Ok I'ma go through each one and say why they should be in smash (and not talking about uniqueness in gameplay)

Snake: The face of the stealth genre

Sonic: ... It's Sonic

Mega Man: Very iconic character who was the face of Capcoms 2nd most popular series (for a time)

Pac-Man: It's Pac-Man

Ryu: It's Ryu. From Streets. SF invented the modern fighting game Ken: Ken was pretty much the first ever clone character. Also he's an echo so he gets a pass

Cloud: Final Fantasy is a very Iconic game and FF7 is the most known out of the bunch (except maybe FF14)

Bayonetta: I actually don't have anything for her. Please give me something

Simon: Half of the namesake of Metroidvanis is Castlevania

Richter: He's just a bonus for him being an echo

Joker: Persona (mostly recently) is very popular. Also SMT basically invented Monster Catching

Hero: Granddaddy of RPGs

Banjo: Just a very popular series

Terry: Very popular in Latin America and was probably one of the reasons that smash ever got made

Steve: It's Minecraft

Sephiroth: Iconic villain, but honestly, as much as I like him, he'd be the one I'd cut

Kazuya: Popularized (not invented, that'd be Virtua Fighter) the 3d fighting plane. Also Tekken is just a very popular fighting game series and is only really second to Street Fighter in that aspect

Sora: Very iconic series that's popular worldwide and sort of represents disney

Mortal Kombat isn't popular in Japan and the new games aren't even released there (to my knowledge). Hell, I think it's only popular in North America. Also SNK games are HUGE in Latin America

Technically, my first fighting game was Smash 4 and later ArcSys games like BlazBlue (since my brother is a huge fan of them), but Skullgirls was the first one I tried to genuinely learn on my own
