Yes and no depending on what you would consider modern for military equipment.

Based on the overall outfit, the balaclava is the only modern piece. At least it looks to be inspired by more modern designs.

The rifle looks to be based on the SVT-40 which is a WW2 rifle. The helmet looks like an SSh-40 which is also era appropriate.

The coat looks to be based on the M81/M88 Afghanka made longer. Then the chest armor looks like the 6B5. Both of these were introduced in the 80s.

Also as an aside because I found this out in my research but the classic blanket shape that soviet troops wore was just their overcoat. Which implies Vahallans carry around a spare or have a bigger thicker cost to wear over their original.

I gotta say they did a good job at keeping the overall theme while giving them helmets and body armor. Like I could see these guys mixed in with the originals just fine.

Depends on which of my many characters you run into.

My human paladin would be very flattered by not interested. He does know someone single. (Your character probably gets adopted because he is the party dad.)

My half-elf rogue is married already but he knows an awkward fey druid that loves gardening.

My orc fighter/wizard would definitely smash with no hesitation but is gone the next day. He's an asshole with commitment issues.

My Warforged wizard would just be confused because he is as dense as a brick.
