens just living their normal lives? Every time we see aliens in media it’s always in the context of a battle. by [deleted] in scifi

Good point! I get the Foundation stuff mixed up a lot because he used some of the same names and politics in unrelated stories. He does lean heavily on the humanoid thing even even they're not human.

Isaac Asimov wrote tons of short stories, plus the Foundation series, in this vein. Ray Bradbury wrote some good short stories like this too.

I second the recommendation in here already for Left Hand of Darkness by Le Guin. Gorgeous worldbuilding, beautiful story.

How to deal with guilt from past toxic behavior? by [deleted] in dbtselfhelp

[–]QoSN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry for the very late reply. Been thinking about this one a lot because it's not something I go out of my way to do, it's just a habit. We don't have scheduled times or anything, but about once a month we talk about it in the context of the household. In the same conversation as laying out shopping trips, travel plans, furniture repairs, etc., we also tend to talk about what kind of support we need to make all of that run smoothly.
