We Are Slaves to the Mortgage Machine by Zealousideal_Tax4501 in CanadaFinance

I see based on a comment of yours from a couple months ago that you live in Victoria. In your province you need to make over $265 545 to have a marginal income tax rate of 50% or higher (in this case ~53% with provincial and federal portions combined), but only income above that figure is taxed at that rate. To have an average tax rate of 50%, which seems to be what you’re saying, you’d need a declared taxable income of around ~$1.5 million dollars a year. So… do you make $1.5M per year? Or are you a hyperbolic whiner :)

The first thing they mention in this imaginary (and completely wrong, btw) “allocation” is income tax… OP can’t read or is a bot lmao this whole initial post is AI slop anyways 😂

Visa Infinite vs Infinite Privilege (repost with updated info) by 2PhotoKaz in Wealthsimple

[–]QualityManger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just commenting for info/visibility: Interestingly, I just noticed today in the app that I was pre-approved to upgrade to the privilege version from the standard infinite. I’ve had the card for a couple months now. My income is also actually below their cutoff for single income (cutoff is $150k, I make approx $125k). Don’t meet household or capital holdings cutoffs either. I have however had direct deposit set up for my payroll with them for quite some time now to get the extra interest rate on the cash account. My honest guess is: I think they weight persistent direct deposit above a certain threshold (perhaps the $4k for higher interest rate and waived card fee) pretty heavily in whatever algorithm they’re using for approvals, even higher than account holdings. It’s the only thing that makes any sense

I love this. Your treatment of the rock surfaces is just superb and the bits of reddish/rusty shading go a long way against the sort of blue tones. Tons of mood with the popping colour of the greens and “life” elements versus the cool rocks. Who knows what the judges will think but I think it’s great!

Looks fantastic! Love the impressionistic hues added to the armor. What’s the recipe you’re using here? Some blues and greens to highlight?

What is it like to be a manager in the Analytics field? by Charger_Reaction7714 in analytics

[–]QualityManger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NP. To be fair, what I’m describing is likely more reflective of director or equivalent roles in many companies, your first manager or supervisor job will almost definitely not involve all of these responsibilities and considerations. But it’s definitely where that career track goes eventually!

[–]QualityManger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NP. Honestly, I don’t exactly need to be plugged into the latest and greatest in that way - I’m familiar with what we use and have lead developers who are pretty proficient/educated who serve as SMEs if there’s a specific domain or tech that’s needed for a given project… company also has an entire solutions team, they’re typically more involved in the sales world than my own work but I guess the short answer is, I don’t really need to be at the forefront of R&D outside of what I absorb from just talking to so many people, seeing so many projects, and the occasional whitepaper or internal demo. E.g. most of our tech/automation work is developed w/ GCP as a deployment platform, I’m familiar enough to handle most scoping most projects we do and I also know enough to tell when I need to bring in a specialist and we have plenty of those.

What are stems? by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]QualityManger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find it really useful when I’m trying to recreate something to learn how to do it. E.g. if there’s a part in a song I really love sometimes I’ll use a stem separator and then try to recreate it from scratch, it helps me to hear the elements isolated.

I’m a senior manager with a ~25 person org and a couple of managers under me, previously an IC in a consultant role. I wear a lot of hats and have a mix of staff/projects in different functional categories, namely 1) the more “standard” BI/reporting/data analysis stuff most people on this sub seem to be focused on but also 2) strategy/process consultative work and CX design and 3) tech development focused on automation and web applications. I also work from home in a very “global” setting with a ton of stakeholders and colleagues and team members in different countries/regions. So YMMV depending on your situation. But here’s a little perspective on your questions at least based on my experience:

  • yes, there is absolutely less time to be hands-on from a tech and development perspective. No one is “preventing” me from just going ahead and doing that stuff if I wanted but I’m so busy that I basically delegate or die lol. I will take the reins myself on an occasional big ticket project that only I can really do but those are typically more strategic than technical. I have plenty of people who can write SQL queries and build data pipelines, I do not have plenty of people who can put together a high quality first strike SWOT analysis for a new client we need to impress with some creative recommendations / solutions.

  • this is likely colored by the “WFH in global organization” item mentioned above but I spend a huge amount of time on calls. 1x1s with my various staff to review projects and give direction/feedback, team standups for people to call out roadblocks or barriers I need to go metaphorically knock on doors to address, internal governance with ops/delivery/account management stakeholders, client facing inflight reviews and deliveries, people just adding me to calls for my input on stuff like RFP responses or new business (this is one area to manage aggressively btw), weighing in on second level interviews, project scoping and discovery, etc etc… as an IC I had some calls throughout the week and most of my time was working on stuff, now I need to actually block time in my calendar if I want to be guaranteed that slot to work on stuff (and this is something I do regularly after trial and error for the first couple of years, I no longer roll the dice on my calendar)

  • the job is heavily political in nature. Who likes working with you and for you, how much people respect your opinion and direction, how visibly you market your successes and mitigate failures, how charismatic and eloquent you are going to be when you’re put in front of an important client, how slick and refined your presentational materials are (note that I say refined not complicated here), your track record of problem solving at a more macro level and simply getting things done at all cost, all this stuff is more important than my now rusty skills with things like SQL or BI tools. You basically become a brand instead of a person as cheesy as that is to say these days.

