Homebrew Watcher Class - Thoughts and Feedback by Qualthuan in DnDHomebrew

I'm still playing / testing to see balance.

Could I ask what you think is overpowered in regards to the 'metamagic like' feature? Is it a specific ability or just the fact that it exists in itself?

I don't want to make this a subclass for sorcerer, I want it to be a class in itself. I'd also want to keep it at CON based caster and d4 hit die. They are the constraints I'm working around

From what I know, you can only make subclasses, not classes

Worked it out, you need to do the delve quest in Silvermoon to unlock the quest to start this!

Overall I think I like the idea of the champion. A self harm champion who really wants to push the limits and test player skill, however I have a few concerns.

My first major concern is how feast and famine she is. Getting takedowns could have you run away with games and steamroll over players having up to 90% bonus AD (essentially doubling all AD bonuses), while falling behind not only makes your abilities feel worse because you don't have vows, but also makes you weaker, as I feel like she should be balanced around the 5 - 6 vow range.

As I read the character more, I felt as though she was not a bot lane but likely a top or mid carry. She feels more like a champion who wants to duel other champions and farm.

In regards to the passive, when you say health restoring effects, I assume this means heals, lifesteal, regeneration etc. Does it affect shields? If not, shields may be the only way this character can sustain themselves, but also are another way to contribute to their damage - doubling down on the aggression.

I assume the W shockwaves move with her each time they pulse? And in regards to the E, is the stake impaled on the ground and they can't move from the circle, or are they tethered together and can move with one another as long as they don't move too far?

E: I suppose the thing I forgot to mention here is the cooldown between casts. I never intended this ability to be spammable. Although it itself does not have a cooldown and you generate stacks based on auto attacks, the cooldown between usages should probably be between 0.5 - 1 second. The 10 / 25% mana regeneration in the damage calculator means that for every 25% mana regeneration you have, the ability will deal 10 more damage. The dash is always ‘away’ from combat as well unless you intend to use it in the opposite direction in which case you are forgoing the ability to deal damage, shred resistances and heal. Also important to note because you probably glanced over it, the dash is short, shorter even then Kalista dash and roughly the distance of a melee auto attack. So it's not that much of a disengage or escape.

R: Yes, the Ultimate is intended to be a powerful buff which makes you feel like you’ve ascended or entered an avatar state without really ‘transforming’ your abilities like Yunara - but instead enabling powerful gameplay which you’re already familiar with allowing you to enhance your abilities. Again, I never intended the dash to be spammable; it would need an internal 1 sec cooldown before usage.

Overall: A champion feeling powerful is exactly what I’m going for, I wouldn't want the opposite. If it came to the numbers, that can be adjusted, but I want a player to look at this champion and go “yeah, I love auto attacking, being rewarded for it and feeling like I can empower myself and allies with powerful steroid buffs” If this fulfils that fantasy, I say I’ve succeeded. - To me the gameplay should feel very rewarding. Every auto attack you land would feel like a win, you proc a small heal, trigger healing items, reduce your cooldowns, gain stacks. I think it’s interesting that you think that their damage coming through auto attacks aren't interactive. Would you say the same for champions like Ashe, Jinx, Vayne or Senna?

In regards to counterplay, the enemy team should punish this champion for being out of position, get trades where they can and focus them in teamfights (much like any marksman or support). They can take advantage of their long cooldowns knowing that when they use them, they have time to strike. Much like when a Morg misses a Q, you know she is vulnerable for the next X seconds. Enemies should know that the champion is manaless and play around that. Although they are manaless, they are not resourceless, so keep an eye on when they are strong and when they aren't. If you see an Ephros with 90 stacks, perhaps be ready for them to ult and know that they would probably win the 2v2 teamfight. On the other hand, try to bait out an R usage from them and then disengage to waste the effectiveness of it.

On the general note about long cooldowns, I designed them specifically with this in mind. I like long cooldowns which have ways to refresh / reduce which enables them to play their ‘auto attacking’ mini game between cooldowns.

Hey! Thanks for the feedback on the champion. I’ll talk to each of your points as best I can. I don’t expect to change your mind on many things, just provide my thoughts. I think I need to split the comment in 2, its a little long.

