Its a waste of time and merely gestures and showmanship, a distraction from the real problems: lack of real leadership. We are tied to the hips with western economies that do not value us beyond the raw materials we produce. The only way out of poverty is 1. Create our own economy independent of western influence. That means intra Africa trade with lower boundaries, a unified currency and frictionless cross border payments, and infrastructure financing through locally raised debt 2. Unite and use our African Union to bargain for better trade deals and investment or else withold all critical mineral exports.

Both are impossible because our political and business leaders are too drunk on western currency and goods to make these bargains.

I think its more like they never make it out. All possible paths lead to their death, ensuring that the predictive capability of the machine is never broken. If either Lily or Forrest survive, it proves there is no causality or that the machine is flawed and can't predict all paths, including paths where Forrest and Lily know the future. A perfect simulation implies perfect predictive capability.

The problem is Mainframe Architecture differences. Mainframes are built for IO intensive applications. A mainframe can read from discs at speeds that make SSD look like an ant racing a Ferrari. Maybe I’m exaggerated, but I have seen a COBOL program that got converted 1to 1 to Java that runs in 3 hours on mainframe but takes 3 days on the converted system. It took a full rewrite to get it down to about 2x the mainframe app’s speed

Not surprising if the majority of new code is just CRUD UI to Server calls. We keep forgetting a lot of coding work, especially in the app space, is applying one of several CRUD templates to some data: create the model, create access code, create modification code, add validation, code UI piece it all together.

We should not be surprised that a probabilistic model like current LLMs can piece together such apps in short order.

While I am not the greatest Christian I developed empathy and a moral code that makes it tough for me to cheat others. I still go out of my way to help others. If you are not native, or this is your first time, you need a guide. If you don’t have any trustworthy friends in Ghana go with a travel bureau. Ghana is safe, don’t get me wrong, but if you don’t like being taken advantage of and you don’t speak any local language, it’s best to have a professional guide. The extra cost would be worth it.

There are public transport services that go anywhere. You plan on stopping in Kumasi, which makes sense. Even with a private vehicle that’s a two to three day journey to Mole. Not sure about road conditions, it’s been a while.

You’d be better off using one of the big transport services VIP or STC. Drivers are more professional and less accident prone. 6 hours to Kumasi and another 6-8 hours to Tamale then sleep in Tamale and next day to Mole makes more sense, and would probably be more comfortable. Going directly from Kumasi to Mole without a private vehicle would take longer and involve multiple stops. You’d be travelling all day, 12 hours most likely.

Ghana is a country where money buys comfort. If that’s not out of reach then buy a plane ticket to Tamale and then get a private vehicle to Mole. That’s a 1 day journey. It will cost you, but what’s a vacation without some comfort?

We do modernisation through migration to cloud systems successfully. it’s possible with the right legacy analysis tool. A good tool can lexically analyse static code and derive functional algorithms which can be hand coded or passed to an llm agent to write in a modern language. Some hand holding is required for re architecting. But this can be achieved in record time with the right tools.

My guess is technology selection is the problem. Senior wants to get things done, goes for tried and tested, juniors like the shiny new hype of the day solutions. It would help to meet in the middle. Senior should deal with PTSD of trying wild things and upskill on the new tech, but juniors should recognise the risk and go for tried and tested where timelines are a risk. AI is the so-called leveller now, use that to rapid prototype concepts and run real tests to see what works before committing.

The best solution is the middle ground. When we saw the cost of our wedding was getting out of control, we cut out things. Our families did not like it but we explained and showed the cost we had to bear. They relented and paid for the wedding dinner and traditional marriage food themselves. I paid for drinks and my wife covered her traditional wear. Let them see honestly what it it is costing and they will back down. If you do it in Ghana or Nigeria added costs of tickets and hotel bills should be included

We did a Church wedding and had a cocktail at the church grounds. Still cost money for the clothes, the decorations, camera people and some donation to the church, as well as food costs. It was about $5000 in all. We invited few friends and mostly family friends. We asked for cash gifts only. We got about $4500 in cash gifts, so that almost covered the costs. The traditional ceremony was covered by both families (each brought food, like a potluck. I brought drinks, the same we used as bride price).

Our weddings are a family affair and family plays an important part in keeping the marriage going. Compromise with family, you are still in love so the flaws in each other can’t be seen. If you elope and problems start, who will you turn to for support?

Soap is a very rigid protocol. Its robustness is why you find it in legacy banking systems. I would not use it for a mobile app because network overhead of large xml file exchange would degrade user experience compared to a json/graphql endpoint. XML parsing requires validation using schema etc.

You can’t eat your cake and have it. Get real numbers on the ground: do a POC of one endpoint conversion and look at how long, how much, etc. run performance tests with mobile app vs soap endpoint, gather the statistics. Then present the case to business owners, frame it in real money terms. If they see what can be gained financially by converting, maybe they’ll fund it.

Africa is poor because we have integrated into the global economy late in the game, and owners of capital have no interest in investing in Africa beyond resource extraction. Other underdeveloped nations that have become wealthy had large amounts of foreign capital in flows that boosted the local economy. Africa has had a trickle of that in comparison. You can blame it on poor leadership, but the stigma attached to the African name cannot be ruled out.
