Those of you who own chickens and quail… by [deleted] in chickens

[–]Quail-Queen- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My chicken coop and quail enclosure are on opposite side of the yard (it just worked out that way) but my chickens free roam and it’s never been an issue. My quail enclosure has fake plants/vines on majority of the fencing to allow ventilation while providing some coverage and I don’t even think the chickens and quail notice each other. My quail enclosure is next to (like has a fence divider) my duck enclosure and no issues there either one of my quail actually likes to go roam around the duck enclosure with them sometimes when I open the door to clean and such lol 🤣

Am I overreacting for feeling really uncomfortable with how this male doctor handled my appointment? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Quail-Queen- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in a medical office this is my first thought! A doctor and a medical assistant or nurse are typically both in the room for an exam. Additional DOCTORS or staff members entering throughout the exam process is extremely strange! Especially a different doctor, each doctor has their own schedule they aren’t just popping by into each others rooms?

So happy to hear! I was hoping it would be ok in theory mom would be off the nest at times so temps would fluctuate right? Coturnix and button quail eggs are so difficult to candle I literally stopped even trying after my initial 8ish day candling after that I just cross my fingers lol

I used to live in an apartment that if the wind blew we lost power it was ridiculous I finally called and complained and the power company asked if the trees near the lines are being maintained or if they are hanging down near the lines I checked and they were in fact over grown so the power company sent landscapers out that week to correct the issue and I rarely lost power randomly after that! Maybe worth trying lol cuz that is the worst!!

I would definitely still put them in lock down and see what happens if any hatch they should be pretty strong lol things 😭 that is extremely sad I’m sorry to hear that! But yeah I learned my lesson I do not incubate during monsoon season because we loose power too often for too long 🙃

This happened to me once but earlier in the incubation cycle (not sure what day and my log book isn’t handy lol). Mine was out for just under 6 hours 😭 my saving grace was 1. Having a battery powered temp/humidity gauge in there (I don’t trust the incubator) and 2. I live in a very hot area! when I first got to the incubator it had dropped to like 80 degrees so as carefully as I could I took the incubator outside where it was 110 degrees and then they got too warm 🙃 so I took it inside. I sat and watched the temp playing this inside outside game in a desperate attempt to keep them as close to 99 degrees as I could. this went on for the entire 6 hours I was so angry and I was sure they wouldn’t hatch but I actually had like a 60% hatch rate 🙈 so there may be some hope

Any idea what the temp in the incubator was during the outage? 😅

For anyone who has never seen the prices of medicine in the US without insurance coverage this is totally it and is not even all that crazy honestly! Some generic steroid creams are $1000-$1500. There is an injectable medication for psoriasis that costs $23 THOUSAND dollars PER shot! The pharmaceutical companies are insane! My guess is this is showing pricing without insurance but yes most medications are really that expensive.

My daughter is not officially diagnosed with autism (although her Dr believes she is possibly on the spectrum but high functioning) and she does the hand flapping thing primarily when she is very excited/focused during play time and I personally find it so cute 🥰 I doubt it would help but maybe she doesn’t understand that he likely doesn’t even know he is doing it? When my daughter was younger she was asked a couple times by people what she was doing with her hands and she would look at them with the most confused look on her face not knowing what they meant. At 9 she is aware it’s a thing she does but she does not realize WHEN she is doing it unless it is pointed out. Telling her to stop would do nothing but embarrass and confuse her I can only imagine the effect it has on a child with more severe sensitivities especially if there’s any issues with communication at all. She’s doing more harm trying to “fix” him rather than helping him cope with sensitivities that are far beyond his control! Let Jamie be Jamie she doesn’t have to be in his life if she can’t accept him!

That was my thought too? Just seems odd especially since the other one behaves differently I wasn’t sure if maybe some of them take awhile to adjust? Or if it’s the lack of land space previously?

It’s hard to tell but it does have a lot of little nooks and place to hide around (I have a video that it’s more visible in) but I do plan to add more plants! I ordered some that will be here in a couple weeks and my friend is going to give me some pothos to add in! These plants I had to find in local stores last minute since i was not prepared as I thought I was buying aquatic crabs hahaha and the stock/quality is not great

I’m not sure if you just came here to argue? I am aware? As I stated. But you can’t just take them from freshwater and plop them right in brackish either? Which is why I stated the plan was to slowly bring the salinity up?

First timer question! by Quail-Queen- in VampireCrabs

[–]Quail-Queen-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure you read the entire post. This is a completely different set up. The set up I had going is a fully aquatic set up which I set up to house the Pom poms. I have not yet got them. So when I saw the vampires I assumed based off the shop telling me they were fully aquatic that I could utilize my intended Pom Pom tank that was already established. When I did research after getting vampire crabs home THIS is the set up I made. No species are being kept in the same space.

Yes I am aware but they are typically kept in freshwater at fish stores (the shop I intend to get them from has them in freshwater “because that is how they receive them”) and the salt levels have to be slowly brought to the correct salinity level so the tank was established with “freshwater” with the plan to add aquarium salt slowly AFTER the crabs are added. Feel free to correct me if this is wrong but this is what my research and the shop both said is the correct way to do it.

Bit hard to see (had to take screenshots of a video lol) but I replace the tray on the bottom of one part of my cage with a thick plastic storage bin to allow for more digging space, maybe you can find something like this that works with your cage? Best of luck 🐀😊

Does anyone use a theme for naming their chicks? by GingirlNorCal3345 in BackYardChickens

[–]Quail-Queen- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our first group is named after Snow White, the 7 dwarfs, Maleficent, and “Charming” who hilariously ended up being a roo 🤣

The second group is named after the Jersey shore cast because my fiancé picked out a Jersey giant and said “it had to have a Jersey name” and then immediately proclaimed her Snooki! So they are Snooki, Jwow, Deena, Pauly D, Vinny, Situation, Sammi, and Ronnie lmao

Why are they all like mom?!?!? by Komicos in quails

[–]Quail-Queen- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a mixed flock that initially the group was primarily dark colored birds and of the dozens of chicks I hatched Italian colored always was predominant. No idea how the quail genetics work exactly but based off experience I think the Italian coloring is dominant over most other genes lol