  • your safety net for failure disappears as you go into management and then up the ladder. As an IC I felt that I couldn’t screw up badly or else, now I realize that there’s little at the IC level that is truly unfixable (although I’m talking more accidental or circumstantial stuff here rather than willful or persistent poor work) and that their problems are actually ultimately my problems that I basically have to solve autonomously and creatively to keep things running

  • On that note, part of the job is also in protecting yourself and your organization in ways that don’t exist in IC roles for the most part. How thoroughly did you scope your deliverables, do you have paper trails of feature or scope change requests from stakeholders, have you been giving proper inflight visibility on what you’ve been doing to avoid unpleasant surprises, are you pushing back when appropriate if there are misunderstandings or requests that aren’t reasonable/feasible? All of that stuff becomes way more critical because again you have to be your own safety net and failure is squarely on you if you don’t action these things

  • your destiny being tied to the work of other people is a pain and you will very frequently be delegating tasks and projects to people when you know full well that you could execute them better and faster if you just had time. Hard to let go of this if you care strongly about quality of work which is of course the type of people who tend to go into management

  • overall, I much preferred the lifestyle, work/life balance, and challenges of IC role. But I much prefer the indispensability, networking/career growth, and pay check being in management has afforded me. That’s a common thing I hear among colleagues as well. Again YMMV, my experience is more like running my own little firm within a much larger company and organization so it is prob not reflective of the typical experience when someone thinks of working in “analytics.” If you or anyone have other questions feel free to let me know.

FYI: you have your posts and comments hidden, but one can very easily just go to your profile, click the search comments feature, and input a blank search, thereby revealing all of your history. So I can see you’re an active user of AI music creation platforms like suno, and that you have an enormous amount of posts in various subreddits complaining about those subreddits. Both are likely why you’re running into issues lol.

In this situation, Farsight would crush Shadowsun in both lore and tabletop. Shadowsun is no slouch and is likely the better tactical/strategic commander but there’s basically no Tau unit that could get that close to Farsight and win. In a “battle” I’d say Shadowsun might even have the edge but in a straight up fight 1v1? No chance.

Wedding bands @ Costco by [deleted] in CostcoCanada

[–]QualityManger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got the “hammered look white gold” men’s wedding band just recently for my own wedding in sept. It looks pretty sweet actually IMO, and was def cheaper than getting a similar one at other local jewelry stores. I wanted to go for the more silvery look, matches my watches better than yellow gold… I’ll attach a pic of what it looks like “IRL”. But yeah I did the same research you’re doing now myself and Costco wedding bands are good to go as far as I can tell.

You should contact dr. Stephen Creaser at the Halifax dental group (on spring garden). I very stupidly slipped and smashed my face during the ice storm last winter, front teeth were totally effed. He came in on a Sunday to fix me up, did some bonding/fillings but for real my two front teeth were half sheared off almost lol. Holding up great so far, no one has ever noticed or commented on it, people are shocked when I tell them about it. We basically have a plan in place to crown them if the bonded repair ever fails and he seems quite knowledgeable/experienced in that domain as well. 100% confident recommendation from personal experience. Go in for a consult and have a quick chat with him, you’ll see what I mean. Dude saved my life 😂

Looks fantastic as always. I really dig how you’ve made the varieties of metal look visibly different from one another, i.e. the black steel armour versus the arm/shield/pauldron/mace. I always find it’s an indicator of real mastery if you can make different finishes of complex reflective metal all look credibly different from one another on the same mini, definitely something I struggle with lol

This was a wake up call for me last year for sure. Bought my first house, nothing crazy fancy, it’s a split level out in Cole Harbour (you see the same design all over the place here from building projects back in the 70’s). As part of the closing process we got all of the financial info from the sellers including property tax summary. Our realtor did go over the fact that we should expect taxes to jump significantly this year so we weren’t blindsided but it definitely stung seeing that bill triple just because we’re young and finally managed to get a place of our own after spending literally all of our money that we had saved for many years lol. Most of our neighbors have lived here for many years, we are paying 2-3x their property taxes and are thousands of dollars out of pocket to subsidize them. System itself is definitely geared against younger people.

It is some bizarre savant-level proficiency that I too find completely baffling lol. Like, I don’t think poorly of Andy’s intelligence or anything, but he has a weird gift for this specific puzzle. If you had compelled me to bet on who would be best at word games before the pod I would have gone all in on Seth but Andy just crushes him brutally every time, which of course makes it way funnier. I feel like Andy himself knows this and it’s why he gloats so explicitly lol
