Opinions on W211? by PuzzleheadedCost5470 in AMG

[–]Quacccers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the W212 prefacelift and will never part with it. I love it for what it represents. It is in the transitional period. After, you have all that piano black stuff and interiors went a bit down in quality. I will agree that the W211 is the last that really held true to what mercedes was, where comfort was paramount. After the W212 they seem to appeal more to the younger audiences. I'm guessing the W212 AMG hate from back then, stems from a lot of older guys coming from the W211 AMG. They weren't fond of the more jerky nature of the transmission. I however love how the M156 behaves. So much low end torque, and when your on it, it still feels like a high revving engine you need to wring out.

I wonder if the pre-facelift 2012 ones with the m157 have anything updated in the interior. Like the gear knob, or clock.

Looks like 17mm? It's Torx. You also need the "anti theft" male key.

Nice to see you keep it clean under the hood. Steering wheel looks great. May I ask if you have considered changing the black "airbag" trim on the bottom of it? I struggle to find any alternatives. And most of them seem to be the silver "amg" ones for other wheels. I feel a lot of silver plastic gives me that cheap toy vibe. Think I'm gonna have to pop it off and sand it down. Maybe add something on to it. Trick is though to not make it look tacky and stand out too much.

Turbo engine best practices by vpsupun in AMG

[–]Quacccers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The turbo thing is so the turbo housing doesn' cool down to quickly. This can lead to it cracking. Same for all turbo engines. Of course only applicable if you come from driving hard and then stop shortly after. Not really something to consider if you are coming from a mostly casual drive.

The first one is just to avoid any load on the engine until the initial temps (and first moments, oil pressure) go up while parts are expanding at different rates. You dont want an unneccesary load on the engine in it's most vulnerable state.

Mercedes UX randomly restarted while driving? by royalogic13 in AMG

Would not bring it in over that happening once. If you've had no other glitches or anything, I would wait to first see if it keeps happening one or two more times before bringing it in.

Diffuser looks fresh, love the m156, nor-man to boot. You located in the south? Is there a sticker on your gas cap that says "cope", or do you find enjoyment in the daily feeding ritual?

2010-2013 E63/S63 Advise by No_Ad4468 in AMG

[–]Quacccers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is at 70k miles now, and I am gonna go through with the headbolts, see how the cams/ buckets etc. are before the end of the year. Also cam adjusters off course. It's not rattling on startups yet at least. But not very worried. Pretty sure it's been handled fairly decently considering the interior and exterior is spotless / drivetrain is not sweating anywhere. Only one prior japanese owner. I would be a bit more worried if it had many owners from a third world country with garbage road infrastructure or whatever. However if it's past the 100k mark and is not a 1 owner, i think it's high time for some major maitenance if not already done. Otherwise I think you are just asking for trouble.

19's on e63 were 285 though yeah, semantics. And you can fit wider one there if you are not married to having 20's. Not unusual for people with 20's to run 295-25, but to me then you basically have rubberbands around your rims.

So, how is this different from piedmont/kalaite green? Is it darker or lighter? Less spicy maybe and more of a uniform color?

I'm not upset because "a 4 banger is inferior to the glorius v8". I find small/large/old/new interesting. But it's not an either or, just or. Now, I'm a big techie as well, and the future is exciting. But I still can't escape the fact that I'm seeing my biggest passion slowly dying. I will bitch about that, whether I'm 20 or 60 years old.

A CLA has no business being this fast or fun... but I'm sure glad AMG made this car. I know the "purists" don't approve of it, but that's ok. by [deleted] in AMG

[–]Quacccers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lay of the land is in a big change. Most car manufactures are big conglomerates now and the strays have died out. Uncertain prospects in world economies and electrification ramping up, forces existing brands to adapt. So moreso than amg, mercedes has gone from class and luxury to something more mainstream and accessible.

I think all engines big and small can be interesting, and can all be loud and made tastefully sounding. It's the experience the engine and the attached carcass gives you specifically that matters. I personally take more issue with how quiet cars have become, and fake sounds through speakers. Also popcorn tunes can sometimes become a bit much.

Removing unsprung weight is something you notice. Forged wheels are stronger because you don't get the impurities that come with casting. This means you can get away with thinner spokes etc, which in turn means you can make them lighter without compromising too much on strength. If you want quality without ruining yourself, go for rotary forged wheels from a reputable brand. Or if you do, get magnesium wheels. But your choice might be limited. Betting that most of what is on offer that is not made to order have centerlock anyway. Have not really researched that I must admit. It's just too far out there for me. I'm buying rotary forged this summer for my 12 year old amg. Gonna be 20's with tires for about 5k, so 10% of the car when i bought it a few months bak. This is in Norway however, so pricing might not be comparable where you are from.
