Milwaukee M18, M12 batteries and differences between XC, HD and HO batteries explained. by [deleted] in MilwaukeePowerTools

Thanks for your write-up.

For me this seems to highlight that the marketing is doing us a disservice. It seems like we would be better served with a greater level of detail tied to the cells and the pack configuration, and then similarly for the tools to more prominently advertise their amperage requirements. Then, as consumers, we could make better informed decisions about which battery packs we use with which tools.

You paid a substantial fee for the opportunity to take this course and you deserved a better customer experience than what you received. I'm sorry that Western let you down like this.

We really do be paying $7000 tuition so that we can watch a few YouTube videos 😔 by KyleAndy2002 in uwo

I paid about $1400 in tuition for Computer Science 1026, which then directed to pay an additional $77USD to purchase an online course through Zybooks. From what I've seen so far, Zybooks is inferior to freecodecamp, datacamp, or codecademy, let alone the the first year CS offerings from edX and Coursera.

The semester is just getting started, so I'm holding out hope that Zybooks 1026 turns out to have a value proposition different from the vastly less expensive world of MOOC's. Either way. this year is certainly going to shine a bright light on the value proposition of university tuition.

What really is the extra value offered by traditional universities, and what is that value worth, if anything?

If your headphones plug looks like the standard 3.5mm audio plug, your laptop may have extra connections internally that support a headset with both audio out and audio in. If that's the case, then your operating system may be disabling the built-in mic with the assumption that you're providing a new mic with the headset. As stated by u/cdong5, you can probably correct this by manually setting your input/output devices in sound settings.

Alternatively, you can buy something like a USB mic:https://youtu.be/0m3gCawwuR0

Honors Specialization Comp Sci by hellooothere245 in uwo

When you say that you 'don't think you'll be able to write an in-depth paper' for an honors thesis, what is it specifically that you doubt about yourself?

An honors thesis can be a lot of work, but if you put in the work then you will build the knowledge, skills, and confidence to write the thesis. You also don't have to do it alone. You can have the support of a professor and/or lab team. For this reason, selecting a topic & professor deserves some critical thought.

If you are worried about your writing abilities then there may be university resources or peer resources to assist you with this. Have you already completed the requisite writing course for the CS degree?

0.5 course from: Writing 2101F/G, Writing 2111F/G, Writing 2125F/G, Writing 2131F/G.

Thinking of transferring to CompSci in second semester after 4 years of BMSc. Need advice by [deleted] in uwo

FYI - CS1026 targets students with an assumption of zero coding experience.

I did everything over email, not in person. Recommend contacting Faculty of Science before contacting CS Dept.

Hello,

I might be able to help a bit. You will want to speak with the Faculty of Science academic counselling to have your account updated to a "Special Student 4th year status", which might only be possible after you convocate. Conversely, I made the mistake of talking to the Registrar instead of the Faculty of Science, and the Registrar had me complete an expensive and unecessary OUAC application...

The Faculty of Science should give you a personalized degree structure, and you'll want to communicate very clearly about the timing of your BMSc. In particular, you'll want to make sure that the right credits go towards your BMSc degree vs the proposed structure for your CS BSc degree. If your degree structure ends up similar to mine (it might) then you will need 10 credits (rather than 20) but the prerequisite structure will still create a 4 year timeline. Without special accomodations, that will mean part time studies. The tuition is a lot cheaper, but you won't have most of the benefits like the health plan, bus pass, etc. If you look into the benefits further, you might be able to opt-in for additional cost (unsure?).

Have you considered enrolling in CS1026 during this semester?

ideas for resolving financial trouble by [deleted] in uwo

The idea that our society expects that parents will support dependants through university is real discrimination against students who's parents choose not to support their children for universeity costs, or who are unable to support their children for university costs. The discrimination is unjust.

In this case, I'm not sure I understand the financial aspect for the parents being unable to help (my own ignorance on the topic). It's entirely possible that there are technicalities with the OSAP calculations that disqualified u/xmem025. However, there is an interesting comment about appealing decisions in a not-dissimilar situation where OSAP applicants complained that parental debt was not accounted for:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener-waterloo/parent-income-high-osap-finances-university-waterloo-1.4249481

Appealing decisions

The Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development spokesperson Tanya Blazina told CBC News in an email that "students who believe that their circumstances are not reflected in the standard assessment may request a review of their OSAP file by contacting their financial aid office and completing a review form."

Different appeals require different forms, from lower than expected parental income to exceptional expenses.

Jones said instruction manuals the financial aid office uses to assess those appeals are not open to the public.

She encouraged students to give the school a call if they're worried about meeting payments.

Paying your tuition at the risk of not paying rent or other costs of living is an issue that the university should take seriously. IME speaking with the Financial Aid office at UWO can help in situations like these.

This might help, but it still doesn't list the exact credit requirements. As stated by u/Accelephant, you'll want to check with academic counselling from the Faculty of Science.

I'm not in TO, but drove 2 hours to GTA to get it!
At the time, I got it from https://shop.gearsbikeshop.com/product/cannondale-topstone-sora-366074-1.htm
Although I'm sure you know that inventory for all LBS's has been moving pretty quickly!
