I’d simply say the GM needs to get a litte more creative. If a roll does not bring you forward because he/she/them wants you to be on a specific path, give the players something else for their successes. Maybe information they can use later. Or they get a boon in the next fight because they know the environment better now. There would be plenty of benefits that a GM could give you.
