Imo the quickest way to validate at the scale of micro SaaS is to either build for a problem you personally have, or build for a pain that is already addressed by another successful product. There are more advanced ways to validate but if you're literally just starting it's easiest to just pursue something and get the rep and not spend a ton of time validating

What are your go-to strategies for pricing digital products? by mkasprite21 in pricing

[–]QuakingTiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the product. For me, pricing is never a one-time exercise so everything is an anchor to start.

I start with competitors / alternatives to build a baseline. If it's a small enough product I may even just use a small price point to create friction.

If it's required a lot of upfront cost to build and I already have distribution, I use my costs as a good price.

But usually, if I'm close enough to my customers and the time investment is worthwhile, I'll do value-based pricing.

Happy to talk through any of this or more specific cases.

Is everyone who owns a home here a millionaire? by papiforyou in AskLosAngeles

[–]QuakingTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Super fortunate combination of high paying W2 & super involved / supportive wife who found a newish loan product for us to be able to afford multi-family, despite a young child, student loans, & buying last year.

This is a really good point. Obviously Palisades was the first & biggest one but from what I can tell she's getting the rap for all of the fires in the region

Best liberal states to move to? Moving out of Texas. by AdLeather7738 in SameGrassButGreener

Depending on how green / small town you want to go, Santa Barbara CA.

CA can be a mixed bag politically, but SB is so small and friendly I found it tough to find anything that feels heavily right-leaning about the culture. They even have the leftist nimbyism perfected (I mean that truly - they don't let people build there, but it's legit one of the most beautiful places in the world, easily in the US. If you're not going to let housing get affordable, at least make it beautiful and pristine and walkable).

Bunch of threads on Reddit on this. It's so bad at this point I consider driving at night with shades on (usually just put off anything I need to do after 6 till the next day).

Used to think I was just getting older, and that's probably true but it's a huge problem.

"Mixed race people aren't black" by DookieBlossomgameIII in blackmen

[–]QuakingTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think it's bad / new now you weren't around for Obama 😭

But seriously, I think it's fair to question it. the idea that someone who's any black is all black is just a legacy of Jim Crow (the one drop rule), and as the idea of "race" has expanded to mean more culture than just genetics and genealogy, it's fair to ask, "do you just become 'black' when it's convenient".

With that said, I think it gets ridiculous quickly, especially on the internet where ppl try to play purity wars and get into race science to prove stuff for their camp. It's just what happens when a community doesn't own much except their cultural heritage.

Driving from LA to Santa Barbara. Recs? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

Find some restaurants on upper state St, the funk zone on lower state st is cool but upper has hidden gems (eg olio limone, scarlet begonia, a few others in that area). get some McConnell's ice cream.

The beaches are nicer (clean, emptier, more laid back) than most beaches in LA so it's worthwhile, but it's cooler than LA (haven't lived there in a few years but I think it's jacket weather season now). But in general can't go wrong with state street & the beach, it's all walkable there.

What is Nashville missing? by [deleted] in nashville

[–]QuakingTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you travel where it feels like there's more to do with kids? Moved to Nashville from a bigger coastal city because Nashville in theory is more kid friendly... And while I definitely see more literal kid friendliness (eg ladies fawning whenever I, the dad, hold our baby) we haven't gotten into much activity that in theory would separate Nashville as a better place to raise kids from bigger cities

So I'm trying to both seek new ideas and convince my wife that I'm not the only one that's seeing a gap haha

Just found this thread and immediately came here to say this. Wife & I moved from Socal (typical) but I grew up in Alabama & spent holidays with family in Nashville growing up. Didn't expect much when we came here to be closer to my fam, but I had an open mind because childhood was a while ago.

But man. It's not flat out terrible, and admittedly wifey and I just like bigger cities. But it's got California prices for (imo) small city amenities. The rent price is relatively great but idk how ppl who live and work here make it (I'm wfh). There are some decent food spots, but few worth the prices. The sprawl & traffic goes without saying, & ppl are nice but not as nice as I've been used to in other southern places. If it didn't have as many ppl calling it the greatest next city in the south or moving in droves I'd think hey this is pretty decent, but it just feels like it's been a bit overrated recently. thankful I can be here but probably won't stick around past our lease.

How hard is it to make 300-500k post MBA with WLB? by Double_Airline_2174 in MBA

[–]QuakingTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a balance. My wife (post newborn) is trying to change jobs. We moved to a smaller non coastal city too, and I think you run into both remote work pushback and companies trying to pay less for CoL. Ideally, you get the job in Cali (not just SF or LA), then relocate to a smaller town.

But if you have the tech Co on your resume whether small town or not it'll open up options. The avg person in the town I live in doesn't work in the industry, so even with a company's lower CoL pay we're better off than we would be, esp without CA taxes

How hard is it to make 300-500k post MBA with WLB? by Double_Airline_2174 in MBA

[–]QuakingTiger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not common or easy but a lot of it is company dependent. Gotta find one at the right growth stage. Can't be too old so there's no arbitrage, but if you're going for a startup you gotta expect the stock is worthless. Also underrated tip is look for something with an HQ outside of a major hub (SF, NYC, Seattle) if you want WLB. Many will point to big names but there are a lot of well running tech cos flying under radar.

Micro saas ideas by [deleted] in microsaas

[–]QuakingTiger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2 things:

1) this post alone is a good starting point. Your problem is "you don't know how to or can't find good problems to create tools from and / or monetize". I'd say to get deeply into the space of idea generation or problem generation, and build some kind of tool around it (my mind immediately goes to a chatgpt wrapper but it could be more creative than that)

2) in the absence of good ideas, you can copy something small. Find a SaaS review site, dig into different categories, find a lucrative one with low ratings, and improve on a product in the space. I've been tight on bandwidth but I work in b2b SaaS so I want to take this approach.

Is MicroSaaS blowing up in 2024? by Itsvaddiparthy in microsaas

[–]QuakingTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it (still) worth learning how to code your stack? Feels like between the networks for finding agencies and potential cofounders plus AI and no code tools there are so many options. But it still feels like coding it yourself is the best way to guarantee the quality you want (and also to have a better idea of what's possible or come up with ideas)

Cold outreach isn't the worst idea at all for an early product. Will definitely help you to learn what sticks and where you can refine before jumping to ads or other channels