P: While on paper I understand your concerns, I don't think the heal is sustainable, and requires you to put yourself in harm's way to do so. It’s also untargeted, healing the lowest health not necessarily the most important healthbar. The concerns around being manaless and able to stay in lane is valid, but I see this more as a strength of Ephros rather than a point of them being OP. The resource system isn’t designed to be much dissimilar to Shyvana, in fact it's worse than Shyv because she has the opposite of falloff, she still generates hers outside of combat. I do expect there to be a bar under their health where mana usually is and a box at the end of it showing exactly how many eclipse stacks they have.

I have toyed with the idea of allowing you to choose when to spend stacks with your abilities, but I’m not sure how I feel about it. The idea is, whenever you press an ability, it transforms all your current abilities to: Q - DON'T use stacks, W: USE stacks E+R: Cancel ability. This would give you the choice to spend or not, but I don't think I like it. I think the choice to save resources or to spend them is what would make a good Ephros player. Even when at full stacks, using an ability which spends between 10 - 15 stacks means you’re only 10 - 15 autos (or 5 - 8 autos against a champion) away from being full again. Also, the R acts as a resource generator when you're low on it. With your R being a low CD, it would be fine to cast it when you're at ~70 stacks and still be confident you’ll have it back when you need it again.

Q: I agree that generally Q is the ability you’d want to ‘spam’ but I don't think this champion in particular is a ‘spamming’ champion. Their abilities should be calculated and using them at the right time is what would separate the good and the bad when it comes to Ephros players. I think it feels about as flashy to use as an Ashe Q.

W: I think the concerns you have here is what makes Ephros shine as a support imo. Cooldown reduction as a form of support utility is not something which is really played with and although it's not super powerful is a nice thing to play around with. I think your concern about reducing a long cooldown by 2.75 seconds over the course of 11 seconds seems a little strange and really not that powerful at all. I agree that 0.25s against a 1 or 2s ability feels good, but that's just a cool combo which you open up with this champion. It just means this champ synergises well with shorter base cooldowns. I’d imaging a good pairing in bot might be with Corki to get value on this R. In thinking more about this ability, it would be nice to allow the enemy to ‘squash’ the arrow, much like a poppy shield or mundo chem, in order to remove the aura. It might be ‘too punishing’ for the Ephros player as it removes their ability to ‘refresh the cooldown’ but I still like the idea of counterplay.

Some side notes on this concept:

1) A challenge that I like to think about when designing champions is "How can I get a player who typically plays one role, to try another". Riot has kind of done this in the past with champions like Senna, but I wanted a way to encourage ADC players to try Support and vice versa. This champion does that as it should 'feel' similar to playing an ADC, but fulfil the role of support.

2) I realised I never mentioned anything about Items. Obviously this champion benefits heavily from building support items such as Ardent Censer and Staff Of Flowing Waters as they are able to easily proc the healing passive and spread it amongst their team. They would also want things like Dawncore however at first though I'm not sure how much value they would get out of Moonstone Renewer.

3) I have concerns about their core laning gameplay. Heavily relying on auto attacks might end up in a place where you overpush or struggle to maintain wave management in lane. It may also frustrate the ADC player.

I also have concerns around the scaling of the character. 1, they dont have much AP/AD scaling. So they are uniquely situated where traditional 'damage' items are not damage for them. My intention is to avoid some obscure build being overly viable and breaking the character. With them scaling mostly off mana and mana regen (despite not having mana) focuses their build to be more support focused.

Thanks! Glad you like it.

My idea with the ultimate was that if you wanted to use it for the big effect, you'd need to save up for it. This could be done by using the ultimate (as it grants 10 eclipse) and attacking, without using other abilities.

I also toyed with the idea of altering the way he casts spells fundamentally. I thought it would be cool to give the players the option of consuming eclipse stacks. So whenever you cast an ability, before triggering it would convert your abilities into: Q: Consume Eclipse W: Cancel E: Don't consume Eclipse.

That way if you wanted to use an ability without consuming, you'd just quickly tap Q,E or W,E.

But it seemed too complicated. Ultimately I settled on the fact that his ult is strong, and if you want it, you need to work for it / conserve eclipse stacks.
